Omega1234 reacted to Walter Biles in Meridea by Walter Biles - RADIO - 34" CAD of boat at USN Severn River Repair Station c. 1969
A brief update to my life for my friends here.
I check in from time to time.
Family events of the holiday caused total chaos to my build setup. I haven't gotten it straightened out yet.
I still have 4 or so planks left on each side to finish the planking. Since Linda's health has stabilized last August, I have been taking time for my health getting reviewed Since September. .
I have been getting my diabetes under control, and I just went through nasal surgery in Feb. Oh! how nice to be able to breathe through my nose again. That is a lot better.
My time has been overloaded lately, trying to get my health back in hand. Although I have thought about working on something, When I find the pile of disorganized stuff in my workroom, it gets put off. It just seems too much to think about to have to reorganize everything, and try to do anything. Maybe one day...

Thanks for the "likes" and the comments.
I quite agree George. The big carving will finish it off, although I'm still thinking about the other things that are not clear on the drawings. This was just a simple 8-pd frigate. I'm either going to do an acanthus leaf "thingie" on the lower part of the taffrail or maybe a vine type of thing. Leaving it plain has a certain appeal also...
Thanks Mobbsie. I think she has a nice bum also.
Thanks Carl. I wasn't too sure how it was going to come out. If not for some some advice in the background on some issues it probably would have not been a pretty sight.
I've not worked with any other maple at this point, Sam. It seems to work about the same as boxwood, maybe pear. It's hard but does take a bend with a little persuasion. It seems to take an edge well and it's almost as white (and a lot cheaper) than holly.
I do? I think the ship's looks better than mine.

Omega1234 reacted to pete48 in Buzzards Bay 14 by pete48 - FINISHED - 3/4" = 1' scale - SMALL - L.F. Herreshoff design
Today, After another coat of Varnish was applied to the Spars ( Mast and Boom ) I turned my attention to installing the Cockpit coamings. I started by finalizing the fit. I then made the brace that fits between the Coamings on the forward bulkhead. Next, I made the forward Coaming block, I ( once satisfied with the fit ) I installed the coamings brace and block. I then stained the block and brace cherry red. Next will be to varnish the Cockpit Coamings. Here are the results

Omega1234 reacted to Leo-zd in Lady Nelson by Leo-zd - 1:119 - SMALL
The bell is reduced, painted and put on its place, I also put the piece of rope underside.
I decided to made a stove, in fact just a chimney tube because fortunately nothing can bee seen inside.
I used styrene tube , external diameter 2,4mm and piece of styrene strip for the base.
As this is armed cutter, the cannon without ammunition are useless so i decided to put the cannon balls.
Fist options were the balls in cartigge for hunting rifle but the smallest are 1,5mm and that is so big.
I chosen the steel balls from ball-bearing, the smallest one is 1 mm diameter, approximately the dimension I needed. It was a bit laborious to made the wooden support (1*2 mm) and as could see it isn't perfect but it is so small that I think it will be OK.
The problem is the brightness and color of balls, but wasn't possible to color so small and glanced surfaces.
Maybe the mat transparent coat will got better appearance.
At last one photo with the laptop monitor just to indicate the real dimension and the fact that in reality all is much smaller than on the screen( especially errors and imprecision)

Omega1234 reacted to Chasseur in Preussen by Chasseur - BOTTLE - barque
I had a chance to get into the Man Cave and work on the forecastle area where there are 5 portholes. In behind this area there are crew quarters on the original ship. This piece will be glued onto the upper hull piece after all of the detail work is completed. On top of this piece goes some decking, hand railing, anchors, bollards etc.
I had to make a special little tool to hold the small pieces of brass tubing to file up and install. It worked well and I achieved a fairly accurate scale look.
First picture shows a template loosely glued on so I could prick punch the locations on where to drill. Pretty fussy work at this scale and caffeine intake has to be watched during this process.
Second picture shows ten pieces cut from the tubing with my handy dandy tubing cutter!
Third and fourth pictures show my little tool I made and a piece of brass tubing being filed and ready to install.
Fifth and sixth pictures show the port holes installed and finished with one coat of flat black for starters.
The #11 scalpel blade shows the scale dimension I’m working at … Jeff

Omega1234 reacted to Leo-zd in Lady Nelson by Leo-zd - 1:119 - SMALL
The problem with the bell was that (the one on the photo) was too big
So after painting, returned to dremell and sandpaper and reduced it on a half of size , now is OK (a bit too big so, but it could pass)
