Great job on the tryworks John!  It's amazing how much "stuff" was on the deck of a whaler.  From the hurricane houses on forward, lots and lots of structures.

 

By the way, I don't believe Blacken It works on copper.  However, copper does blacken nicely with liver of sulphur.

That link was a really good explanation about the LOS. I wondered why the blacken-it continued to oxidize the metal after rinsing...in fact I had learned to very carefully rinse it off the treated part. Thanks for the link John.

Hi Sjors.......no wood in this ship oven.....they burned the whale residue from processing the oil after most of it was cooked out.....

Thank you BE, it has been fun to create this.  It's not perfect, but I do like it.  Once the sides and other parts go on it should take away from the stark red and white bricks.  The front will still be bright, but the rest won't....and that should make a nice contrast.....

You could try a little wash over the bricks. Maybe the color could be 'burnt whale oil brown' (whatever color that actually is). At any rate, it would take away the 'new' brick look some. Either way it is a very nice addition to your build.

I agree, that oven looks fantastic in regards to dimension and scale.  A wash to tone down the red would really make it balance with the rest of the details on the ship.

 

I am really diggin this built.

Hi Dave and Scott.  I was looking at some washes for Model Railroads a couple of days ago.  They were a little scary for this in that they seemed to be too heavy as well as dark.  In reviewing my pictures of the real one, they are pretty bright also like they've been cleaned up.  My understand is they were scrubbed quite frequently to eliminate the odors as much as possible...I might do some experimenting prior to making a decision.

Here are some progress pictures.  I managed to get the 2 side rails built and mounted on the Tryworks.  As you can see much of the sides are not very visible, and start to tone down the raw brick look.  There will be a chicken coop and workbench on the aft side, so very little of the brick will be visible either.  Primarily only the front will be visible once done.....there are other tanks and bins to go port and starboard also.  Might manage some of these over the weekend...

I have tended to make my own washes. It allows me to control the color and consistency of the wash better than purchased washes. I agree with you John - experiment - do you have any left over material to 'practice' on?

Hi Dave, thanks for the input.  I have extra bricks and some cardboard left over, so I'm going to build a fake wall up a few layers, and play with that.  I was mainly just mentioning I had seen some commercial ones.  I would think the only control you could have would be to make your own.  I'm thinking a light brownish color very, very thin....something about like old smelly whale oil might look.....lol

Hi Piet and Popeye, thanks for checking in.  I probably won't be working on the wash until I have the other items around the Tryworks and see how I like it.  I think it will tone down significantly with the rest of the obvious areas covered up....It won't be hard to wash the areas if it still is too bright.  On the real ship it's pretty bright and doesn't distract the focal points.....more to come ........

Wonderful job on the stove John. There's a lot work gone into that, well done.

 

Looking at earlier posts I was wondering what kind of ship would need a stove like that, I take she is a whaler or a whale processer. Bit too big for cooking your fries on.

Hi Mobbsie, yes, she's a Whaler.  The last surviving wood Whaler.  Launched in 1841, now located in Mystic, Connecticut.....the oven or Tryworks processed the whale....

Mobbsie, yes it sits on a water cooling tank under the oven.  They cycled sea water in and out to keep from setting the ship on fire.  There is also a chicken coop under the workbench .... I guess if they kept the chickens warm they would lay eggs.....if not they wound up in the soup....
