Of course up to you, but the one with the spinner is the one I'd do, as that might have been the best S.E.5a that ever flew. You know the story of him tuning the engine to death and completely stupefying the Rumpler pilots by diving on them at like 19k?

Well, other tempting one would be the mid markings set of No.56 Squadron and do it as it appeared on the day that he and Rhys-Davids and the rest took down my namesake.

Does it have the spinner McCudden put on his S.E.5A? He stole it from a LVG C.V or something.

They don't look bad, did you use an awl to make a starter hole? It's nearly impossible to drill a hole in an exact spot with a big handheld cordless drill without using an awl or a nail to make a starter hole at the right spot(s).

The piping and wiring is all done :

This drive chain wasn't east to cut. The chain is only 0.3mm wide and it's also double thickness :

Now it's time to fit the engine into the framework. This will be a real test of my accuracy - there's absolutely NO room for error. Here's the result :

What Mark said, you can expand a hole just by twisting a round file in said hole, and you can make it move one direction or another by pressing more on one side. You should be able to fix any minor spacing issues just by expanding the holes slightly and controlling the direction in which they expand.

This is the S.E.5a engine, the Hispano Suiza 8 cylinder.
Engine is the stock kit pieces with added spark plug wiring from scratch (plastic rod and fine wire).
Engine is painted in Tamiya semi gloss black, dry brushed with Mr. Metal Color iron and aluminum.
The only parts of the engine that will be readily seen once the model is finished are the rocker covers. There's no reason for me to go too wild on engine detail that's going to be hidden.

    Hello all

After the first planking the next job was drill some holes.
Well as I don't have a large drill I had to go and beg the man next door (good job I cooked dinner for him and his wife last night 😀) so he loaned me his cordless DeWalt drill.
When he handed it over I just about dropped it on the concrete footpath, walking back home (well staggering is a better word ) I thought how am I going to drill holes with this thing, but drill holes I did JUST, sorry they are all over the place.

I now have to phone for a Taxi to take it back ♿.

    Jo.

Absolutely and one of my little planes was bought that way and it turned out to have a decent steel iron so it may work well as is. If it doesn't, take a look at the Mujingfang version, that will definitely work well.

And I'm looking forward to this. I enjoyed the Kaiser Wilhelm in particular, must have missed your Xebec when I was away.

I have a version of that, it's called a bullnose plane and is exactly for the purpose you're using it. I used mine on my LN, cleaning up the joints between the bulkhead tops and the deck underlayment. You want to make light cuts with lots of pressure on the rear end of the plane to prevent it from nosediving into the wood, something every bullnose plane likes to do.

The best small planes I've found are the Mujingfang planes, the steel is quite good. Although I like the coolness factor of the little Veritas copies of larger planes, they really aren't very ergonomic.

Long time ago when I was in the games industry, we had a game con in Tampa one year and had a couple events at Kermit Weeks' museum. One was getting a chance to hear firsthand the story of the only guy in WWII to take off on a mission in a P-51 and land in a FW-190, Colonel Bruce Carr, who arrived at the dinner flying a P-51 at close to 300kts right over our heads as we stood out on the tarmac. I think he was 85 at the time.

Anyway, he got shot down by flak and bailed out and decided to surrender to the Luftwaffe, heading toward a German field. But he changed his mind, and just before dawn he stole a fully fueled and prepped 190, figuring out how to start it and eventually to get the gear up. He flew at treetop height back to his field in France, where he crash landed just before they were about to shoot him to pieces with quad .50s. I know the article says 40mm guns, but I remember Col. Carr very clearly describing them pulling the covers off the quad .50cals on M16 halftracks.

It's a really nice facility, airplane geek heaven.

Looks great. Has anyone done Oeffag Albatrosen starting from a D.III? Converting one to a blunt-nosed fuselage with a 300hp Hiero and buried Schwarzlose MGs of a series 253 version would be an interesting challenge.

I'm glad you were working with a little Byrnes saw, learning those lessons yourself on a full-sized table saw could cost you fingers and whole hands. If you have a Woodcraft store local, they give table saw training classes. Or simply have a friend who's worked with saws walk you through the basics, you can also damage blades or the saw if you haven't had intro table saw training.

Carrying on with the mold making....

there is hardly any fine tuning to fairing / shaping the bulkheads, all is straking quite well and the planks will have a moderate bend. Now the bowpost and sternpost as well as the keel will be removably fastened to the mold....

    Nils

there are reinforcement lugs left and right, to where the centerbord will pass through the keel on the hull later on
