Hi All

Like I said before that most of the parts was missing the shop sent some 4mm x 4mm walnut but this was to small.

I think you call them cat heads !!!  so had to make them out of 2 x  3mm x 6mm walnut glued together..

Hi all

Nice to be back again.

When I finished the hand rails I found I was short on the posts .

Time to get the board out that they came from, it was a good job it had a lot of surplus wood left over so I can make some more out of the same wood.

Hi all

Re Life boats ( none in the kit but SOS must have had them ) I did get 2 wooden kits and started to build one but  I chickened out I don;t know why as I built one the same size for the Victory and that was OK so putting it down to a bad kit.

So got 2 metal ones this is the start of painting the hulls.

Hi all

As I had some time on my hands ( waiting for some wood ) I had a go at weathering one of the small sails.

Before I did this I did not know if the sails will shrink or not, I did e-mail Mantua asking them if the sails are pre washed about 4 weeks before I did the sail as sooner or later I had to know but like before I never got a reply  ( so much for the support ).

Some photos are of the sail wet and one dry .

It was soaked in tea for 4 hours.

Hi Denis,

I sure does look like it shrunk some. That is why I was afraid to soak mine. The color is nice but shrinking might be an issue when hanging them.

Hi Vince

The top photo on  the left is the dry stained sail, the one on the right is a larger sail, I did it that way to show the difference between stained and non stained sail.

The stained sail only shrunk about 0.50 - 0.75 but if I had pinned it a lot better I would not have known it had been soaked  for 4 hours.

The middle photo is when it was wet and pinned.

The bottom photo is the sail before it was stained and a line drawing of the outside of the sail.

I am sorry  I should have said that the dried stained sail is  smaller in size than the one next to it that is not stained, sorry I should have explained that in the first log.

Hi denis, been at the hospital with wife (getting better slowly), catching up on your blog, as usual a first class (bravo)effort, hard to beat them All Blacks(rugby),have not started mine as yet, mulling over color etc, want to do a good job. Another interesting aspect of researching members blogs is what tools, work benches are being used,ie lego, clothes pegs, clamps, various adhesives ,and so on,a great learning tool in itself. keep up the good work .Ed

Dennis,

Stunning work. I have so admired this "ROLLS ROYCE' of kits, but it is still above my skill set. Your work is so impressive. You mentioned that you had to file the decorative pieces. How did you then "re-golden" the edges. You are, of course, absolutely right the extra work, and time really made a huge difference. Well thought out on your part. It looks so perfect. I will follow your build and learn from you as I go along with my project.

Sad ending for this amazing ship.
