Complete N00b Starting Out

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm Joseph. One of my favorite interests outside of crafts was masted sailing ships. Now I've had a lot of experience with making paper models and assembling wooden kits (Ugears, if you're familiar, primarily). With this quarantine, I decided I may as well try my hand at making my own ship. So, I started by purchasing two kits off of Wish. I'll start a build log of the "high quality" kit soon enough. Ultimately, I'd like to put together a Black Pearl. In lurking before joining, I'm gonna make several models prior to taking on the Pearl.

Outside of ships, I'm quite the annoyingly crafty person. Basically, if I'm interested, I'll give it a whirl. My biggest hobbies are origami, knitting, and crocheting. Recently I've started up with beading

"Experience begins when you start." Your beading and crocheting experience will have application in rigging ships, so you're already on your way. Enjoy!

Just start with something very simple and do the best job you can on that. There is a learning curve. The most common mistake most all make is biting off way more than you can chew. Square-rigged ship models aren't really the best choice for beginners. Try starting with a fore and aft rig first and work up to the complex rigs. (Don't ask me how I know this! Most of all of us have been there.)

Welcome to MSW.  When you finally chose a model to start, open a build log so that when you have issues, others can help.

Thanks everyone! And I do have a kit I started and nearly abandoned before finding out about this place. Mental note: don't order ship kits from Wish. I decided to pick it up again because f it, but I didn't start the log yet

Edit: just read that a lot of Chinese companies rip off legit sites, and part of why I joined was to get help when I eventually work up to the solid Black Pearl kit I bought. From ZHL. And I can only assume the one from Wish is a knockoff. Well, once I have worked through those, I'll find legit companies. What's the best way to tell?

For pirated kits.. have a look here:   https://modelshipworld.com/topic/181-banned-kit-manufacturers-on-msw-pirated-kits-prohibited/

Unless there's a  box photo and the vendor is Chinese, I wouldn't touch it.
