Thanks for the reply.  No problems with delay.  Family life is important, too.

As to your question, the kit is one produced by Midwest Models.  Model Expo has re-released the kits. From what I glean here on MSW, it appears they did not change the models. (Maybe laser cut instead of stamped?) The peapod is the second Midwest kit I've built.  (I have 3 or 4 more MW models in my stash.) You might get a better sense of the kit from my build log (link in my signature).

I think it's a good beginner's model (shown as Skill Level 2 of 4 levels).  I would also suggest this kit for modifications. The kit is as a rowing craft. To push my skill set a bit I am adding gaff rig and sail which requires making a bit more of a keel (scratch built).  'Furled sail' is in the plans, too. This is in line with a plan as a lighthouse tender in Chapman's book book on small craft.

My feeling is a bit opposite of yours. Based on Chapman's drawing, the mast is 3" diameter.  At 1:14 scale that works out to be 0.214 inch. While 1/4 inch is a bit large it could be my starting point. However, aesthetically, to me that size looks small so I am considering 3/8" (therefore closer to a 5" mast).  Still have time to consider and I have to figure what size the rigging lines should be.

Thanks for your input. It helped me with my sanity check. Your photos on the step gives me a model to follow also. Those kind of details in build logs helps. (I over thought the process in my head.)  So, also thanks for the build log in general.

Thanks for the kind words @robert952.

Good evening, a minor update.

I spent the last two nights sanding and priming. For the sanding, I used 240, 320, 400, 1000. Over all three coats of sanding and primer; the Dory is looking much better. Considering my skill level (novice at best) I think I have a good foundation for painting this weekend. I ended up using surfacer 1200 for the final coats of primer.IMG_2381.thumb.jpeg.bc9ca5186052ec04addc3face3679aa6.jpegIMG_2381.thumb.jpeg.bc9ca5186052ec04addc3face3679aa6.jpeg

IMG_2383.thumb.jpeg.4c7a5f95d25467019348b549dfa6798f.jpeg

You can see some glue lines in the interior I could not get rid of. Lesson to be learned here is that be more diligent with removing glue overage.

Tomorrow I will wet sand with 5000 after the primer fully cures.

Good morning.

I finally finished my Dory this weekend.

Yesterday I spent day painting the Dory, between coats, and the dehydrator, I was able to get some layers on.

IMG_2393.thumb.jpeg.e1df6083fc2efa671d8124ffae344db9.jpegIMG_2392.thumb.jpeg.9ee45e7dc4dbbdd544a4207d9b8cd53f.jpeg

The interior is an off-white, and the exterior a yellow, and dark green gunwales and thwarts.

This morning, I finished up he final details:

Rigging the mast, and boom. Painting and installing the trawl assembly. I also installed the thole pins. Overall I am pretty satisfied with the outcome of my second model.

Reflections on the kit:

If I compare this kit the the Model Shipways kit, I found the instructions to be better. The size difference is nice. However I did struggle with the size and my airbrush booth. I guess I need to invest in a bigger booth. :)

I definitely learned a lot from this kit, and it would be interesting in a couple years to redo the kit to see an improvement. Some key take aways:

1. I need to be more patient. Case in point, I mounted the stand just by doing the measurements in the kit, instead of stepping aways and doing it by feel so the Dory would be more level.

2. Painting yellow sucks. It is such a hard color. I really struggled to get an even coat.

3. Tieing small bowlines and figure eight knots are not fun.

I am looking forward to my next project, which will be the planking tutorial, instead of the Norwegian Pram. I will tackle that kit in January.

Jim, as a first time builder I really appreciate the detail of your log and posting the steps and photos. I have a Swampscott Dory kit made by BlueJacket and have been quite intimidated as the instructions are not what I would call robust. Your log is really helpful to me as I set out on my first ship build adventure. Congrats on your accomplishment!
