Vivian Galad got a reaction from SHIPSCAT in Red Dragon by Vivian Galad - Artesania Latina - 1:60 - modified
Hey, hey, hey. Time for new pictures, some words and advices for the young at heart.
I took a pause from my ship since I was waiting for the Blacken It to arrive. As it arrived, I resumed my work. For using it the Blacken It Trials topic, by E&T was used. I did follow all the steps only replacing the muriatic acid by vinegar. I was about taking lots of pictures from the process, but, that is really unecessary since the Trials´ topic shows how it works so fine it would be a waste of time. But I do took a picture from a mistake I made...
That´s how I put the metal pieces on the solution. I tried to shake the solution from time to time, but my results weren´t that great - lot´s of parts were stained - instead of a flat darkened surface, I got a stripe stained one for most of the metal parts. Even if I liked that way it wasn´t my goal they look so. Next time I´ll dump lesser metal parts on blacken it solution for a consistent result.
Well, then I started on my ship´s hole, as it'll need some attention before rigging. I worked on taking out the planking around it so when I fix all the eletronics it´ll be easy to glue new planks over it. Now I´m waiting for some copper foil I bought to finish that part.
After that I coated a second layer of varnish on the hull and a first one over the rails and castle. That was a called step from the ship´s instructions some pages before, but I decided to postpone it while I was still using sharp tools around.
It was time for the rudder, then. I´m still thinking if I´ll set some brass stripes to it. Some old pictures shows rudders with no iron on them. Seems an obscure subject to build the rudder. So far, I followed the kit´s instructions.
After the rudder I fixed all the metal fittings missing before. Cannons aren´t there yet cause I´ll paint them black - I tried blacken it on them, but didn´t like the results. The following pictures are from the fittings instalation and the ship´s general look so far.
Next steps will be the lighting fix finish and rigging beginnings.

Doris, I´m always happy when u visit my post  . I find it funny when you say you don´t work on wood, since you scratch so many parts of your ships on wood and know, from my heart, that when you get your hands over a fully wooden ship you´ll mesmerize us all the same. You´re some of the best ship modellers I know. Thank you.

Vivian Galad got a reaction from Nikiforos in Red Dragon by Vivian Galad - Artesania Latina - 1:60 - modified
Hi again and well, I coundn´t hold myself that much. 3 days after finishing my caravel I´m beginning a new project and hope you all enjoy it. Took me 3 months and some days to my last ship to be finally complete, and, today I started a new counter ^^ (not that I want to beat it).
So, first thing first, I´ll say my impressions on the kit. I bought it from an e-bay auction. The box is a little bit worn, with some small scratches on the fringes. Since the kit is from the 80´s, there´s that look in it:
Opening we can see a good care with pieces and wood, all arranged in a practical manner. My last experience was a bit disappointing regarding opening the box, cause the fittings and everything else were almost thrown in the box, with no preoccupation about the pieces´ overall look. AL, in other hand, do know how to sell it´s fish.
Unboxing the fittings box I found a beaultifull set of small wooden and metal parts. Loved the distribution and care. Didn´t like the brass fittings for doors and windows, or even the lanterns - decided those will be made by me.
The wood planks with pre-cut parts are easy to cut. It´s not laser cut, since in 1989 it wasn´t that common, lol. There´s a fine selection for woods, all woods. I detached the first parts to take the false keel and mount the structure.
For this build I just designed a holder - Big change for better, for my last ship was builded almost in my lap, or on the kit´s base, which devastated my hull, as I saw sometime after the mistake. So, false keel on holder ready to receive framing.
After cutting and sanding the frames, got numbers to them so I could follow the instructions - and make no mistakes.
So, I took care to align all frames with the false keel, since some of them needed some fixing to go smooth with the keel. After that I glued them and the girders, as follows
I got the impression that it was a little bit crooked and drawn a line to compare, but was just an impression. Began first planking but need to buy a small hammer, so, all paused till I buy one.
Other consideration - after studying the plans I found it easy to give the ship some cabins. With a little modification on the castle I can put some nice furniture inside the ship and, following Doris inspiration, will let the windows and doors show the inside (after scratching my own windows and doors, of course).
Well, that´s it!

