I have been following your build for quite some time. It is a great one. Just noticed the gun tubs and the tools, sponge etc. They look perfect. Did you make them or buy them?

Hi Robert, I will be looking in to see how progress is going, enjoy.

Mort - thanks, I made those bits and pieces, mostly from brass wire and plastic tube and rod. Plus some fuse wire for the coil on the wormer.

 

I haven't got my act together to post photo's of my latest progress but will get some together soon.

 

Currently the spars are all hung and I'm 2/3 or so through the rigging.

Time for an update.

Sorry they are infrequent, I do it at work   which makes it more difficult.

Here we go then:

All Fore Yards now hung and sling, truss pendant, Jeers, parrells and tyes in place as appropriate.

Then the same for the Main Yards, hung and rigged.

Just hung the Crossjack Yard on the Mizzen for now.

And then hung the Spritsail Yard with sling and strop and the Spritsail Topsail Yard with Parrells and a halyard.

Preparing the Lifts for all yards, just hanging loose at the moment.

Returned to Mizzen and hung the Topmast and the Topgallant Yards.

All three masts now with Yards in place.

The Fore Topmast Yard Lifts and Buntlines.

 Main Yard Lifts and the Bunt and  Leechlines – these lines really annoy me, they run from the Main Top to the Fore Brace Bitts, so right through the only real area where you can get a hand in to make off belays, which means you constantly catch, push or pull then.

All the Mizzen Lifts, and Buntlines for the Topmast Yard.

Then the Spritsail Yard Lifts & Buntlines and the Spritsail Topsail Yard Lift. Then the Spritsail Yard Sheets and Cluelines.

The Spritsail lines belayed to Beakhead timberheads.

And hanks hung for them.

The Fore Yard Sheets and Cluelines. You can also see those pesky Main Yard Bunt and Leech lines behind. My tip of the day would be to run these lines but leave them hanging loose. Then belay them at a later date. That should help avoid pulling out a block (which I managed) or just stretching them so that they end up hanging very loose.

Finally

I have decided to hang one or two of the ships boats from the Quarter Davits. That then leaves more space in the waist to allow a better view down into the Gun Deck. Also I like the way a boat on the Davits looks. So before I get into the next round of rigging I assembled and loose rigged both Quarter Davits. I had predrilled for the bracket pins a long time ago and they went on with no real problem by using a pin punch between the deadeyes. I have left some of the rigging adjustable so I can set up the boats later.

And so onto the Braces. Because they are outboard of the hull and might get snagged I am rigging they loose at the moment. First the Fore Yard all run but then loosened off.

Then the same for the Main Yard.

 tightened down the Main Yard Braces to allow me to make up and rig the lizards on each side, then slackened off again.

That’s me up to date with photos, it’s getting a bit busy in there now. I really love the way a model starts to come to life as the rigging goes on.

I have also rigged the Crossjack Yard with Braces now.

And I’m starting to make up blocks and lines for hanging the Driver Gaff which is the next task.

I like the way you wired the three stern lanterns. I intend to try and put LEDs in mine as well. Although I still have a long way to come to that, I have been thinking about it. The smallest copper tubing I sourced is 1/16 diam from CMB. Do you think the inside diam is enough to accommodate two tiny wires?

The wiring was a tight fit and I used very special wires.

I doubt that you will find normal wires to go through.

The ones I used (from work) are Kapton coated wires, the Kapton is a good insulator so is applied very thinly.

A search online should find you a local supplier.

                      I use enamelled wire for jobs like this (the stuff of transformers and other wound components) which is as thin as you like.

If you're really struggling, you only actually need one wire if you use the brass tube itself as the other conductor.

Nick just noticed that you put the revised yellow on her. Looks great. Strangely when I was there my camera lens and film pulled a colour very similar to the "new" colours. It is weird when I look at the photos now. I always saturated the yellow as I thought is was wrong shade. Looks so good. I magnify every picture you post so as i can figure out what to do! Keep going and and keep posting!

