  1. This may sound strange, but while doing the simulated caulking of the deck on my Harley almost a Harvey, I started wondering if the eye-liner products (for women) could do the same job as a graphite pen. I have found that both the products are smearing if not being careful, but the eye-liner will do a better covering in one stroke. Will update later with pictures. But this truly works! And considering all the Admirals in our Forum it's time for you to open up the make-up boxes. You have a great tool nearby!
  2. I have done my testing with different brands of paint and found the Vallejo paint outstanding, now I wonder how its' gold would stand out? Testing will tell.
  3. The starboard bulwark installed. Planking the inside and outside is next.
  4. Port Bulwark in place. The card stock came out very nice. Regular wood glue put it in place. Now the starboard side.
  5. The waterways are in place. The material for the bulwarks in the kit is 1.5mm plywood. I didn't like how the shape turned with that. Besides it is really hard to bend and get a nice shape. But I did have 1mm card stock, using the bulwarks as templates I cut out two exact copies. Shaping will be so much easier. Besides the in and outside will be covered with thin walnut veneer. Sorry for the messy table.
  6. Byrnes thickness sander: I have acquired such one, and tried it out for the first time today. Since I don't have a proper workshop I did it outside in the nice weather. Now joining the chorale for the amazing machines of Byrnes. My hat off to Donna and Jim.
  7. Casey, nice progress though. as for the removal of the appendix, I had mine removed back in late 90's. Same day as I came I decided to watch a movie. The movie I got was the Brittish "The Full Monty", bad choice as the movie is hilarious and laughing made the aching worse. Stay away from laughing in the closest future, and coughing, sneezing as well. Hope to see you back on your feet soon, get well.
  8. I would say I am pretty pleased with the trimmed piece. no need for lateral bending anymore.
  9. And more precise accessories as well.....
  10. JVO, unfortunate when it comes to the tolerance you are looking into, the only table saw I would recommend is the Byrnes table saw. Don't have one myself, but one day.
  11. Walnut in its' general material, has a nice smell when sanding while shaping. And it does obey you to certain degree when it come lateral way as well. Have had good experience with the material. Pre-watered and high temp steaming does the job...... to a certain degree. When you reach the limit it will snap directly, even wet.
  12. Hah, found my way around the waterways, and no doesn't involve removing them. The part to the stem is a three-piece glued walnut to be shape accordingly.
  13. The waterways are of walnut .... so ******** (don't even know that word) to bend lateral way.
  14. Waterways being installed, again the material can't be bent in lateral way so I made them in sections. Probably wrong to the time era, but has to work with material provided unless swapped
  15. Decking is completed now some trim around the edges, once that is done light sanding with 340 paper.
  16. Oh, forgot the thing about length of deck planks. Since the kit is 1:50, and guessing a normal "real" plank may run in the length of 6 meters (about 6 yards) I cut the planks to 12cm. The kit plans shows a plank length of 7cm which should be 3.5m (about 3.5 yards) Seemed to make some sense to me.
  17. During the "house call" at Floyd's Shipyard I was able to catch the man in the action...... sort off In the background his lovely dog Willow but also the J-yacht Endeavour. This picture is good to give the idea of the sheer size of the yacht. Floyd in action adding planks to the bulb and first two flush with deck. The bulb planks measure 2x2mm while the regular planks are 1x4mm, that will result with a lot of sanding to get a uniformed side.
  18. During a "house call at the West side of the state I also had time to work on my "Harley" I have come to the stage of "decking" as in the picture the king plank is attached. To simulate the caulking I used a borrowed graphite pen. It's a tedious job doing the simulated caulking but progress is certainly on the way. And yes, I am the one doing the job ....
  19. Floyd, Nice progress, I took a last look at her before I left this morning, and saw additional two wet planks in place. BTW, next time you go out to the model, don't burn the bacon in the skillet.
  20. Matti, fantastiskt jobb! Oerhört snyggt! Amazing jobb, extremely nice! You should apply as curator at the Sjöhistoriska Museumet.
  21. As I am waiting for the last game of the Olympic Ice hockey I have been working of on my Harvey for a while..... and long before, ( updates has been asked for) Planking is complete and all is with 1.5mm walnut first layer..... and only layer. However, I do like the finish even without any finish. There is several more steps before any painting will happen. I tried to use minimal wood filler and where it is filled, a combo of wood-filler and dust from wood has been combined for the matching. Additional sanding is needed but I am ready to for the next step of planking.... yeah! finally!
  22. Floyd, my mistake, and yes the swiss pear sounds very intriguing. Would love to work the material. Boxwood as well.
  23. Chuck and Floyd, based on your conversation, and as an owner of the Longboat, sorry Floyd for putting you in this position, the Swiss pear does sound interesting, but knowing the characteristics of the boxwood, I might go with the original set. There is a reason you, Chuck, decided on the wood for the kit. I am looking forward building this amazing kit of Chuck.
