Hello to everyone!

Wonderful to be a new member of "Model Ship World".

My interests are American Civil War ships, 15th thru 17th century ships, 18th century steamers along with Viking ship construction. Underwater ship archaeology for all ship types along with modern USN Naval vessels.

Have been building since I was 7 years old and put a few hundred models together in my life time. Really enjoy the plank on hull ships from kits and even scratch built a few smaller ones.

Currently my project is CSS Alabama from a old Revell kit which is being highly detailed from extensive research.

A couple finished projects are a 50% scratch built H.L. Hunley 1/24th scale "Cottage industries" 20 year old model about 95% accurate from current info and the CSS Arkansas (CI) from current info. (See Images)

If I can help anyone with tips or information, please feel free to ask and am sure I will be asking a few myself for research purposes and other model technics.

Gidday Johnathan and a warm welcome from the Land Downunder.

You have certainly found the right site for the flow of information and answers to any questions you may have.

I like the steamers as well particularly the era of transitioning from sail to steam.

I like the attention to detail in your photos.

We have had some fantastic links posted recently relating to discovered wrecks.

Looking forward to seeing some more of your work.

Wishing you all the best.

Mark.

Thank you, Mark @pontiachedmark I do have a very old steamer kit which I might build: ( Le Sphinx), seems to be a rare one in kit form and does have about 90% of the original parts to it as the others will have to be scratch built or custom ordered. She's a early steam beauty and have good information on research for her to do the build. I have mothballed the kit for now, this one is a hard decision to build as it seems so rare in kit form. I could go for a scratch build as I have all the plans but as you know that's expensive in costs. Thought you would appreciate this old kit. Here's a couple images:

Welcome to MSW, Jonathan.   I hope you'll start a build log and let us look over your shoulder.  From the 3 photos, your work is wonderful.

She is a real beauty.

Do you know the age of this kit?

As you say scratch building is  an option, to allay the costs you could make her a long term project.

Wishing you all the best.

Mark.

Mark, the kit is from 1961. From research the Musée de la Marine in Paris made the models back then. My kit is number #24, I can't find out how many were made but rumor is 100. All the instructions are in French, but no problem for me to build her. Good idea for a long term project.

Gidday Johnathan.

The kit isn't really old. She was made the year I was born. O.K. so we both may be older than I'd like to admit.

I think the hardest part of the scratch build is the choice of timber and sourcing / making the fittings.

I am limited in my choice of timber as the cost of Postage and Handling and the Aussie Dollar in the toilet makes it too expensive to source parts from outside of the Land of Oz. I am always on the lookout for Aussie timber that suits our scales.

1 of 100 is a rarity indeed. I can understand your reluctance in building her. At least you have the plans as a basis for any proposed scratch build.

I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

Mark.

If you find the 1:100 scale a bit too small, you should be able to take the plans to a copy shop and scale them up.

Jonathan - Welcome to MSW's site ! Since moving from Los Angeles to Atlanta, I have started to do research on Sherman's March and have visited Resacca, Kennesaw and Andersonville, where my great grandfather spent 1 month in Andersonville Prison until exchanged. He was 16 yrs of age. I look forward to seeing some of your ships from this period. Cheers ;)

Robert, my great-great-grandfather was a "guest" of the Federal government for a year at Fort Delaware after being captured at The Wilderness.

Cheers!

Thank you and Interesting family history, Sherman ransacked our property also in South Carolina and Georgia. Many of our family members were killed by his March threw those states. It was a bloody war for Americans on both sides and we also had killed a few in the March from what I have on our family history during the CW.

If you are interested here's the best two site for CW period models:

ccoyle - these prisons were hell holes on both sides. Both sides expected to have a quick 'war' and therefor, both sides were not prepared for the overwhelming amount of prisoners. Cruelty on both sides 😓

Jonathan - there is some amazing history in all of our pasts! The flagshipmodels website has some great looking models. Thanks for the tip on this page ;)