So here we go with some more updates.

There is a bunch of them so I will split them across several posts.

Moving onto the Driver Gaff I pre tied all of the rigging to the end of the Gaff, what a birds nest!

But after gluing and trimming it looks a little more sensible.

Getting the Gaff ready to hoist.

Up she goes.

Now in place and having the rigging tensioned. That includes the Mizzen braces.

Now the Gaff is complete, ready to move to the Boom.

Boom also now in place.

The Boom sheet being tied off.

The Ensign Staff going in. I tried long and hard to get a flag to sit right. But whatever I did I was not happy with the way it hung. So decided to go without flags at all.

I included little toggles and eyes in the Signal and Ensign Halyards, just for the hell of it.

Now allows me to finish the Quarter Davits and tie them off in position.

And test hang the boats.

Then finish tensioning and tying off some of the braces which still needed doing.

Thought I might share these

 

This is how I create the rope hanks I have been using on belaying pins.

 

 

 

And the rope coils.

 

 

 

Next onto the three guys on the Bowsprit. Loose rigged.

 

 

 

Then tensioned and tied down.

 

 

Both sides.

 

 

Then the ships boats. As I am hanging two from the davits I will only mount two in the waist. This allows a viewer to see past them to the detail on the gun deck below. Boats now mounted and tied down.

 

 

Then make off the drops from the tackle pendants.

Then onto the Anchors. 

 

 

The Starboard Sheet anchor secured.

 

 

The Cat falls rigged for Bower and the anchor secured.

 

 

 And the Cable led into the Hawse hole.

Now the Tack/Sheet/Clue garnets can be hung from the foremast yard and the lines run and secured.

 

 

And the same for the Main Yard.

 

 

 

Here they cross then reeve through the hull to be tied off on the gun deck cleats, tricky job that.

Finally the other boats now hung from the davits. 

 

And I do mean finally because that is now me all done. One HMS Victory complete.

Upper gun deck with guns now in place.

Sorry about the big differences in photo quality, never was my strong point

Details added to UGD including some gun adornments of my own (info from the restored actual Victory)

Waist - Q Deck going into place- bits,companionways and skid beams etc added first.

Now have Q Deck level planking done, internal bulkheads in place and painted, painting of the upper externals etc.

Had to tape over the various deck cut out - have you noticed that if you ever drop something it ALWAYS drops through an empty cut out. And then holding a delicate model overhead and upside down is definately not the best proposal.

Plenty of time now been put in on the sharp end. Beakhead Bulkhead & capping, Roundhouses, figurehead, grating et. nearing completion. Still some finishing to be done.

The screens, binnacle, wheel prepared. Quarterdeck guns placed.

Lots of detail work required on the stern but pleased with the results. Note wires left hanging that will eventually run to the three ships lanterns. I have part fabricated them in preparation, managed to find a thin wall brass tube the the wires will just run through. i won't fit till much later as the will be so so easy to damage (you can just see in happening)

Channels being prepared with dead eyes etc.

And the Entry port painting done.

Next thing, lots of work on the sides, more photo's to follow.

Just found this photograph series while looking on Pinterest. What a build!!! Wish I had half of your skills. I'm currently building a Caldercraft Victory and because of my not so good technical English I have some problems with the manual provided. Looking to your great build photographs I already found some of the answers to my questions. Although I still have lots of issues, one of them being the mounting of the deadeye strops on the channels. I tried several positions but, for me anyway, they don't seem to fit in the tiny slots in front of the channel. And there are two small lips facing one side, I really can't figure out why they are there. Even if I should cut them away the brass strops look to wide to fit the slots.

I know now that it was not my best idea ever, but this build is my very first of a sailing ship model. Only build an Amati Bismarck first to start this hobby, and that was a peace of cake comparing to the HMS Victory...

Now I will look to your photographs until I worn them out... 😉
