On a whim I looked up Dockyard Carving tools on EBay and was surprised to find new tools marked “Made in USA” offered for sale.  The guy selling them claims “Dockyard Carving Tools are back!”

Does anybody know anything about this?  Has anybody used these?

Yes.  Is this from a guy in Iowa?

Kurt,

I can’t tell.  The two postings that I looked at were different.  The first said that they were located in Rochester, MN.  These tools had dull red handles.

The other was located in Florida and showed the Traditional packaging with the note, “Appearance may vary.”  The blurb claimed that Dockyard chisels are being made again in the USA.

Roger, according to Dockyard  Tools USA website, he took over the business from the original founder.  The Carving Glove Guy is one of their distributors.  Check the link I posted above for more info.

I have some of the old ones.  Made in the USA with Cherry handles.  The ones I have I got from a shop in Iowa that attended many carving/woodworking shows in norther  IL and southern WI.  I know it was after Dockyard closed originally but they had them in stock I guess.  They had them advertised in their catalog - the entire line.

I guess the only way to find out is for somebody to buy some and test them.  They were known for high quality steel.  I hope the line keeps the good quality.

I bought some 2 mm chisels from the Carving Glove Guy a few years ago.  I already had 3 mm "original" Dockyard chisels that are probably 25 years old.  The physical appearance is identical and their cutting and sharpening characteristics are also the same.  The sharpening set is also a great help for the V and U chisels.
