Glory of the Seas 1869 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - 1/96 - medium clipper

Ok ……I took some more comparative pics with the models at comparable sea level.

enjoy the stark contrast and enormous size of Glory compared to the 900 ton Curry Sark.

Clipperfan, we should keep the scottish connection quiet, it will be the Elgin Marbles all over again if Scotland gets independance. Its not surprising though as Scotland had some of the best deepwater slipways.

Simon, Ach, it's way too late laddie.... the "Scottish connection" goes 'fair dinkum deep' as Donald McKay himself was a Scottish Immigrant from Nova Scotia who gladly became an American citizen and one of the most innovative Clipper Ship designers of any nation. "Cutty Sark" herself is a quite beautiful lady with an yacht like loveliness to her Hull and an impressive rig as well. She well deserves all the accolades she's won over her Century and a half of service.

Pity that we Americans didn't respect our own heritage enough to spare at least one of our own magnificent Clipper Ships, which we now can see from Rob's amazing comparison, in many ways, were an order of magnitude in a league of their own.

And again, if you compare the Great Republic to Glory, she would be dwarfed like Cutty is to Glory.   Just amazing……..

Rob

Rob, thanks for sharing some waterline equal views with us. As I suspected, mammoth "GLORY of the SEAS" in fact does dwarf "Cutty Sark" in size. However both vessels clearly are also Clipper Ships. We can also see how Donald McKay's final "Medium Clipper" really emphasized carrying capacity over pure speed for the sake of speed alone represented by Extreme Clippers.

Indeed, however the GR was also an extreme clipper……magine that!

"Great Republic" as originally launched was 335' long with a 53' beam while "GLORY of the SEAS" was 265' long with a 44' beam. At 1:96th scale, Glory would be 9" shorter and 9 " narrower as well. Both models would be impressive at 33" for Glory and 42" for Republic, just counting hull length alone. I always thought it would be an exciting display to see a great number of McKay's vessels all constructed in meticulous detail at the identical scale. Interestingly, McKay's gargantuan Clipper "Donald McKay actually eclipsed the rebuilt "Great Republic" in carrying capacity, making her the largest ship in the world back then.

Cutty Sark and Thermopylae were both fine examples and were heading for the same fate, Cutty Sark was lucky and rescued by an old captain, Thermopylae was not so lucky, used as Torpedo practice by the Portugues navy.

City of Adelaide lay rotting on the Clyde for many years while people argued over who owned her, who was going to pay the mooring fees and eventually towed her upstream and was abandoned. It was not until a consortium from the City of Adelaide raised enough funds to transport whats left of her down under to make a start on her restoration that things started to improve for her.

My American cousins do not have a monoploly on not respecting their heritage.

Some years ago I created a plaque of clippers to compare them……in the same scale

Rob, that's a very nice display plaque. It's quite reminiscent of a 2 page display in "Some Famous Sailing Ships & Their Builder Donald McKay". Key difference is your inclusion of non McKay vessels.

On left are depicted evolution of McKay's Packet Ships while on the right are his progressive examples of his California Clipper Ships.

@Rich, @Rob,

Dear Friends, I decided I have small favor to ask you in benefit of Glory of the Seas herself and our joined commitment  itself I believe.

As much as I love Glory herself I want her to be in her homeland so that AS many people Can see her hull in her true form and participate in and her history wrote so magnificently and so sorrowfulpy at the end. For sake of IT so as many people Can see her,

I already wrote an email to Boston maritime and i plan to wrote  to San Francisco museum as I believe those two towns have strongest Bond to any clipper of era. As I dont think I have rights and i dont own right to work I  consider we All Made, I decided to do IT merely as a  donation. Im not asking more than symbolic 500 usd - for full one year of extensive  labor plus insured shipping.

I would not sleep Well if i hang her on ebay , that idea IS far and  cruel to me as I would Keep her myself rather.

but if you knew someone who could value  appreciate her truest form yet reconstructed with help of Michael Mjelde yet unseen photographs and as i Will always be proud with building with such authorities as Rob W and Richard Jones are on the subject !  and Can appreciate true  meticulous boxwood detailing of Captian Cabin true moldings ornamentals and proper planking strakes and her coppering, All true deck details AS various molded Sheeran and Lines ...  Food sake of future generations please kindly  let me know. I owe you both,

sincerely Vlad

Funny….the GR was 1/128th and she is still longer(not bigger) then the GS.   I didn’t realize that 1/96 would still be a big model…..since all my other 1/96 models are all small clippers compared to GS.   She proves that compared to other like scaled clippers,  Glory was large.

