Glory of the Seas 1869 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - 1/96 - medium clipper

Are you able to rig in your sleep by now, Rob? Beautiful work, as ever.

THAT is one skill, I have yet to master.  Actually, I focus on time management.  Each day, I get about an hour and a half to work like a madman.  So I have really spent time perfecting any repetitious processes....like painting and sheaving blocks....making eyebolts.....securing eyebolts to blocks, most importantly....establishing a good sequence to do all this.  Preparation and planning for the work cannot be overlooked.  Work inward out.  Prep and drill all the top fairleads, the tie sheaves in the masts and block/stay eyebolt holes.  Not to mention banding for stays and futtock shrouds.  Its a symphony.

My evening goal is to finish off the topgallant shrouds and begin the addition of the ratlines.

Again, thanks for the fine compliments and daily visits

Rob

Druxey,

"Sleep-rigging" what a concept! Now, imagine if you could do that and get a good night's rest at the same time.....

Actually I think Rob has just about perfected his masting and rigging technique to mastery level while still getting a decent night's sleep. Besides creating a museum masterpiece with an incredible level of detail, his assembly pace is nothing short of amazing.

Rob. The rigging is truly impressive. It must be either a labour of love or a penance. I do admire your dedication to the task and the structured way you approach it.

Now the long task of adding blocks and rigging the yards and their furled sails.

It begins with the chain clews for the upper topsail yard.  Threading  chain is like threading a wet noodle through a straw.

Rob, the magic of cameras is that we see images of your amazing progress instantly. That belies the amount to time and energy you put in, to make these pictures possible. As a teenager, I've done a small amount of plastic sailing ship model rigging (always scratch building, as their accompanying plans were unrealistically simplistic). I know to a degree, that to get the highly accurate results your model displays, involves hours of thoughtful fore planning and careful meticulous work. I just wanted to acknowledge that.

When doing the chains for the Red Jacket, I first tied fine sewing thread to the chain, then stiffened the other end with CA glue. I think you will find it much easier.

Rob,  I was antiquing with the Admiral recently and came by a turn-of-the-century clothes wringer ... just the sort that can be used in your ingenious method of embossing copper strips for ship hulls below the water line (shown in detail in your Great Republic log).  It had clamps for attaching to most table edges, a wooden frame with adjustable pressure leaf springs and the rollers were in good shape.  The price was $125 - which I thought reasonable ... but as I was examining the wringer closely, the Admiral thought I didn't need anything like that.  Whatever, these things are not 'fast movers' ...

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

Rob, in a similar idea to that offered by NIc, also try some very thin wire as a leader, as it is stiffer than thread.  It could be a single strand from the multi-core electrical wire but must be thin.  I use ni-chrome wire as it is a little stronger; I simply double it through the leading link of the chain - it is thin enough for for both ends of the wire to easily pass through the block , fairlead etc.

cheers

I run thin wire through the first link and then thread it through the block an such.  Just sometimes the chain will bind inside the block or sheave and I have to work gently to not break anything.

Note the wore at the end of the chain dangling.

Right.  The wire I use has to pass through a single link of 42lpi chain.   It’s pretty thin stuff.   Smaller then thread for sure.  Winding off a small motor.

Pat……your Victoria is amazing and a testament to you own expertise and skill.   Your great mind’s doing just fine.

Wow....$125.  I found mine at a second hand store for $20.  Keep looking....and visit Ebay...sometimes they have them there.   All I know, is that the method I devised is the simplest and fasted way to make thousands of copper plates.....in no time...for the cheapest cost...too.

Just a quick update.   I’m taking a slight break for a few days.  The temps have been in the high nineties and my shop is not air conditioned.  I just don’t have the energy to endure the temps.  It just sucks the life out of me.  I just can’t endure it.  The house is air conditioned but not the shop.

Maybe this weekend or next week, I’ll ramp up again.

Rob,

Priority no 1 is to take good care of the shipbuilding crew. After all, nobody else can fill in for you. Even Donald McKay knew that principal, as he treated his workers as extended family. Things have been so warm here in the Litchfield Hills of Western CT that the city has opened up emergency cooling centers. Take good care of yourself.

Right.  Next week will be in the mid to high seventies...so we will get a reprieve.  Shoot...I cut down a dozen 10~4" trees yesterday with my son-n-law and stacked the trunks branches for chipping and it was 97deg.

Work is possible outside....but in a hot room..........I'm dead.

Rob,

First, it's great to see you back in action on your beautiful Glory of the Seas model. I hope this means temps have moderated enough to allow you to comfortably work. I am still impressed with the amazing organizational skills you display in your disciplined rigging process. Seeing all those loose lines in the before picture and how it all is resolved in the after one drives home the point that such intricate rigging is not for the faint of heart!

I’m getting close to stepping the fore mast array.  And then mounting the main yard.

Shwuuuuuh…..I can’t believe I’m almost done with Glory of the Seas.   Just a few more tasks.
