Omega1234 reacted to SawdustDave in Sovereign of The Seas by SawdustDave - FINISHED
OK gang..... Sometimes you have to take a problem to the Master - Right?
So here's what Chuck tells us about that heavy tackle......
The lower block was belayed with a hook onto a heavy bit below deck.
"It was to raise and lower the yard on the foremast. Its for the "tie" which is normally secured to a knight head on deck. In this case below deck."

the stairways are quite easy made due to the pricise brass etch patterns.
One of my most importent work documents is the orientation plan for vents, red indicated (size and tube diameter), and the stairs, green indicated

Hi friend
Well, not cut to bones, but my knees were both hit really hard, so it took a long time for rehab. But riding bikes is what I`m addicted to, beneath model making.
Hi Mark
all of these engines I`ve seen are scratchbuilt, I will have to do my own one, in correct size to the original one. The housings will be 3D printed as I will have my printer next spring. I will construct the engine on the PC with 3D-Cad, transfer the files to .stl format and print them then. It`s a lot of planing work to do, I`ll keep you informed, of the next and ongoing steps.
Regards
Gerhard

I hope you are well, my friend
There are a few of us at age 50+ in "non grown boys" group who ride motobike direct to surgery :D
I have learned my lesson four years ago, cutting my leg to bone... Do you?

Gerhard,
It's wonderful that you're back. I had to go Google the V8 solenoid engine. One impressive bit of hardware. I take it that these are all basically scratch-built? I noticed that they're producing some of the parts using a 3D printer.

Hi Patrick
Who knows.....................
To be serious, I would like to ride again, but will take some time off from that. Over the wintertime it`s much too cold, maybe next year again. But I must watch out for a not too expensuve bike, maybe a (used) sportster could be the next one.
Back to the Baby and it`s new concept of driving. I want to drive the boat with a small V8 solenoid engine, this motors have the best sound of electric engines, but I must figure out, what torque I can get out of such an engine. So there will be a lot of research to make, beneath my other projects!
Regards and thank you all for welcoming me back again!

Omega1234 reacted to BANYAN in Albertic by michael mott - FINISHED - Scale 1:100 - RESTORATION - Bassett-Lowke Model
Michael, I think having two of those little beauties (third hands) is excessive; to save you the embarrassment I am happy to take the second one off your hands (all puns intended)
Seriously though, they look great. I purchased a GRS third hand (soldering station) but yours, especially with the machine clamps look very usefull for rigging as well as many soldering set-ups.
Would you mind posting a pdf of the mechanical set-up of the arm version (how you make it grip the bar yet remain adjustable etc)? I am not keen on grub or thumb screw option and I really like what you have done here.
cheers
Pat

Michael - you could just stop the restoration and go into 3rd hand production. I'm sure you would find many buyers.

I have started using the new third hand to work on the cable stays, the longer reach is helpful, Of course I could have just made a longer bar for the first one, but why only have one third hand when you can have two.
What can I say?.... I'm a tool Junkie, and it is fun making them.

Omega1234 reacted to SawdustDave in Sovereign of The Seas by SawdustDave - FINISHED
All spars now hanging from their halyards.....
Mixed emotions for me at finally achieving this major milestone.
As much as I am excited to be able to begin with her running rigging, I am admittedly intimidated by the aspect of going forward without a clear set of plans..... specifically, the belaying points.
I am plowing through all of Doris's final pics looking for any clues.
We all know, she will eventually become fully rigged - one way or another.

Omega1234 reacted to SawdustDave in Sovereign of The Seas by SawdustDave - FINISHED
Thanks to my friend, and fellow SOS builder, Bill Short, I am trying to finish up the running rigging for the foremast spars.
I ran into something of a complete mystery to me. Going through R.C. Anderson's "Seventeenth Century Rigging", I cannot find a reference. So, I'm hoping one of you shipwright's might have the answer to my questions below.
The following two pics are from the amazing build log posted by Doris in 2011. Her gallery of photo's have been my primary source of information since discovering early on just how flawed my old plan sheets are. So, here is the mystery.....
The small hole shown in the left pic below.....
Is there a name for it? What is it's function?
I assume the big triple block directly above the hole is hanging from the cross trees and would be used to haul up something very heavy from below deck (that is my second question).

Hi Folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back again after Motorbike charsh and following unexpected kenn surgery and long "not Amy Winehouse style" rehab I`m ready to go on again. Sorry for let you all waiting so long, new things will come soon. While my rehab I`ve searched for a new driving concept for the Bootlegger and other motor driven boats, maybe I`m coming up with a novelty in that case....
More about that soon!

Hi Bob
I`m really well now after all that pain, but thats over. The new system will be an electric one, but different to everything I`ve seen in a boat. A few more research is still to make, then I will be able to show up with what I mean. It will take some more time to realize it, but I`m sure this can work.
Regards

Omega1234 reacted to CharlieZardoz in 19th Century 31-ton Revenue Cutter by CharlieZardoz - Scale 1/64 - building as USRC Active based off Doughty plans and BlueJacket Shipcrafters kit
Thank you for that interesting bit of history Wayne. See I agree the inner bulwarks were probably not green like a military vessel, maybe white which Ive seen in alot of cutter models but Dave has a different opinion and also doesnt feel ochre or yellow was used as it was British but its interesting I respect his thoughts as well. The green on that one image i did could be excessive maybe just a strip or two but it looks like we are narrowing down the options quite nicely. I am curious about that white between the waterline and wale, the Chapelle image suggests this so does Corel's Ranger however maybe it should be all black, the reasoning for color in that section is due to that model of Alabama which was all green but I'd like the coloring broken up a bit.
