Thank you all, I'm having a great time so far on the project!

Matt, I agree with the timing of my project.  One of several items that was appealing to me getting back into the hobby after such a long time away was the "maturity" of the project.  That I had a lot of reference material and help, as well as any enhancements that have been made.

Earlier in the week I added the bolts to the keel assembly.  Used a combination of my calipers and a steel ruler to keep the bolt patterns straight.

Then set up my build board on a piece of MDF shelving.

Bulkheads were all dry fit and the only sanding/filing I did was to remove any taper or high spots within the slots.  This included filing down any high spots at the ends of the notches to ensure the bulkheads would fully seat flush.

Gluing up the bulkheads after performing a full dry fit went easy enough.  Most of the laser cut bulkheads went in perfectly square with no further clamping required, but I did check every one.  All bulkheads end nicely at the rabbet line as they are supposed to.  The tolerances on the laser cut parts is impressive.

Added the bow fillers and I think I'm ready to start having fun with the first of what I'm sure will be a few rounds of fairing before moving on to framing the ports.  I see a lot of sawdust in my future this week.

Hello everyone. Its been a while since anyone has posted any Speedwell progress.   I have finished up Chapter 2 and everything seems to be progressing pretty good.  I had to do my fair share of de-construction of the frames a few times but it's all squared up pretty good now.

I do have a question.  My plans show the top plank as 5/32 wide (above) and Chucks and Mikes (below) show it as 7/32.  Not sure which is correct.
Its going to be a while before I have to worry about that but it will make a difference when it comes time to cut the tops of the frames.

Pretty much on hold now until Chapter 3 parts become available again.  I missed the day that they were available on the website & they were gone before I could get one.
Hope everyone is moving along out there...

    Removing the JIGS

Before removing the jig, I decided like others to reinforce the frames by inserting fillers at the sheer. This is probably not needed, but should add some rigidity when fairing inside the hull.  Removing the jigs was straightforward. No issues here. As instructed, I used a long sanding sticks to create a smooth even sheer line. The hull template is useful here to tweak the sheer.

The fairing Cap and Inboard Fairing

I added the fairing cap making sure I do not mix the two middle sections. Then came fairing inboard... This is a long process.  It took me several tens of hours to complete this. I used only sandpapers and sanding bars of various grits. Fairing at the bow is especially tedious because that section is quite concave and hard to reach.

I also added the keelson as you can see.

    Planking Above the Wales

I completed the planking up to the 1/4" strake.  Here the planking template is very useful to shape the planks at the bow. I tried to follow the plan as much as possible trying to match the strake height with respect to the gun/seep ports. I found it important to check the exact width of my 7/32 planks and make adjustments where necessary. Errors are cumulative and it does not take much to deviate from the plan. A few photos follow:

The next step is treenailing. I will report on this in hopefully a not too distant future...

I finished the topsail yard and the lower yard.  That brings an end to the spars.  I still have the last couple of items to work on before I'm done with the dusty woodworking part of the build.  Those being the entryway stanchions, and Chuck's mini-kit for the anchors.

Nice progress Steve. I used the 5/32" template to establish the top of the upper wales (just as you show above). The 7/32" template provided in Chapter 2 instructions is used once you add the 1/16" thick fairing cap. At least that is my understanding.

The sweep port and the gunport base have not been glued in yet so I can take them out to trim them before I glue them in. They were there to help with alignment.
From everything I have seen so far those upper frame joints will be hidden by planking so I decided to not trim those.  Hopefully I'm not wrong....

As always, thanks for the likes.  I continue to make progress on the spars.  I finished the gaff this week.  I figured I'd start with the smaller one before I move onto the boom, which is essentially the same thing but bigger.  This was pretty straight forward, though like the topmast, rounding it by hand is a bit tricky due to its small diameter.  While it's made following the plans, I test fit it to the mast itself, making sure not to remove too much material by accident from the part that butts up against the mast.

Well I am officially moved in to my new place.  Everything is going well but not as quickly as I would like.  Having said this,  the shop is pretty much all set
up.  I have a few things left to do but plan on opening the store for orders on Tuesday morning.

Thanks to all of my customers for your patience.  I can honestly say that I will never move again.  Moving sucks.  But once the dust settles it will have been worth it.

I finished all the frames on the stbd side yesterday, next is the port side and then a couple days of sanding.
Only a few incidents that have been  corrected in the design but overall everything went together well and I’m happy with the results.

off to work for 6 weeks so I’ll be writing instructions and modifying cut files until I return to frame the other side and then install the inner post and all the wing transoms

    Thanks for looking in.

Hi All, I haven’t posted any updates in awhile, I’ve moved, had a job change and the whole ball of wax. In that time I’ve made some major modifications to the original design of Portland which includes frames as seen in the painting. I’ve decided to move forward with building that prototype alongside the current POB version of Portland as I plan to offer both versions of the model, one for those who don’t like sanding tons of char and the other for those who don’t like planking.
The two models are very similar above the main wales but that’s where it ends. Below the main wale the structure is completely different made up of many more parts. I’m currently testing the framing and the support structure that holds it, results are good so far, I plan to move to the forward frames tomorrow where things get a little more tricky with multiple angles involved.

Below you can see the support structure going together along with the test frames.
I’ve blacked out the MDF support structure so it will not be seen once the lower frames are all in place, or at least harder to see. I’m currently building the frames out of Swiss pear with the keel, knee and any planking AYC. The deck structure will be the same where the beams are pear and all planking a lighter AYC.
    more updates to come soon.
    JJ

Thank you guys and I wish you all the best in the new year.

Test fitting of the lantern on the model.
Compromise solution - I didn't drill the badge on the transom.
The square brass rod is just a support
The lantern is only hanged on two auxiliary rods.
Tomorrow I'll probably order an acrylic cover and just make the base and it's done 🙂