Thanks for the fine compliment and your continued support.

GS, 250 ft length, 44 ft beam. GR 334 ft length, 53 ft beam.

Rob, sorry, I thought GS was larger. The below photo of your GR compared to the photos of the GS in post #'s 2293 and 2294 make the GS look larger but I now I understand it's the scale. My memory failed on GR's scale, I thought she was 1:96 as well.

I know……scale plays tricks on us.  If my GR was in 1/96 she would be nearly 10” longer then GS and nearly as wider.   She would be an enormous model.    Probably as big as Vladimir’s 1/72 version of GS in comparison.

GR looked larger also because of her unique stand that enlarged her perception .

I have yet to devise a unique stand for Glory.

Rob, it's great to see you back in action. I can never get enough of your impressively beautiful model.

Keith, now that we realize how substantial "GLORY of the SEAS" was, she would have been dwarfed by the "Great Republic." It's hard to fully visualize this but since we're all familiar with football fields, GR would have been practically 112 yards long! Imagine walking the decks of a floating football field....

It would nearly be like the comparison of the CS to my GS.  That drastic!  That's how darn big the GR was. The main reason of many reasons why I had to build her for my collection.

Thanks for the compliment Rich.  I hope to finish up the main mast today after work.

Rob, while I was intrigued with your imaginative approach to modifying. "Cutty Sark" hulls to recreate McKay Clippers (a process which admittedly has its limitations due to the substantial differences between UK and American hulls) it was your scratch build of "Great Republic" which really impressed me with your in depth modeling skills. You outdid yourself with the GR and GS now appears to be surpassing even that magnificent creation.

The reuse of Revell's hull....made my conversion so much simpler.  I was being creative. where I had no other immediate option.  Even with my Donald McKay diorama...the hull is underwater...so no real issue exists, other then the scale issue.  the diorama was created not merely for the ship, but what I could do with creating active large water.  I will probably not complete this model...because hull accuracy is more my thing these days then when I begun this diorama.

Well, I hope that I can outdue her.  Short of addition of sails....I will be foregoing them and focusing on mast and yard detail.

Remembering that recreating her hull and its intricacies was my main goal....but I can't leave her there...I will be compelled to detail out her masting and rigging too.

Thanks for supporting my McKay clipper habit.

Rob, I meant no critique of your unique approach to recreating McKay's Clippers by heavily modifying Revell's excellent "Cutty Sark" model. For one thing, you were the only one even attempting to build "Glory of the Seas". That project is what initially gained my attention. I really admire the dramatic seascape of your "Donald McKay" and hope you complete that effort some day.

Meanwhile your Glory is more and more resembling the magnificent profile of her docked at San Francisco in 1877. Her spectacular masts really match her impressive Hull. It's beginning to show exactly why Glory was so popular when she sailed into sight.

Fantastic depiction of Great republic Rob and wow glory Will be masted soon.

It once again gives me proof and goosebumps that true treasures and  highligts of these Giant vessels are not in there body but All in thier Sphisticated rigging and mightly sails views !

Instead of trying to move Glory away i should start of Fully rigging her and learning to make those beautiful sails! Then we have amusing continuation for Few years ahead :)

Sorry try to hijack thread Rob, pic of her Lines Once again. And i Made new proper  big Cabin planked  roof over christmass - weathered.  Still commited to her. :)

Back to my insanity.  I laid down the sub veneer on the port side....once dried I will then again begin adding the coats of acrylic stone to form this side of the hull.

The starboard side has its second coat already and it is dry...a few more touch-ups and it will be ready for final finishing.  I'm waiting to get the starboard side to the same level of finish before I finish both sides together.

I pray, I have not lost a faithful audience...thinking I have gone completely mad..straying away from hard and true planking techniques for a back alley quick remedy for success.  However I have always contended that I use unorthodox techniques and materials when I build my models.

Remember friends it is the finished product that maters...not how we get there.

Here are some pics of the doings from my frankensteinian laboratory......

Vladimir, wow, my but that's an impressive Starboard Broadside of your Glory! I welcome your new found commitment to fully masting and rigging your model. Rob is demonstrating how the true beauty of these magnificent Clippers is in their harmonizing of beautiful hulls with spectacular sets of sails. I believe yours being at a much larger scale will look even more lofty with a full suit of sails. Welcome back!
