Hello, I'm a new member with absolutely no experience with model wooden ship building.  I have followed a few posts and have decided my first build will be the Bon Retour, french fishing boat.  I'm not going to produce a build log at this stage, a bit daunting, however, I am going to use existing build logs to keep me on track.

Welcome Ian. I would encourage you to start a build log. That will get you the most help possible as many experienced modelers will be able to see how your doing and give you all manner of advice and help. 👍😀

Ian,  welcome aboard.  Please give considerable thought to starting a build log.  I can promise you it is much easier than planking the hull.  It becomes a very important tool, not only for others who may build the same model but also for those who can assist you if/when you have guestions/difficulties/mistakes to work your way thru.

Take care and be safe.

Ian there are so many good folk on this forum who are willing to help. Don't be intimidated by their works and abilities. Ask for help and reconsider posting. In one way or another we are mostly students of this subject with few masters.

Joe

I'll add to this... even the masters had to start somewhere and MSW is a form of mentorship.

Hi Ian - Welcome to the group, and as a fellow newbie, I definitely second the recommendation to start a build log. It’s easy, fun, and the feedback here is incredibly positive and helpful.

Welcome Ian,

Be careful what you wish for.   You now have 42,000 well meaning advisors 😀

Build log???  DEFINITELY.   As you are about to take a step in the build, look at multiple build logs first.   Do overs are common for nearly all of us, but they are fewer if you can spend a few minutes to see what others have encountered.

After you finish Bon Retour, you may want to consider the beginner through more advanced kits designed by David Antscherl at Model Shipways.   These will teach you great techniques. David is a member here so you have a first hand helper if you have any problems along the way.

Good luck

Allan

Hi Ian, and welcome. If you put "Bon Retour" in the search window (top right of this page), you'll be able to see the build logs of others who've made the same model, which I think should help you avoid mistakes and see solutions to problems you'd otherwise not be aware of.

And have fun with it - that's what the hobby is all about.

Thank you one and all, your messages are positive and encouraging.  I have been tied up since my initial post but should be a regular visitor from now on.  I will look at how to make a build log, I don't believe I'm not that far in that I can't start one.  I have planked the fore deck, mounted it to the hull the wrong way around and had to rebend it, so you can see I have had some issues already.  Thanks again I will look at other build logs before I go any further.
