Santa Maria by Lapinas - FINISHED - Amati - 1:65 - First build

Added shrouds with deadeyes. Could be better.. but to fix bottom deadeye "holders" alignment is a bit too late :)

What I mean for future builders:

This is going to bother me forever :D

This is a great page about making shrouds: https://suburbanshipmodeler.com/2017/10/07/shrouds/

I have tried to maintain spaces between deadeyes consistent by using these hand made tools:

You're making good progress, mate. I must have missed this one - I normally keep up to date with the pre-1500 builds.

That will be interesting. Making your own deadeyes can be a real trial (don't ask me how I know), but if your tool works out, it would be worthwhile sharing it with others.

By the way, when it comes to attaching the chains that secure the lower end of the deadeyes, be sure to take note of the angles, as in Lapinas's post # 62 above. Also note from the diagrams in that post that real chains are rather different from the ones supplied with the kit.

This build brings back memories. 😉

First of all, you have chosen a very good kit of Amati. Second, you build it very very good! Very crisp lines and additions you made yourself. For your first build this is extraordinary!

keep up the great work,

Pete

I have finished the sails. I have ordered 4 different batches of bitumen, but when mixed with turpentine it was not giving be a nice color... So after last failure I gave up and went to my local grocery store and bought some black tea 😄

When I was joining the main sail top and bottom parts it looks like the thread got too tight and most likely I am going to redo it.

Lapinas, hello was just thinking, I wonder if you ever finished your  sails. So glad you got your sails.  All that care and attention to details is going to pay off big time . I like my Santa Maria, but yours is nicer great job, looking forward to the finish line.

Will you be building the other two ships,La Nina and the Pinta ???

You might try ironing it. You can always re-do it if that fails.

I redid the main sail, but got the same result... So I have tried ironing it and it helped. Thanks! 😃

Not sure yet. I was eyeing more recent sail ships recently used in sport :)

I have painted sails today with acrylic paint. I am quite happy with the result.

I had to paint from both sides of the sail. Not sure if it is accurate, but pain has seeped to the other side after painting it on one side, so I was basically forced to do it this way :)

I have spent 5 hours, but the progress is barely visible!

I've found that this also applies to yardwork as well as modeling.
