Yes, careful with the fingers!
More than once got caught on the backstays. A miracle I haven't snapped anything yet!

iPhone fits better than my big hands though, so here are some 'onboard' pics;

Thanks Nenad,

There are several simplifications though.
I have skipped a couple of brace pendant blocks, omitted the upper topsail sheets and most of the running rigging to do with sails.

I may install reef tackles for the lower yards, but have not decided yet.

Cheers!

I'm surprised that those holes weren't predrilled and already there.  but I guess if this is an older kit,  they might not have been.   very nice job you've done there  ;)

Thanks,

In the early 80's, the parts were just printed on different sheets of wood and you had to cut them out yourself (I was using my dad's bandsaw which made my mum a bit nervous).

The deck was on one sheet of wood (1.5mm veneer I think), and if I remember correctly; the deck houses were marked, and the masts as well as the deck plank pattern was also printed, -but no markings for the fife rails..

Anyway, once I had cut out the deck and drilled the mast holes, I scribed the planking with a knife and sanded off the printing.
The deck was then finished with a coat of varnish, a dark wash followed by a second coat of varnish. Not very realistic, but looks nice enough..

The main reason the holes were still not drilled for the fife rails is probably the same as for the rest of the missing rigging around the fore mast.
I had just quick-rigged the foremast (not finishing it) and left the model at my parents house when I was going off to university. It then remained there until about ten years ago when the whole rigging was taken down for ease of transport.

Now for the tacks;

Drilled a hole at the end of the block to attach a rope.

post-18701-0-99020300-1447048790_thumb.jpg

Ready to install, approximately where Campbell's plans have them.

Looking at pictures of the real ship, the tacks, sheets, clewlines and reef tackles are all rigged up together.

Most models omit the reef tackles, Billing's rigging plan does not have tack lines either.
(I may leave out the reef tackles as well, not sure yet)

Cheers!

/Peter

After over 40 years of sitting, covered, on the china cabinet, I decided it was time to finish this project.

Originally,   I followed the Billings plans like a lemming. Then the fountain of knowledge got turned on.

I purchased C. Neppean Longridge's volume 2 relating to masts and rigging. I also purchased the Campbell plans from the museum. Yes there are many discrepancies between Longridge, Campbell and Billiings, so my work is a picking and choosing of the most sensical of the three. This is not a museum piece by any stretch.

Had I known better, I would scrap most of the Billings parts and use Longridge as the primary source. As we all know Billings prints outlines on plywood, so we must cut, sand and file. In retrospect a lot of them look silly. For example the trees.  I also scrapped the Billings caps and made some from annealed brass. I think it just looks better and is closer to the actual ship.

The hardest part of the project to date is assembling the mast sections and trees. I have been using modelling clay to keep alignment while the regular wood glue dries. Once I am satisfied I will give each joint a small does of CA. I don't regularly use CA since it makes me ill. It is related to cyanide and that is enough for me. Having been a chemical weapons specialist in this mans army I think I bring a different perspective.

Enough for now.

Hey Jim, I like your work and thinking about

About CA, several days ago I found somewhere on MSW discusion with conclusion - no CA for rigging. But I do not know nothing about rigging still

Keep good work

To All:

I'm a bit of an old coot picking up on trying to complete a model of the Cuttysark I began in 1974 (Have I waited long enough?).  The hull, deck and cabins were all completed back around '76 when I was on the road a bit.  I've yet to complete the masts and shuddered a bit when I found that little piece of plywood with 13 little cutouts  on it.  Any suggestions on cutting these out?  A fine coping saw maybe.

My biggest problem is that my plans have gone astray except for the rigging.  I have no idea of correct dimensional layout for the cabins.  Anyone have an old copy?  I haven't as yet tried to see if Billings is still around, but am guessing not.  My real problem was likely self induced as I started making wine in 1977 and am sure my interest shifted.  Now if my eyes can hold out and my hands will quit shaking I'm going to finish the Cutty.  Thanks for any help.  Bruce Paulsen, Orinda, Calif.

I'm new to all this. Billings' instructions hardly help. How do I fit blocks to the yards? Simply tie them round or drill & use the eyebolts provided in the accessories? And where does the chain on yards R1, R6 & R12 disappear to?

Hi Bruce, Dave

Sorry for the delay. It's been a while since I logged in.

Billings is still around, instructions are available for download from their site:

https://www.billingboats.com/index.php/modelboats-footer/76/120/boats/the-expert/P-bb564-cutty-sark

Chains for lower yards 1, 6 and 12 should be attached to the mast (looks a bit wrong on the Billings plans)

For the blocks, I have mostly tied them around the yards

Hope this helps?

Peter
