Thanks D, it's ok...not my best work though but it will do, Thanks again, I like to primer but that was a nightmare last time I tried it...think I'm gonna check for hi build in my stash

Posted

Morning all, todays update.   Got the stern completed the rub strakes installed and she is in primer, used automotive primer this time instead of acrylic, seems to dry harder and I don't think the topcoat will react with it, gonna switch gears here the underside still need a bit of work and I'm out of glazing putty, should be here Friday, That will allow me to finish below the waterline and prep it for paint.

In the meantime I'll work on all the other stuff, may start on the masts and yards, not sure yet pics follow

one thing you can try........I did it on the Nordkap.   paint the hull with diluted white glue.....lt dry and do a light sanding......then give it another coat....light sand.  it should get rid of the cracks and gaps

I yam wot I yam!

I'm taking Popeye's advise and am coating the hull with diluted pva to help close the gaps and cracks, gonna take a few applications so while I'm waiting for it to dry I figured I'd make the ships boat.

I mentioned in a previous post that I thought the boat supplied with the kit was to large, the overall shape was ok but just too big.  I decided to try my hand at making a boat using the kit boat as a buck.  The technique I'm using is one I tried on my Hannah.  The credit for this method goes to Jersey City Frankie.

You start off by wrapping your buck very tightly with plastic wrap, I twist it tight and apply a clamp, the you just glue down strips of card, these are manala folder cut to 5mm widths, I'm using super tacky pva

IMG_0351.JPG.0f5073302ce997dbb0b83f44bd5612ba.JPG

IMG_0352.JPG.9553f1a95abaa79c82b683c57d163559.JPG

continue adding strips till you cover the whole thing

IMG_0353.JPG.3c80b20f72e4d466b3e102457a0e2cfa.JPG

here you can see I've trimed the stem, she is still full lenght at this point

IMG_0354.JPG.1b686e7aaffdd7825a6239be20b4423d.JPG

I decided to cover the sides with wood putty to eliminate the clinker look, I could have left them if I'd been more careful laying out the strakes

IMG_0357.JPG.071f571cd1a75145885d99818fda0728.JPG

you can see the boat has been trimmed down to its final size, once all this has dried you can seperated the boat from the buck, the plastic wrap makes it very easy

IMG_0358.JPG.c75c7b3600ef361fc433f7320ec5142c.JPG

a transom was made

IMG_0359.JPG.70945d5f50c667feedb0e2657277222b.JPG

and installed

IMG_0360.JPG.bd0e8ea2c0a7d363a146010ff5f82961.JPG

then some detail was added

IMG_0361.JPG.06dfb3b9831e896ef096b0d729ddc129.JPGIMG_0362.JPG.b39e5efb07d412d04613f05a9b3e2068.JPGIMG_0363.JPG.7b810e6be1f504fbeb116e33be66ef3a.JPGIMG_0366.JPG.0f9ac59ee6f83bff2e85ccb7965c226f.JPG

IMG_0368.JPG.b4b7cece414ed5520aaaa5d86f9ff40e.JPG

and that's about it...still requires a little sanding and paint, may just paint it black or dark green and ochre insideIMG_0372.JPG.920a0c5577be8d82b28607b8a7ded828.JPG

she'll hang off davits at the stern

Decided to get a little paint on the hulls

The ships boat

IMG_0375.JPG.0ab7967d6e300fba7b54e064a964530e.JPGIMG_0380.JPG.b311c108993c980c554497eb639b632e.JPG

Still a little touch up needed and the main HullIMG_0382.JPG.c603e970bb94485b5b2e813d53c7a6b0.JPG

I decided to go with a tallow bottom, want to finish this by May 1 when the shipyard will slow down/close for RV season

I decided to use the kit catheads and davits, they are beefy but the proportions look ok to me,  after all this is Jumbo the clipper, so they've been prepared

IMG_0377.JPG.fd67e8033b51dfc402c729293a0c38ee.JPG

As Denis (Popeye) and I have both mentioned the plywood provided in the kit was very old and did not machine well, so for the kit parts I need to replicate I did some tracings, these were cut out and will be used as patterns to fabricate the new partsIMG_0376.JPG.b2eee7411b1bfe32db05c6e62174b91f.JPG

Well that's it for today, thanks for the likes and comments

so your going to go with the kit box masting?  if you plan to do something like a schooner,  you won't need to use the tops.   I think they are a terrible shape anyway.   shape them something like the Connie....flat fronted with rounded corners.   nice job on the boat....awesome job  :)

Na not really... I'll be slowing down for sure...no pics of the hull paint as yet, but I've been working on more deck furniture

In my opinion, what the kit provide for deck grating needs some improvement just an orange card with hole pocked in it...so i built up some grates using the same technique I used for my Hannah build, for those interested in the build details the link to that build is in my signature.  IMG_0383.JPG.cf735850a7a59238196b2d43c7ddfa2e.JPG

u can see the kit supplied grate above the wood one

here it is complete

IMG_0385.JPG.cb6d5d6ca3896c6e0822d0d3a70eec8e.JPG

and with the comings applied and paintedIMG_0386.JPG.5b5272e6a90e3b3116224c5307592ff4.JPG

I made it a little larger then the kit piece, also cobbled together a deck plate to cover the rudder post relocation hole IMG_0384.JPG.45dde4d697ed96844d735ae22a5577a4.JPG

and that's all for today, still havent got to the jigging up the masts to see what I'm gonna do there...maybe tomorrow, more likely next week, under the weather.  Thanks for all the likes and comments

I have a different way of making grating 'wafers' in my U.S.S. United States log.........kind of a lengthy thing......not expecting it to catch on  ;)   that's what you got for grating in your kit?.......I got this small metal sheet in mine.

