  1. Yeah...no basements in Charleston either due to the water table. I had them in Illinois. I miss it too. Great hobby places.
  2. It looks very good Sjors. Those drill skills show up well. Mick: the cross trees did just what you think.
  3. Or you could add a resistor from radio shack. That would drop some of the load. I do see what you mean about the input leads. I agree that thicker gauge would be better.
  4. Verne I have been thinking about this reflector/concentrator problem as well. I think I will check an auto store for a small reflector lamp housing and test it out. I'll let you know if that works at all. I am dreading making a housing and am really trying to skimp my way out of it. But if push comes to shove I will get out the physics books, calculate a lens solution and house the fiber optics and LED in a focused lens concentrator.
  5. It has been a while...so I thought I would let you know I am still at it... The gun tackle is extremely tedious. I am about half done and they are now averaging completion of about 1 gun per day. But the speed and efficiency is improving so maybe 10 days or so before they are finished. I am not going to add the train tackle since I have no crew to man the guns anyway (and to preserve my sanity) preferring instead to leave them in inspection mode. After the guns are finished then on to the relatively easier task of setting the anchor cable, install the pumps and capstan, attach the camboose to its base, align both with the spar deck receptacles and then seal the deck up...whew...and none will have ever arrived happier to the spar deck.
  6. That pear wood is a beautiful color for the coamings and contrasts nicely with the hatches. Very nice work Wes.
  7. I agree Sjors, the fighting tops look clean and crisp. Well done.
  8. Andy. It looks beautiful. Amazing. I have an entertainment center almost exactly like yours and I will now be able to show my wife how the finished project will look! (Funny, I have a canoe like yours too but mine is painted red on the planks. I bought mine at an auction however).
  9. Kinda' small but it is rated at 1 amp. What is the rating on the LED? I have decided to move up to a unit that cranks out 2 amps. I don't need that much power but the 'wall wart' rated at 1 amp was a little warm after the LED tests. Hmmm...heat equals eventual failure of the unit... Dave
  10. I have never heard of that either Verne. With the meter I always start at a high setting and work down when the voltage is unknown. I have not posted it in the tutorial but there is a formula for calculating a resistor value in the LED circuit. Resistor = Power Supply Voltage - LED Voltage Drop (LED rated voltage) LED Current rating I hope that helps. Sorry I did not get back to the tutorial to give a heads up. My LED and power supply are both rated at 12vdc. No resistor needed with these settings. The good news is the meter probably is warrantied and the LED is not fried.
  11. That is an odd cycling. Verne - definitely check the output voltage for consistency. I am sure you have nailed down the problem since the 9v battery gave you good results.
  12. Verne: do you have a voltmeter around the house? If so, you can check the output pretty easily. If not I believe an auto parts store like Autozone has meters on premises for checking alternators, etc. and they might check that output voltage for you. The intermittent flashing: was it like a 60hz flash or slower? If it was near 60hz that means the "DC" power supply is probably just a diode filter allowing the forward phase current to the output leads and simply canceling or blocking the reverse current - a poor way to convert AC to DC - as rectifier circuits usually CONVERT the reverse phase to a forward phase giving an RMS of average input voltage or the step down voltage via transformers.
  13. I agree. The gilded gold and blue is beautifully painted. Congratulations Henry. It is coming together very nicely.
  14. Henry I simulated the trunion covers with some Vinyl auto pinstripe cut to size. It actually looked pretty good at 1/96 scale but only gives an approximation. Your build is looking very good.
  15. Sjors: 'Rectification'; I think that is greater than a 10 letter word. Are you and Augie conspiring? :)
  16. Looks nice Verne. I am glad you are feeling better. Although it is a little early for the flu the virus in one form or another is around all the time. It only PEAKS in the winter/spring. My progress is slow right now with the gun tackle. Keep up the good work. Dave
  17. John: We had a very pleasant visit with you and Diane. Thank you. I hope the rest of your travel vacation is as planned with no tropical rain outs. Be safe my friend. Dave
  18. From one Smith to another: Henry these look really good. I love those ring bolts.
  19. Yes. A lot of love and determination has been put into these little cannons. I know it won't be seen much...but the lanterns will help that some. I will probably remove the aft cabin doors and reposition them to the full open position since there is a clear view through the captain's cabin to the gun deck from the stern. If nothing else I am learning how to make hooks, coils, rig tackle, and, in general, handle small rigging projects before getting to the spar deck. And I am having fun with the details. If the fun factor leaves then I will move on. This type of modeling is fairly new to me and the skills I am learning here on MSW have raised my ability beyond what I thought I could do. But I know there is a long way to go to be completed on this build. Kim: interesting you mentioned the cross section. When the build is finally complete I thought about doing a small one from the spare hull and decks from the experimental model (the second kit). That is still a very distant thought however.
  20. It has been a learning curve but the first cannons are complete. Now that I have a method the rest should fall in line in due order. The first prototypes...not as tidy as I would like. The canons to their right are a little better... And from the top...
  21. BTW. Thanks to Anja, John, and Henry for the birthday well wishes. 59 today! (but I don't feel a day over 58. )
