Our Wendameen display model is really getting, shall I say, tattered. It was never cased and 20+ years of being exposed really shows. So I'm going to build another one to replace it.

 

I didn't bother with the whole kit, nor did I take any rigging, wire, or eyebolts because I have plenty. Here's the rest of the kit contents.

First, the plans

 

Next comes the hull, laser-cut caprail, and the fittings.

First item is to fill some tiny holes in the hull casting. Most of what you see will be sanded off.

Like I said, most of it is sanded off.

I should show you what I'm replacing. Damage you can see, and things like the caprail is half unglued, etc.

I'm glad to see you building this. I've often wondered what sort of challenge this kit would present.

Yes, that would be interesting - Justin is a good friend of mine. However, my purpose is to make a display model for our gallery. It will have a water base, but not a real diorama.

Another quick shot of primer, then I added a rubrail of .020" square styrene.

After a week of doing "other things" I was able to shoot a coat of white on the hull.

Rather than mask off, I decided to freehand paint the deck. It will need a second coat, and then I'll touch up the bulwarks.

After the second coat, it just looks terrible!

So I decided to strip off the paint and re-do it. It was not an easy job.

It’s refreshing to see that things don’t always go smoothly even for the professionals.  It gives us amateurs hope.

So after much thinner, rubbing, scraping and sanding, a coat of primer, more sanding, and a spray tan, the result is much more pleasing.

So now we begin to mask off the deck so I can re-spray the white.

Hello @MrBlueJacket, I'm also working this model.  Question.  The instructions state: 

 

Is that accurate?  Drill a hole all the way through?  Looking at your photos, it seems you did the same.

Yes, drill all the way through. I've put the Wendameen aside for a bit, doing a project for Al.

OK, now back to work. Finished masking off the deck.

Then sprayed white and removed the masking tape. Looks like a little touch-up will be necessary.

Added the caprail and skylight frames. Still needs touch up.

Spent the evening drilling holes...7 on each side, plus 6 on deck.

Over the weekend, I painted and installed the wheel and binnacle. Then I cut 20 pieces of brass rod for the belaying pins.

I inserted the belaying pins, using a piece of 1/16 thick basswood as a lower spacer.

 

Then I used that same spacer to cut the tops off evenly.

 

The glue won't show once rope coils are hung over them.

Over the weekend I fashioned the bowsprit and attached it.

Then I painted and attached the cowl vents
