Old Collingwood Posted March 1 Author Share #2492 Posted March 1 Evening all, I have been pulling my hair out applying a few coats of my Mig Ammo Lucky Ultra Matt Acrylic varnish, despite shaking it till me arm nearly falls off and brushing it on very thnly - do you thnk I can get the Blues on the jacket arms to go (fabric shade) flat - Nope, they are staying like a slight satin sheen, simply dont know the reason or answer. Darius359au Posted March 1 Share #2493 Posted March 1 One matt varnish I've use a fair bit for mini's is from The Army Painter ,you can get 17ml dropper bottles or spray can's and can use it like a primer as well as a final coat! Old Collingwood Posted March 2 Author Share #2495 Posted March 2 So I can confirm - warming up my Acrylic Varnish does help the flow and dulling (with a Matt Varnish) I think our temp being lower over this side of the pond to you guys over there may have something to do with it as at a guess I would have been brushing it on at a temp of roughly 12*C - 53*F but heating it up to around 25*C seems to help - still needs a good shake after warming though. Old Collingwood Posted March 7 Author Share #2496 Posted March 7 Morning all, so - where I am at right now, I have flat coat varnished about 30 of my French dudes with more to do, I also have some British that need the same treatment - however I have ordered a bottle of Loctite Flexible Gel Super Glue ( I have read a lot of good thngs about this glue) the idea is when it arrives I will cut away what ever figures I have done, that can then be placed on my dio dependent on areas being finished - like the road and orchard. I got the service to follow Masters of the Air; an excellent series on the air war, Anyway, my Admiral said Napoleon was a waste of time. I'm glad I didn't spend the bucks to see it on a theater. They played fast and loose with the battle scenes. Waterloo was a joke. Napleon led a charge, no battle at La Haye Sainte farm or Hougemont, the Prussians attacked from the west(?). Oh and Wellington kept the Alliance forces on the facing side of the hill, rather than on the back side. Old Collingwood Posted March 9 Author Share #2502 Posted March 9 Morning all, I have been toying with the idea of trying to do some mock smoke coming from the rifles - muskets, I have been looking on the net how to do it - cotton fibres like in cotton wool wrapped around a wire and glued then the thin wire wrapped around the end of the barrel - or in my case glued to the inside edge of the bayonets with the cotton pulled over to hide the wire. Some who are really good even simulate the orange - yellow colour of the flash and some blackening but I have seen them using an airbrush to do it (think it would be difficult with brushes) So I am not sure as if its not done right it might look tacky and spoil the Whole thing. Old Collingwood Posted March 15 Author Share #2508 Posted March 15 Morning all, while re flat coating my figures - (I have done about 50 so far) some are taking a couple of coats as my dreaded Blue is being stubborn, I have also been doing lots of reading from all the different Waterloo links, and I have decided to leave my Polish (French Guard) Lancer out of my dio, as they did not actually come near to the farm but took part further towards Hougoumont and further in the centre attacking Ponsonbys Greys charge, but in exchange I have decided to add a couple of British 95th rifles that I will place on the road at the extreme end near the kitchen garden - they will be placed pressed against the wall because of the Lifeguards blasting past. Old Collingwood Posted March 16 Author Share #2509 Posted March 16 (edited) Morning all, think I found out the secret to getting a nice flat finish with my Lucky Ultra Matt varnish, after a thorough shake (my arms are still shaking now lol) I put a small amount in a dish then after loading the brush I removed most of it against the dish wall, then I removed even more on some tissue, then when I ran the brush over the figure it was like just adding a slight wet finish in a really thin layer - yep it seemed to have worked. And long last a few pics - sorry for the poor quaility quick shots in the kitchen. OC. Old Collingwood Posted March 16 Author Share #2510 Posted March 16 So I had a go at some wool smoke - I added a small blob - ball type bit on the breech and tried a bit coming out of the muzzle, but I wasn't convinced as it just looked like wool, so I removed the muzzle bit but also had to cut away the bayonet (not a problem as some did not have their bayonets fixed) I also cut away at the smoke on the breech till there was only the smallest bit left, this is about as far as I would go - just cant make it life like. The smoke is tricky, the breech smoke looks great in the first picture but not so impressive from the other side. I’m sort of following along here because I have sea spray in my future and I think smoke and spray are extremely difficult things to model.
