The CONFERENCE

Check out the Conference details on the NRG website.  There are some great speakers, Interesting tours, Technical modeling sessions, and much more.  I think you will recognize many of the speakers from right here on MSW.  I am looking forward to it very much...especially seeing the CSS Hunley

THE HOTEL

The Crowne Plaza Charleston Conference Hotel will be home base for the Conference. We have arranged a great room rate of $109 for singles and $119 for doubles – the low room rates include the morning Breakfast Buffet.  We have arranged for these great room rates to be available for three days before and after the event for those wanting to extend their time in Charleston.

The hotel has free airport shuttle and their shuttle will also take us to and from some of the 30+ restaurants in the immediate area, though the food at the hotel is both good and affordable.

The hotel is adjacent to the large Tangier Outlet Mall where bargains abound and the hotel’s shuttle will be available to and from the Mall.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I went to see the HUNLEY several years ago.  It was still in a tank of water and they were still excavating the interior.  At the time, they had a "Confederate honor guard" posted at a location in the exhibit that talked about the crew.  I thought it was a touristy thing that they were doing...a novelty sort of thing.  I found out that it was an actual honor guard (I'm not sure of how official it was) to 'guard' the remains of the crew that were being kept at that location until they could be formally interred later that year.

Very interesting site. Highly recommended if you are going.  Patriot's Point is also a good location.

Chuck,

Hopefully, if all in is line, I can combine a cycling and ship model vacation in one.  Spent several days two years ago in Charleston cycling.  Is the event open to non-NRG members?

Happy modeling,

That would be awesome.  Yes it is open to non-members but with the discounts for members...you could join today for $38 and still save hundreds on the trip.  There will be a 15% discount on all seminars and tours...etc for members.  That includes for spouses and family members.

I looked at the hotels website and by default they seem to have nothing but double rates for $119.  I will probably have to phone them to get the single rate.

Hi Dave B,

When you go to the hotel website make sure you type NRG in the group code box to get the discount. I booked my room about a week ago on their website and had no problem getting the single room rate.

I would recommend anybody who can attend do so. Charleston is a great town with lots and lots of nautical history. The tour of Patriots Point is well worth an afternoon. I saw the Hunley several years ago, when they first brought her up. Not a lot there to see at the time, but even then I came away impressed with the bravery of the guys who cranked her out to attack the Housatanic. I imagine the tour can only be better now that they have had time to excavate the sub, though it seems like they still haven't uncovered many of the secrets of her crew's final hours.

There is still time to sign up to attend this year's conference but the seating for both tours is filling up fast.  Registration forms are on the NRG web site - www.thenrg.org  We would hate to see some not be able to attend because they waited too long to register but seats are limited.

Still time to sign up for the conference.  The Wednesday tour is filled but room for others at everything else.  The model show looks good this year with 20+ models on exhibit.

Looks like Fort Sumter will be open for you, Chuck. I think you will find it a fascinating experience if you haven't been before. The boat ride out and back is also super. Enjoy

As far as I was concerned the conference was a success.  Really great speakers who were worth the trip.  It was fun to meet old friends and trade ideas and new techniques.  Too bad there was no attendance sheet this year so you knew who all came.

David,

I second that!  I believe the conference was a great success, the topics were very good and the speakers were outstanding!  I look forward to the 2014 conference in St. Louis.  :)

Cheers,

It was a great time for all that attended the Conference.  I really enjoyed the trip to Patriots Point on Wednesday and the tour of Fort Sumter and the Hunley on Friday.  The presentations were excellent and the presenters definitely had a lot of enthusiasm for their topics.  There were also about twenty ship models on display.  The best part was meeting up with old friends and making new ones.  There were also a lot on Model Ship World members in attendance.  Like Tim, I am looking forward to St. Louis in 2014.
