Omega1234 reacted to GLakie in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by SawdustDave - FINISHED - 1:48th scale
The castings turned out nice Dave. A method I think I'll but in the old "memory-banks" for future reference.

Mike What a great job on the deck work. The soft curves attribute to your skill and craftsmanship.

Hi Keith!
Bob's AVS is not technically out of production, but he won't manufacture a kit unless he has a lot of 8 orders and business has been slow. He doesn't really advertise. If you are interested, I believe he has one AVS in stock right now. As to this Kit: It's quite a bit different from the MS AVS. The kit differs from Bob's previous kits in that the frames are beveled before installation, making the fairing of the hull, both inside and out, muck easier. The 3D parts are quite excellent. The detail is amazing. You'll have a hard time looking at typical MS, Amati, Corel Britannia metal castings and then using them. Photo below of the 3-D printed parts.
PS: If you're interested in selling "Halifax", I'll take it off your hands!

I did a quick Google search for "1/144 scale figures" and got a bunch of hits. Preiser makes figures that scale both painted and unpainted. They are available from a number of hobby sites in Europe, mostly England, but I found one in Germany. Prices seem to be around 10 Euros for 18 unpainted figures or 6 painted ones. I know that I paid a good deal more for them here in the USA
Hope that helps
I'll also post this on your KWdG log to be sure you get it.

Molding and Casting cannons....
I took a few quick shots of the process for those who might not be familiar with molding and casting.
With over a dozen cannons needed, the options are.... Order manufactured cannons, turn each one individually, or use a master to create a mold and produce an unlimited number of identical units with castings.
Personally, I enjoy the molding and casting process.
For molding, I use "Smooth-On" urethane mold compound (2 parts).... cures in about 16 hours.
For casting, I use Alumilite liquid casting plastic (2 parts).... cures in about 20 minutes
The top left mold was created three years ago using the turned cannon seen in the pic.
The top right mold was poured at about noon yesterday and removed early this morning. I used the brass cannons purchased for my SOS build to create a DOUBLE mold.
The castings turned out great.
In this next set of pics....
Top left, the cannon castings are painted black.
Top right, I'm using a mold created years ago to produce the truck sides.
Bottom left, the trucks are assembled and pre-rigged. Also note the comparison of the 4-wheeled truck that will be used for the 10 gun ports aft of the windless.
Bottom right, is the smaller cannon installed in that first gun port position.
Note the much improved footprint in that very confined space.

Thanks all.
This hits the definition of what is the 'right' way. In my sense, that could be different from person to person. Brilliant? I don't know about that, some would probably say a lost opportunity. However, the old saying "I am the captain" rules all. I don't think the over all effect would have been any better. Again, lots of details to accomplish like softening the hard edges as well as battens and such.
I think I have become more comfortable in this hobby, particularly after finishing the full Druid. With the Druid-X I am having a lot of fun and not 'hanging on' too tight. Should I say I am even considering ordering the blocks for the rigging? The understanding of the rigging was the big mountain for me.

Omega1234 reacted to Piet in Surabaya by Piet - 1/80 - Mid 17th-Century VOC ship
I asked Gwen to scrutinize the railings after I stained the corner posts and put some poly on them. She only found some fault with one of the middle stanchions not having the same width as the rest and the corner post is a little out of plumb. She measured a few items and found that it was acceptable to her and not worth the effort to rip them off the deck and remake them.
So then, for now I'll leave them alone and continue with the cannon tackle gear. That'll keep me occupied for some time putting the straps on the pulley blocks with their hardware hardware. 64 pulley blocks!
There are plenty other things to do to break the monotony.
This is what it looks like as of this afternoon.
The right arrow is pointing to the corner post that's not quite plumb to the deck. I'll rework that one. The left arrow is pointing to a stanchion that's also not quite plumb but that one is not cemented to the deck - yet. Gwen said it was also thinner then the rest. This might also be an optical illusion due to the light and shadow playing tricks. As far as i am concerned I leave that one alone but cement it to the deck. I little heavy CA works wonders,
Cheers,

Thanks for your patience. my last posting was a little rushed as I had to nip into town with Judy before the stores closed.
By bringing the boat into the house it will stay in a more consistent temperature because the house heating is controlled by thermostats and the workshop is up and down in the winter months because i use a wood-stove out there.
My thoughts are to add a light to the lower portion of the cut down cabin. I think a classic angled light that is similar to the one in this picture
Also I am going to work the sides of the cabin in Mahogany with a couple of opening portholes.

Good to see you're continuing with your excellent build. Have you considered having it radio controlled yet?
