    Update Feb 19 2022

As I mentioned previously, I messed up the kit's lower deck planks when weathering and adding caulk simulation to the edges. So I ordered some new planks from Modelers Sawmill. They got delayed in the mail, I think due to some heavy weather conditions.
Anyway, when they finally arrived I proceeded to weathering again by submerging random batches of already cut planks in water with diluted shoe polish liquid in several ratios to achieve staining the planks so they look sort of individual planks.
So the end result was this. Before you say anything, this is NOT the final look of the planking job.

I cannot say I liked this very much... too much contrast. So I sanded the whole surface, and applied tint again.

It ended up being too dark. (Sorry no photo of this)

I did a rub with thinner and a rag, and finally I got this look... I am not 100% satisfied, but considering only a small portion of this deck will be seen after placing the upper main deck, I decided to leave it as is, and use the learning experience when doing the main upper deck.

    Thanks for watching, folks!

    Hello all.
This is my Build log of Artesania Latina's HMS Surprise in 1/48
This kit is big. 1334 mm long.
I started this after bagging my previous Sovereign of the Seas project, which was a real disappointment for me.
So far, I've put more hours in this project in a day, than what I put in the SotS in a week.
    Here is my start.

    Technical data of the kit:

The instructions manual. 117 pages in seven languages, with photos (not drawings) of the actual build, and very detailed:

Example of the plans in 1/1 scale relative to the kit, printed in full color and in heavy gloss paper:

False keel and frames already fitted and glued:

Lower false deck in place. Done after a lot of nailing, gluing and of course, cursing.

False lower deck ready for planking. For this I am going to use this article by a fellow modeler member related to deck planking and different plank patterns

Update that is not an update.
Hello guys. Not sure if I should call this post an update.

These strips were cut to length, stained and put to dry to be used later as first deck planks:

After doing the caulk simulation process, I just didn't like the outcome, so I decided to do it all over again, and ordered some new planks from Joe Volpe at Modelers Sawmill (See Home page.)
Obviously that will take some time to arrive. (BTW kudos to Joe Volpe for an outstanding attention to detail and client needs).
So while waiting for my planks to arrive, I filled the middle gap in the false deck boards:

and proceeded to round the corners of the frames so that the planks will lie flat over them.

So that's it. Sorry to dissapoint. Not much of an update, is it?

It will get better as soon as Joe sends my order

    Best regards.

  4. Thanks!

    Fantastic Ulises!
I'll be following for sure! This one's on my bench waiting on me to finish the Endurance by Occre!

    Thanks, Jeff!

Last night I made the port side davits for the quarterdeck lifeboats. Today, I turned to the cradles for the midship lifeboats, since they are the most challenging problem that remains. The first step was to shape the cradles themselves. These are made of 2x5x18 basswood. There's a bit of inconsistency in the sanding/filing, but I don't think this is very noticeable once the lifeboats are in place.

    .

Next, I attached the cradles to their support beams, which are made from 2x2 basswood. The after support beam runs all the way across the ship, under the catwalks, while the forward support beams attach to the sides of the Ritz. I rounded the ends of the support beams to match my observations from Hurley's photos (this one for example). Then a couple test fits to make sure I hadn't shortened the support beams too much when I was sanding—I was particularly concerned about the after one, so I took photos of that one. (You'll have to look closely in the second photo, which is an overhead shot from the top of the mainmast.)

    .

Locating the postholes proved to be a challenge. I ended up laying strips of painter's tape on both caprails, with pre-measured markings for the davits and the support beam posts. The posts themselves are brass pins with the heads removed; I still need to trim some shorter, but they're all close enough for now. I also inserted brass pins into the ends of the forward support beams, to provide more strength where they attach to the Ritz.

Finally, I took the opportunity to check the strength, fit, and overall impression with the lifeboats in the cradles. The structure is actually stronger than I expected! Even without glue, there's no issue at all with the lifeboats weighing down the cradles/support beams. (I won't glue these into place until the davits are ready to be installed.)

Next steps: Install the ratlines on the main and mizzen upper shrouds; paint the lifeboat cradles; make the midship lifeboat davits.

    Doris,
It was actually one of your models that I first saw on Youtube all lit up that inspired me to want to pursue model ship building. It's wonderful and a privilege to watch you work.

I think shellac has a nice antique feel and look to it. I think I would lightly sand the finish coat and apply a good wax. IMO,oil would tend to attract dust and be difficult to clean on the details of a model.

    Sincere Regards,

Sound point made; Tension separation would represent plank/bulkhead adhesive failure more clearly. I must also concur that draft horse teams, specifically cloned to rule out any deviation in the baseline designed of the testing guidelines. While this is continued to be reviewed by executive committee, I too will continue to remove all charring that remains in question here above.

    Ron,

Your deck furniture looks wonderful. Very crisp lines and details. Obviously a very tight grained wood. Are you using pear or is this something else?
BTW..I defer to your build frequently to keep my mindset were I want it to be. There's nothing more motivating to me than seeing the possibilities, thank you
