Golden Hind 1575 by bosco72 - Airfix Classic - 1:72 - first ever model build

Hello, this is my first model kit, started it the other week. Decided to post on here for tips/advice/ideas and thoughts. Thanks.

My thoughts were to stay close to the box art as it looked way more fun that the two replicas I had looked at.

At this point had no idea, if I'd got the correct paint, how it would react to plastic.

Did a couple of coats, no water.

Did a light coat of burnt umber acrylic, 25/75 water.

Started to add a black wash, lamp black acrylic 5/95 water, did not remove, let it dry on.

More black wash 5/95 water. Also you can see the deck part is twisted, it came that way.

The lighting makes it look orange/red than it actually is.

Stared on the colours, at this point I'm still not sure which colours I was going to go with and was still deciding if I was going do all the strips of colours.

Putting the string/thread in tea, trying to age it.

using magnifying glasses to try and paint the hinges on doors, it was interesting.

Tea for the thread was too light, or I used the wrong tea, so used two spoons of instant coffee over night and got that desired effect, top left of the image.

Started to add green wash in small areas sap green acrylic, 25/75 water.

Added a white wash to the deck as I wanted to start to build up a really worn weathered look to the boards.

Then stated to add plank lines with a 0.5 fine liner pen and more wash.

Nice start to your build.  I have always been amazed at how plastic modelers can paint plastic to make it look like wood.  Good job.

Indeed a nice start.

I would try to see first if the parts of the hull and decks fit properly. And even glue them together if necessary
Otherwise, if they dont fit properly you may have to touch up the paint later on .

 

Airfix parts usually fit well, But you never know

Still unsure what colour to do the windows, I like the idea of blue, to seem like they are reflecting the sky, but it looked very unateral, so went for grey.

Intend to put multiple washes over the bright colours.

Excellent work on the paint scheme!

Added ropes to the mast to see how it would look, unsure if these ropes would be tarred and should be black and what the function actually was? (coffee dyed string, the thickest of the two string coils provided in the kit)

First attempt at the shroud and ratlines using the provided tool. Intend to document the full process.
