    New scroll work technique.....

I find myself ever looking for unique scroll work that will work with this model.  Many of what I find just does not fit the scale.  By pure accident, while casting more of the many little seahorse and dolphin figures, I noticed that the liquid plastic could be poured onto glass in very thin lines and creating very interesting random patterns.
Although some of the patterns could be cut out and used, the scale was still too large for the places I want to use them.

Then I found to be the perfect solution.....
While putting up Christmas decorations with the admiral, I came across a tree ornament that really caught my eye.
The second pic below shows the unique Christmas bow I discovered with very fine string patterns.
On close examination, I found an unlimited source of fine random patterns that can be selectively cut out and applied to the SOS.

    Secondly....
Here's a deco wine bottle with a metal casting that caught my eye.  After removing the two-piece casting, I created a mold from the center piece to produce the beautiful sculpting you see.  I'm sure this will fit somewhere into the stern ornamentation, when I get to that point.

The larger casting also has several great patterns I will play around with.

    Fun stuff huh?

    Progress Update....

So let's see how has all the new work is coming together aboard ship....

Compared to the port side, I'm pretty pleased with the subtle improvements incorporated into the starboard ornamentation.
Note the fine scroll art from the Christmas bow.... makes a very nice enhancement huh?

    Here's how she looks now....

    Note:
I am going to take a break from the carvings and castings for a while in order to begin installing some of the twenty eight deck cannons that will require full rigging detail.... breaking that formidable task into several sessions, as well as the treenailing of the bamboo hull planks.

I have been jumping around on my project getting little things done. The last couple of days it has been some metal work . Made and installed  a stem strap with a shackle at the top, and both port and starboard mast stay straps. Had to pierce the caprail to do that and was worried I would mess something up.
I make my straps from mild steel wire that I run though a bead roller to flatten it out. I use copper wire and brass wire the same way. Depending on how many times you past it though you can get an assortment of thickness and width.
For pinning the straps I use some railroad spikes I got at a hobby store once. They are small dia. nails with a off set flat head. I file the heads to more or less a round shape and cut to length before starting them in a pilot hole.

And I got the doors on the pilot house

    Christian,
As with all things.. Admiralty orders.  "All ships are to be finished.  Not left looking like they need more work."  And it looks like this one will be getting sails as she's been pushing on that.  So.........  orders is orders.

I've got a pile of different grades of Scotch-Brite that I forgot I had.  Bought them for a different project.   Hmm...  we'll see.  Once I get the other side done...   It's actually looking less glossy today so maybe it wasn't fully cured when I took the pictures.

Truly remarkable job Mark, especially considering it's a single planking job! Wow! Let us know what you end up buffing it with please.

Beautiful stuff mark!  That's really, really nice looking work.  Something to envy for sure for those of us who struggle mightily with hull planking.

And of course - particularly given my recent post regarding furling or unfurling the Santa Maria's main sail - I'm predisposed toward agreeing with the Admiral.  :-)

Defy the admiral?  Whoa, that's bold!   If it was my hull I would probably not use steel wool because of the fine metal particulate it leaves behind, but rather go for the 3M Scotch-Brite hand pads.  The maroon colored  #7447 is a silicon carbide general purpose pad that has the grit equivalence of 360-400.  This is the steel wool equivalent to #00-#000.  If you can find it  you can follow that up with the light gray colored #7448 ultra fine pad with a grit of 800-1000.  It also is a silicon carbide abrassive, the equivalance to #0000 steel wool.

late to the party Mark............congratz on such a wonderful job!   the hull looks great!   the wood may have been more porous in those areas......I wouldn't sweat over it.........unless you inspected all of the wood,  it would be hard to get a uniform color.   now you need to get the other side looking the same,  then you can raise that glass.   I'll be raising one for ya!       sweet look'in finish!

    Hi Mark,

Lovely planking mate and the colour variation looks great.

With regard to the use of steel wool, I'm with Bob on this, you could also put a good wax finish on, the hull colours would really stand out.

If you do go with the steel wool mate, wear a crash hat, (protection from the frying pan).

    Be Good