Hey, Wolf. Nice improvement on the fittings. Great idea with the masking tape - I´ll possibly addopt it in some step . As for the carriages, think when I get my San Francisco under construction I´ll throw a lot of time at researching them cannons and carriages since I want to make she look a bit older (try to build an older galleon, something like the first ones to be built - still don´t know if it´s possible and that will be part of my research - sure thing my San Francisco won´t be the San Francisco ). Your carriage looks great enough for the late 1500´s.

..... continued.
Thanks Michael. I use a mini gas torch for all my soldering, and silver solder paste. It flows beautifully, but the joins MUST be a zero fit as it won't fill any gaps.
The Middle Links and Lower Links were both made by first cutting all the pieces to length - oddly enough ALL the links finished up the same length of 28mm, even the upper links. According to TFFM the middle lengths should have been of varying lengths to allow for the change of angle, but as they also sweep up slightly as the go aft the difference was so minimal (0.2mm) that it didn't warrant a whole lot of extra work .
To bend the pieces I used a simple two-nail jig. The lower links were then silver soldered and shaped around a 1mm drill bit at their lower ends. The upper ends were finessed with pliers around a wedge shaped piece of brass held in the vice similar to the one shown here :
The three links ready for final fitting :
Once the lower links were soldered and shaped the middle links were fitted between them and the upper links and soldered together. The middle link was then tightened down using the jig shown above :
I use a piece of pumice stone ($4.00 from a supermarket) to hold the pieces for soldering.

Thank you all for dropping in and your likes, it's really encouraging.
Didn't do much today. Just finishing up on one more torpedo, drilled the pilot holes for the railing posts and made a boat hook so I can close the deck launcher doors.
Still looking at the numbers on the con and thinking what I should do. The starboard side is actually not too bad and can be worked with. Let me try and use a new sharp pair of scissors and cut not that close to the black outline and see how that looks. The decal material is so fragile.
Let me do some testing first though.
I made a few pics of my new boat hook, hope yuns like it.
Cheers.

My sincere apologies for not posting sooner - my computer was either very sick or dead these past few weeks - all fixed now .
Thank you for your replies Allan, Druxey, David, Mark, Doris, David, Crackers and Johann, much appreciated.
Of course it would have Allan (and David , but you must have missed my comment regarding that bit - I didn't have any tubing of the right size, and to get some would have meant a 1 hour round trip with no certainty of success in getting any from the "local" hobby shop . I figured correctly that I could file the hinge straps in about the same time .
Deadeyes
Although my computer has been down I haven't been idle. I've turned ALL the Deadeyes and drilled them as well - all 142 of them, in four sizes - 64 off 10" (real size) or 5.3mm, 20 off 8" (4.25mm), 42 off 7" (3.7mm) and 16 off 5" - a tiny 2.65mm, the holes were a lot of fun to get right in these ones .
First, an explanation of why I made my own when there are very good quality ones available from companies like Syren Ship Models and some of the Russian sites. While these are of very nice quality, none of them had them in the sizes I needed. For example Chuck supplies all of his in even millimetre sizes (with good reason) and I thought the differences in some of the sizes I needed would have been too great and noticeable. For the 8" and 7" deadeyes I would have had to go with a 4mm deadeye for both, as you can see from the previous paragraph. The 5" deadeyes would have been either too large or too small.
Besides - I like a challenge .
After turning the diameter of the "huge" 5.3mm deadeyes I used a 1mm Parting Tool to cut the groove and also part it from the stock - the Digital Readout came in very handy to keep them all to exactly the same dimensions. For the 7" and 5" ones I ground an old parting tool down to 0.7mm. I rounded the edges with a needle file :
To drill the three 0.6mm holes for the 10" and 8" ones I used my new Rotary Table in the Mill. The holes are 1/4 of the way in from the outer edge and are spaced evenly at angles of 120 degrees apart. The 7" and 5" deadeyes have 0.45mm holes :
All the deadeyes separated into sizes :
An idea of the small sizes of them. Some 10" and 5" deadeyes on top of a 5 cent piece :

Construction of the main deck staircase from scratch. This is included on the plans but not supplied in the kit. Even though it will not be visible once the upper decks are placed, it was a nice touch and a challenge to build.
Each step is made up of 2 parts and needs to be beveled at 45 degrees. I jig was made from lumber and the steps placed on top of each other. Once the whole thing is completed, it can be lifted off the jig.
I did find some nice stanchions at Model Expo that were pretty close to the correct size, and only had to be cut down a little and beveled on the tops.
I finished the whole thing in red walnut and weathered it to look old. Once the main deck is installed and planked, the staircase hole will be cut and the assembly placed down into the deck. A "C" shaped bannister will have to be constructed to match the staircase and attached to the outside wings so it encloses the opening in the deck on 3 sides.

