Hi all,

As promised, a little bit of colour and l think it makes the deck stand out quite nicely. I did, however, have a mishap today. I lost the capping piece to one of the deck pumps, hence the reason for their absence. I will make a duplicate out of wood, it's a bit of a pain but its my own fault, l must be more careful.

Best wishes as always.

Hi all,

Thank you Edward, for your kind words.

Today l added the white paint, put together the Carronades and painted them. I also fitted the Eyelets, Cleats and Belaying Pins, phew, that was a fiddly day.

I was just about to drill the first hole for eyelets around the formast when l noticed with horror l had fitted the Mast Bit Support Post the wrong side of the mast. I said "oh darn it" or words to that effect. At least l noticed and was able to rectify the problem.

Best wishes as always.

Hi all,

This morning l am looking at the Channel's and the fitting of the Deadeye Strops (51) and Chainplate Straps (49)

The problem is that, as shown, it is not possible (imo) for them to fit into the cut out channels. l would have to cut off the two lugs on the Deadeye strop. Ok, that isn't a big problem, however l would still have to widen the channel. The alternative to widening the channel would be to close the gap in the strop to fit, however, by doing so would prevent me attaching the Chainplate Strap. All the above can be dealt with one way or another but the final problem is that the strop is too short and so to that end the Chainplate Strap won't stretch between the strop and the main wale.

Raising the main wale is not an option ha,ha.

I remember seeing on one build, l am unable to remember which, the use of wire to replace the kit parts. This may be the route l shall take but l would like to know what l am doing wrong, have l missed something.

Best wishes as always.

The Lazy Saint.

Hi LS, I have same problem with my Sherbourne build and have gone down the making my own deadeye strops route, to which end I've ordered some 0.4 mm copper wire to make them. When the wire comes I will post some photos of my new homemade strops.

Hope you get yours sorted soon as you are flying with your build.

Looking good by the way.

Hi all,

Thanks for letting me know you have the same problem Edward, at least l now know it's not something l am getting totally wrong.

I managed to get some 0.4mm brass wire from Hobby Craft today and made my own, it was fiddly but most of it is hidden within the Channel's. I am happy with the result, although l only managed 3 today, perhaps l will complete them over the next few sessions.

I also applied another colour.

Best wishes as always.

Coming along nicely ...  Loving the deck colour btw.. (Don't forget the Rudder ☺️ wee bit of maneuvering to install it and u may need to turn the boat upside down, so watch those deck fittings etc)

LS I'm glad to see you got your chain plate problem sorted😀

I also started my mast on Sherbourne by hand but then saw a simple jig in the mast and rigging forum where you use a cordless drill and I got it sanded much quicker.

Keep up the good work 😃😃

Sorry I don't have a photo of my jig

Hi Eamonn,

Thanks for the tip re the rudder, l will keep it in mind. I am looking forward to you adding to your build log as it has helped me no end so far. I have my fingers crossed you start your rigging before l mine.

Hi Edward,

That sounds like a great idea to speed up the sanding process, and save a bit of elbow grease.

I saw your answer to the chain plate problem, very good indeed, l am looking forward to seeing them fitted.

Hi all,

A busy day today, it was far to hot to venture outside so l got plenty done in my den.

I completed my Deadeye Strops and Chainplate Straps, a very fiddly job but i managed it ok and, imo, to a reasonable standard. I also finished the shaping/sanding of my Masts, fitting of Cleats to those Masts and finally, painting.

Best wishes as always.

PS At no time ever will l discuss Rudders, Rudder hinge assemblies or copper eyes associated with hanging Rudders. 🤬

Looking good, you'll be rigging soon😃

Re rudder, I know you don't want to think of it but once you've done it you can go

"YESSSS" , it is fiddly but you get a sense of achievement.

Ab Hoving pointed out in his card model tutorial that model rudders don't have to move.  I took his suggestion and made the strapping out of painted card for the rudder on my Prince de Neufchatel and pinned it to the hull.  It is good and secure, plus looks nice.

Hi all,

I Spent the rest of the day tying blocks.

Aft Mast Boom.

Aft Mast Gaff.

Fore Mast Gaff.

Very fiddly but very absorbing, no wonder ships like HMS Victory can take a year or more to complete.

My next task is more of the same but on the Fore Mast and Aft Mast, but not tomorrow, tomorrow l am going fishing with my Grandson. 🎣

Best wishes as always,

Hi all,

It seems like l have been working on the Shrouds all day, (ha, ha, l have) the time just seems to fly by, l don't know where the day has gone, and it was the Devil's own job getting the Deadeyes exactly level. I have left the tag ends on as l would like to tweak the odd lanyard tomorrow.  Once l am happy l will apply a diluted wash of wood glue to seal the knots and then trim.

Best wishes as always,

The Lazy Saint.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your kind words Edward, they are very encouraging. I have been busy on my next rigging tasks and have completed the Fore Mast Shrouds and Back Stays. I have also fitted the stays from fore to aft and applied diluted wood glue to all knots and trimmed.

My next task is to make up rope coils to hook over the belaying points for the Back Stays and to paint the brass rigging hooks black.

Best wishes as always,

The Lazy Saint.

LS I've got to agree with Eamonn looking quite a saucy schooner.  And yes didn't that rudder just appear as like magic😏😏

Oh and thanks for the positive comments on my build👍👍

Thanks guys,

A long session today, but l have completed the rigging. Its a proper cats cradle, l cant imagine what the victory would be like. Although the rigging has been the most challenging modeling task l have ever had to do, it has also been the most satisfying.

My next session should see the completion of the project.

Best wishes as always.

PS Last image is the audio book l am listening to during the build, inspiring stuff and l am picking up some nautical phrases.

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.

Earlier in the build you may remember me saying that l lost parts of the deck pump behind my radiator....... don't ask, please. I had planned to fashion somthing in wood to replace, however, I have taken a lead from Eamonn and his build and installed a pair of Elm Tree Pumps, they look quite smart, thanks Eamonn. They just need painting.

Best wishes as always.
