VERY INTERESTING BIT OF RESEARCH....
"The hull of the ship began to be altered between 1847 and 1858, with the upper bulwarks being raised ~20”
Is this a coincidence that it is also the same time in history that the British began issuing muskets with rifled bores to their troops?
I would speculate the additional 20" inches might have been added to protect the crews from snipers.
What think?

Thanks Greg... Knock on wood - I wouldn't expect any more of these types of issues.
However, I'm quite sure I'll manage to create plenty of unrelated issues on my own.... and will have to dig my way out of each as they come up. It's just the wacky way I sometimes tend to go about ship building.

Omega1234 reacted to captainbob in SS Mariefred by captainbob - 1:96
Mike there is a picture of Mariefred I need. What is over the windows? There is an eyebrow, and something under it. All the pictures I have are taken from too far away, and the drawings just show it as a squiggle. If you could get a close-up picture I would certainly appreciate it. I will not need the picture for a month or more, so there's no hurry.
Thanks

Hi Denis
Brilliant work on the net. Now all the effort that you've put into the trawl rig, buoys, winches, etc, is all starting to make sense. I can just picture Suborn chugging the seas trawling those waters.
Speaking of trawling, if you could just send her over here...there're a few recalcitrant goldfish in our pond!

Hi Denis
Finally got time to catch up! Man she's looking great. The paints certainly threw up some challenges, but, you've overcome them admirably.
Lovely stuff!

Spar Deck Bulwarks....
Still dealing with issues that arise as a result of my initial launching of this build with plan sheets designed for a completely different configuration.
In this case, it is the height and location of the bulkhead extensions above the Spar deck.
Since my bulwarks have been created off ship as a long continuous module, I found it necessary to cut off all of the original bulkhead extension's and replace them with these custom fit pieces.
These new pieces have been carefully milled to match the exact thickness of the black gun port framing seen here.... also, the location of each is uniformly mid-way between each gun port.
I can now continue with the planking of the hull all the way up to the rail caps.

Mark,
Getting caught up here. As you and others have taught me re-works are a way of life here, you will be somuch more satisfied in the end. Now, if only I could figure out a re-work button for life, id be a milionair and retired instead of just tired!!! LOL!!
(im)patiently waiting for more.

Omega1234 reacted to Mahuna in Kathryn by Mahuna - FINISHED - 1:32 - Skipjack Based on HAER Drawings
Thanks Ron. Delicate is the key word - Kathryn is pretty fragile at this point, and will be until I can get some planking on.

Omega1234 reacted to Mahuna in Kathryn by Mahuna - FINISHED - 1:32 - Skipjack Based on HAER Drawings
Thanks Patrick. Yes, Kathryn is starting to shape up and pretty soon I'll need to deal with the bow and stern timbers - these have me a little confused and I'll need to study it some more. Great fun!

Hi Frank
Lovely framing. This is where the fruits of your labour really starts to take shape.

thanks for the thumbs up, and thanks for the likes as well I do have to say that the lacquer coat dried rather fast, in both applications. for those who use Testor's or Model Master, the metallic paints tend to be soft, and prone to dings and scratches. finger prints and dulling is another problem......I'm hope'in that these problems are alleviated. thanks again for look'in in on my little build
I'll try to make some more progress, but it might be hard to do....gotta run some errands and prepare to go back to work.......UGH!

That copper looks much better, and a little easier than using copper plates. I agree the rub wale will look real good painted white. Nice work

finally........done with that last bit! what a pain it was. the main goal here was to raise the waterline.......and I did so. as mentioned....the Billing's paint was a bust, as well as using the airbrush to do it. here is the Testor's paint. the difference is easy to see.
I think that scrolling up will show you the Billing's copper paint pictures.........crap! it don't no matter....here is a picture of the Billing's copper bottom.
big difference! from here, it got a coat of the flat lacquer.
it needed more time to dry........it's a lot better than it was, I think.
As an added bonus, I went through my bag of decals and got some white strips. they are actually the white decal paper, cut from other colored strips I had made. I cut them down even thinner, since they didn't need to be so wide.
I will most likely need to paint the rub rail white. the waterline was such a pain.......I can imagine how bad the rails would be to line them with decal. so.....that's the big whop-t-do today....I devoted some time elsewhere