Vivian Galad got a reaction from Erebus and Terror in THE BLACKEN-IT TRIALS
Well, so far, using blacken it didn´t give me a "black" metal. It got a dark brownish color that I liked - it seems aged metal, I would say. Something I did (maybe wrongly) was to put a lot of metal parts at the same time on the solution. This impatience of mine gave some parts a stained look - though I´ll keep it that way if I want a darker look, I´ll try to dump a few parts at a time.

Vivian Galad reacted to daveat22 in lights or no lights?
Well thanks guys that is brilliant advice and answers all my questions.
Vivian set my mind working so I did my research and busbars or bus wires on each deck, with as many low brightness led's taken off as felt necessary. The tiny led's are very cheap and consume little current and batteries could then be used, although I have only found a flicker unit that works with mains voltage. Tiny lanterns are available that take led's, so they could hang on the decks and in the cabins. All this wiring preparation needs to be included at bulkhead stage before planking, and a brass gromet included in the planking for the feed wire. I am still looking for a wireless switch that will work with batteries, they seem to be more readily available for mains current.
All exciting stuff will get my order in for Agamemnon now, just finishing the display case for Victory, the glass costs as much as the kit!

And finally, what stain did you decide for in the end?

Took several breaks and drank a lot of water. I also dragged a dead tree out of the swale next to our house [that's a sloot for yun Dutchies ], it bothered Gwen a lot being there. Actually it's my neighbor's but she's a nice lady.
After having a light lunch, one slice of California sprouted grain braid and a salad, I was rested enough to mozie on into the HOT garage and do some work. I opened the doors and turned the fan on full blast, not too bad, tolerable - - - for me. Gwen asked - how can you work in this oven - Hmmmm, is the Creator trying to tell me something - - - better get used to the heat, you bum, for that HOT place down belo - - - Actually, I love it when the temps are over 80 F, below that I have to wear a sweater .
Well, I have finally done it - - - the O19 has now officially received her name!
Sooooh - - -I decided to cut the mustard and install the decals Remco made for me. They worked out great except for those for the con. The grey was too far off color that I decided to cut each individual number out and attach them separately on the con. That was a struggle and may not have been worth the effort. I have one more set and could replace the ones I have put on the con and just VERY carefully paint the right grey over over the errant parts.
But let my try first to doctor these up and play with it, perhaps a waste of time but so what, where else do I have to go. I'll use my finest drawing pen with India ink for the out line, it's water proof, and shape the letters, if needed.
I'll do a Nenad and do a test run first with some scrap left-over decal stuff and see how that blends in. I still have my test piece I used to send color pics to Remco for the decals.
I think that the green matches really good and may not even need touching up.
I also ordered a package of 1 mm brass tubes for the railing. That could arrive in Palm Coast hopefully this Friday. If not, then we'll have to wait. I can then work on te flags - - - another fun project to try. I'll use a very old worn out hanky, it's nice and thin. I'll try acrylic paint that I used for my artwork and see how that works out.
I could also pre-drill the railing stanchions holes to 3 mm depth, then I don't have to do them when the tubes arrive. Hmmmm, what else - - - oh yeah, the dingy.
Here are a few pics of my efforts for today.
I couldn't resist taking a shot of the torpedo actually going into the loading tube to the forward torpedo room. This is the last one being loaded and pretty soon we are ready for bear. Watch out all yuns with your big ships with lots of cannons Let's see, Kevin is loading depth charges and Dave is getting a "pinger." Ooooooooh, I scared now - - - not.
This shows the O19 marking and the load numbers on the port bow.
This shows the load numbers on the stern. Yes, I used a measuring device to have the bow and stern numbers come out even.
O19 decal attached to the starboard side of the con. Yes, it needs some dressing or doctoring.
O19 decal attached to the port side of the con. Here too, some doctoring is necessary but I'll do some paint blending tests first over the errant color over some scrap decal pieces. If that works out fine then I'll replace these here.
Cheers,
-
