Hi to all existing members,

I returned to modelling 5 years ago when I retired, resurrecting my interest in plastic WW2 aircraft, mostly at 1:72, and famous warships, but now at 1:350, with the exception of the Revells type VIIC U-Boot, and Flower Class Corvette at 1:144. the later which I modified to represent HMS Compass Rose from the film The Cruel Sea. Space is now my problem, but my wife has said she will allow me to display a nice wooden model ship in the dining room!  After some searching I have joined the MSW as the ideal website to help me build a suitable model. I have studied the suggested models and think I will buy the Caldrcraft HM Supply. Good choice?

Hello and a warm welcome from Sussex to MSW. Not built the Supply but someone will speak up.

This is a good place to get guidance, don't be shy about asking.

Regards,

Bruce

Welcome! I had a teacher friend who did a unit on The Cruel Sea. He asked me to do a Flower-class corvette for him, so I did the 1/100 scale card version from Modelik. It was really a bit over my head for my skill level at the time, but I got it done.

As much as I love Caldercraft, I think there are some more fool-proof kits available today, thanks to advances in design and higher standards for instructions. After you read the suggested thread, have a look at some of the offerings from Vanguard Models or Master Korabel, for starters, and also search for build logs with the words "first wooden ship" (or similar) to see what other beginners are tackling.

Cheers!

Big welcome from down under in Australia. I have visited England on many occasions, work and social, but never made it to your part of the world.  My daughter spent her honeymoon there last year and loved it. So post Covid I hope to get there.  All the best...please enjoy this site.

Welcome to the Forum.

I discovered this useful link the other day ... New to ship modelling? But what do you build first? .

...  I'm currently building Vanguard Models Lady Eleanor Fifie, which is a Scottish fishing vessel. It's not too large and can be bought with/without sails.

As others have said, this is a great website with lots of friendly advice.

All the best,

Richard
