Corsaro II by mtdoramike - FINISHED - Corel

The Corel Corsaro II is was an adoption from a fellow modeler, who decided to offer it for someone to finish it. So I adopted her with the anticipation of finishing her and hopefully turn her into a grand lady of the sea. Stay tuned for periodic updates. I'm finishing up on the USS Missouri adoption and will make the Corsaro my next project.

 

I have a great starting point here to finish her up. Most orphans I adopt are not nearly of this quality, I usually have to rip it apart and start over, but this is from a master modeler, so I expected no less.

I noticed while looking through the box contents, I noticed quite a lot of mahogany veneer and after breezing through the instructions they indicate that the hull can be finished in natural wood by using the thin mahogany veneer. But that isn't going to work for me. I will paint the hull. Now it also has colors listed if the builder prefers to paiint the model. But like most who know me will tell you that I look at lists and instructions as a suggestion and not a rule. So we'll see how that goes.

 

I have also pondered turning the Corsaro into a functioning R/C model with just the motor and prop being operational. But after looking at the height of the masts, it might be prohibitive requiring way to must ballast to stay upright. Like a mentor of mine told me years ago "never make something more difficult than it has to be" and "and if you are trying to turn a static model into an R/C model, revert back to rule #1 because there are plenty of other options that are made for that purpose". So it might be best to heed those words of wisdom.

I painted the hull, as well, and ended up using that thin mahogany for a zillion other models. For example, it worked beautifully as the outside surface of a large model of a stagecoach.

Rick, I saw a Corsaro II built with all natural wood and much prefer the painted version you did. To me, it fits the model much better than the wood look.

I've been able to get a little done on the Corsaro, I've been a bit under the weather for the past couple of weeks. I contracted the Covid and the a few days later my wife caught it as well. It hit me pretty hard and just trying to fight back. We've all been vaxed up, and I thought I was going to get it, but BAM it hit me.

Good to see you back and making progress on the Corsaro.   Sorry to hear about the illness....I got hit after traveling by air last Christmas.  The cough and fatigue dragged on for a while.

Yep, That's what is happening to me Gary, it's like you start to feel better then it hits you again. We were told not to run the central A/C unit. So I ordered a couple of small window A/C units and installed them in two of the bedrooms, just to have some form of comfort especially since the temps in florida are hitting upper 90's.

I got the deck house all sanded and started laying the deck planking down.

The Docter said I have to wait another week or so before I can start any major sanding like the hull to allow my lungs to heal from the Covid or else wear one of those resperator type dusk mask. Here in Florida with temps hitting 97-98 is not an option.

got the hull all puttied up and sanded smooth. I had to back up and punt a bit because after planking the hull, I noticed on the plans and instructions that the top plank was supposed to be dropped 4mm or so below the deck.

Thanks Bob. I'm finally making some progress on the Corsaro and finally bouncing back after Covid, which took me nearly a month to start feeling better.

Glad to hear that you're on your way to recovery from Covid. That bug kicked my butt as well last December. I was pretty much on the couch with zero energy for 2 weeks before finally testing negative. I'd say it was a month before I was feeling fully back to normal.

Same here, I just felt like I had no energy at all for nearly a month. I wasn't allowed to do much of any hobby stuff like sanding due to the dust, which was fine by me since I didn't really feel like it anyway. But now I'm back ready to kick butt and take a few names.

Glad to hear you are feeling a whole lot better,  but ware your mask sanding at all times, safety first  😀.   Awesome  work!!!

Thanks Knock, I definately do for sure, but The doctor wouldn't even let me sand or cut wood up till a week ago even with a N95 mask. He preferred I didn't do it at all, but if I did, he wanted me to wear one of those respirator mask with the two filter canisters on the sides of the mask. I wear one of those when working with fiberglass, but sanding and wood cutting, it would be a bit much.

The vinyl graphics name arrived today and I couldn't wait to apply it. Meet the "Fair Winds & Following seas". It's an old maritime term I read some where. I started to go with just Fair Winds, but said what the heck.

Thanks Bob, I had them print up Corsaro II, but once I received it, I said nope, it deserves a better name because I wanted to make it a little different.

Unfortunately I received some bad news from my eye doctor the other day. I've been having trouble with my left eye and went to see him to see what was up. He found that I have a degenerative eye decease and ask me what all I did as far as using my eyes, he strongly recommended that I give up modeling and anything that I did where I had to focus for any period of time such as reading. He also said it is progressive in nature and what is happening to the left eye will happen to the right eye sooner rather than later. So I won't be adopting anymore orphaned kits and builds, hopefully someone will fill the void I leave. I would at least like to complete the Corsaro.

Wow, Mike, sorry to hear that about your eye diagnosis.   I've enjoyed following several of your builds, though I know you've said in the past that you were considering slowing down on the modelling.  Hope the progression is slow and does not hamper other activities too much.

Oh geez, Mike, that's terrible news. I'm so sorry to hear this.  

 

Have you considered a second opinion? I only ask this due to a medical issue that I'm currently involved with. My primary care physician recently retired and I had been seeing him about 35 years. About 10 years ago I told him that I had developed pulsatile tinnitus which is a condition where you hear a pulsating ringing in my ears that is in sync with my heartbeat. He dismissed it as untreatable and essentially told me to learn to live with it so that's what I did.

 

I recently came across some YouTube videos about pulsatile tinnitus made by some medical doctors who specialize in various forms of tinnitus and found out that pulsatile tinnitus can be symptomatic of several very serious problems that can only be ruled out by radiological imaging. So I began to research it more thoroughly and even found out that there are some treatments that are successful for some people which can actually make the pulsatile tinnitus go away.

 

Last month I met with my new primary care physician and I told him about my pulsatile tinnitus and he immediacy referred me for an MRA blood flow scan in my head. The results of the scan showed some possible blockage or low blood flow in a certain area and I now have been referred to a neurological radiology specialist for further imaging. 

 

So, long story short, one doctor's diagnostic opinion may vary considerably from another and what one doc sees as untreatable may indeed have treatment options that they weren't aware of. So you might want to do a bit of research on your own about the condition your doc says is untreatable and also seek out a second opinion.

I installed the stanchions and wire railings. I made a few modifications or deviations from the original plan. such as stanchion placement.