Thanks for all the likes and comments...I finally got around to rigging the mast stock together just to check it out and it is way too tall

IMG_0387.JPG.dd20fe02c94adcc5c1a2c01b5766a1e6.JPGIMG_0388.JPG.0668364489b367aa62bdbeb8ead6fc4d.JPG

you can see here the main would be about 28 inches tall, thats 142 foot in scale, if assembled per the kit dimensions and instructions, not gonna do that, like Denis I'm leaning toward a  topsail schooner, plenty of dowel stock in the kit to do that.  I'll have to do some research to get some mast dimensions that are more realistic then the instructions provide, plenty of info in Historic Model Ships, plus Search for Speed Under Sail has a ton of plans with dimensions one could clone.    Jumbo/Agilis has scaled out to 86.4 ft long and 24 ft at the beam.   I'll be sure to post my numbers once I have them.

I also found sometime finish the paint on the main hull

wow....that looks really sharp J!  the two tone really makes the hull pop!  I do notice though that you might have less counter at the stern than mine,  and with the addition of that small front bulkhead I made up,  your bow carries over the stem.  these are not bad things by any stretch.........from bow stem to transom,  mine is about 18 inches long.  you see what I mean about the masts.......mine is going to be worse because I added the mast pots.  did you assemble them using the full lengths?  yea....there's around 5 inches that slide into the hull,  so you'll lose some there.......but the height is out of scale.   even with the finished model that we were shown,  the use of the full lengths,  really puts it out there.  I'm no whiz with the computations,  but trimming them each segment even an inch or two,  might be  a lot better.  do some checking on this,  but I believe that both masts are two segmented

Hey, Denis thanks much, I assembled them to the kit dimensions, way out of scale.  I have worked out what I plan to use as finished mast height and yard and boom length.   I’ll post the numbers later, as I’m on my phone right now.

you've got a little more hull length then me, probably due to the additional rib you added

ill not lose more then an inch into the hull as my blocks are mounted flush under the deck,  gonna have to trim my sail sticks big time🤪

Todays update...first here are the mast and spar numbers I promised, the original numbers came from a plate in The Search for Speed Under Sail  of a ship named FLY, she was captured by the British in 1812 for blockade running and renamed HM Schooner Sea Lark, I chose it because the overall deck layout looked very similar to Jumbo, and she was a schooner rig.

First thing I did was blow up the page so I could read it, then converted yards and inches to feet

IMG_0392.JPG.295923930be756b0d380b9bf56d023ab.JPG

once I had those numbers it was a matter of converting them to scale lengths and actual lengths

IMG_0393.JPG.51d692f09fa026d79f4ea1dd97087947.JPG

The above chart shows the results...seems she's still gonna have tall rigging, not as high as box stock but still up there...main mast total will be close to 18 inches

piddled around with some more small stuff...completed the rudder and oars for the ships boat, just some carving and sanding from plank stockIMG_0398.JPG.6fae6c4515225ccf35ef85f8001e9618.JPGIMG_0394.JPG.4e920c2389e9002c7590cc29a74d7d7e.JPG

and started work on the forward companionway...sorry I didn't get pics from the very start, you'll see her below in putty and primer,  I built it up from card stock with a wood base for coaming, once the general shape was achieved a coat of glazing putty was applied to smooth it all out.  It will eventually be painted and trimmed out to match the deck houseIMG_0395.JPG.482372a6244ec389ea2af3ded1f48409.JPGIMG_0399.JPG.9e067c36bba1728980b1006c06a0f3ed.JPG

Thanks to all for the likes and comments...I finished the initial companionwayIMG_0400.JPG.b902e03913a7d1e953de9837c9e2f6a6.JPG

and promptly scrapped it when I set it on the deck, it just looked stupid

So I set about making a new flush type hatch...stripped off the house and doors to use the original coaming and made hatch side to fit within itIMG_0402.JPG.c8b2ed31ed0fb92e8fe1ce020c11ddd2.JPG

then made the hatch cover...it has a slight curve sanded into it, and glued it to the sidesIMG_0403.JPG.534c8ff6bc7b22e9c3c41ab78c9ea188.JPG

and separated the pieces for paint

IMG_0405.JPG.b01cc393e54da8199cffdec78caeb0aa.JPG

and mounted it on the foredeck

IMG_0406.JPG.ce60c1e0a7ae320902508f5519fe1066.JPG

made a template for the railings and transferred them to some strip stock, still a bit under the weather so the ride to the bandsaw will wait till I'm up to speed

Well that's all for today, thanks again
