Today, continues with the 1/32" sheet walls for the Hurricane House.  I'm making these parts first then adding the proper planks, or lumber to make the proper finish.  The pictures on the ship are just dry fitting to make sure everything is going to fit properly.  Then there is some trim work that goes on doors and windows, before painting and installing.  Here's some work photos but not the finished product yet.

nice start on the aft structure John........aren't they fun!      are they scratch,  or part of the kit?   going to look great when you get it fleshed out and painted

Hi Popeye, yeah, this is fun...it starts to get some personality.  This is all scratch, there is nothing in the kit, including the 1/32" sheets.  The only thing left in the kit, is some metal parts, and some dowels for the yards and masts.  Got a lot of metal work and soldering to do later.  The Davits are laser cut as well as parts of the whaleboats, and I think that is all that's left.  Lots of strips of Basswood though.  It should look great when painted up.

Yeah, there is some rigging and blocks left also.  I'm still debating over the blocks....they kinda suck, so I might either try to make my own or bite the bullet and get some from Chuck (probably what's going to happen).

She looks great John!   You are right about the color, very nice match - and your scracth-build-foo is impressive!

 

Can't go wrong with Chucks blocks;  got some myself and they are really really nice!!

I suppose I can chime in as well...having used the blocks from Syren Ship Model Co. They were uniform and easy to work with and even in the very small scale looked really good. You can't go wrong with these after market products from Chuck.

Hi Lawrence, with all the comments I'm receiving about Chuck's blocks, I don't think I have a choice but to get some.  Why get mediocre when you can get the best....

Today's progress has been to work on the details for the Hurricane House, fit, assemble and paint it.  Bear in mind there is another structure on the port side, that has a head, and a ladder to go below on, but each has a door (or hatchway) depending on how Naval you want to go, that still remains to be built, as well as the tiller and ship's wheel structure which will be built before final attachment to the ship is done.  Then there is a roof that goes over both structures to complete it.  I still have some touch up painting to do yet on the sides as well.  It is currently only sitting on the deck, and is not glued.

Hi Dave, thanks for the comments......The Hurricane House consisted of 2 structures, the one I have built so far, is the crew's galley, and a store room. If you notice it has a wide hinged door pointed forward to be able to pass food to the crew. The next structure is a crew's head, and more storage, and contains the ladder to go below into the captain, and first mate's quarters. There is the tiller, and a steering box, which covers the mechanism for the ship's wheel and rudder mechanism pulleys. All of this is covered with a roof, which also stores a couple of whaleboats on top. It is called a Hurricane House because it offers the Helmsman a sort of protected area to steer the ship in heavy seas and or a storm. Next I'll build the tiller and wheel mechanism and copper plate and attach the rudder, then buld the head and stowage structure.

Ooooooh, that looks really nice John!  Great progress you are making and nice colors too, matches the real ship.

Hello Sjors, glad you like the pictures and a little history too.  It is an interesting layout.  I'm not sure I've ever seen a set up like this on a vintage ship before, but I guess I have mostly studied war ships.  The ship's wheel/tiller set up is very different too.....the wheel mounts directly on the tiller and moves port to starboard with the rudder....it's all attached.  On the real ship it was not reassembled yet, but they did have this drawing taped to the bulkhead to show the person building it how it was supposed to look.   Is your table crowded this morning?  Coffee time used to be a few moments of solitude in the morning......now it's chaos and sea stories....our condolences Sir....

Yesterday was a strange day....however, I did manage to paint the rudder and copper plate it.  Today I'll build the tiller and wheel, and hoefully get started on the rest of the Hurricane House.  I do have to make the hinges and mount the rudder....probably first.
