Last year before my uncle passed away he had bought me a this model.  He never had a chance to send it, my antie sent it to me earlier this year.  I looked at it, and decided to put it in the stach , thinking  some day maybe,  I have been modeling for four years now, mainly  wooden kits. And for the most part I have been having the time of my life,   learning how too build and  to tie rigging was and is the one of the  most rewarding thingI did for myself.  From my first attempt  making the Santa Maria  from Amati  and my first posts I was hooked, @Louie da fly told me back then the my first  planking looked like Roo Doo, , lol actually  he said I should re do my planking, it was pretty bad lol. . He provide me with information about planking,  and directed me to MSW Data base, and I have been trying to learn how to plank ever scence.   Rigging is a different story, I love it, don't know why  but ratlines are my favorite.

Building and rigging is  a lot of fun, if you have instructions,  I love  kit Building  but bad instructions are the worst, that is why it will come as no" Surprise " which model I buy next.

But in the mean time,  the lack  of instructions  and the most enoying  rigging diagrams  I have ever seen, I find myself  needing a break, and  Building  a plastic  ship that look fairly easy to glue together and  a very complicated  paint job that will give me a lot of enjoyment  learning how to paint it.  I have been painting for over 50 years, but never an airbrush,  and the model paint is some what different,  and the brushes are very  very small lol. I now have a brush that has only three hairs on it for painting eyes on figures  😳

20250419_173513.thumb.jpg.c22e006d54ea77b32d419e327b6032f8.jpg

So, Step one, the stand and hull. Next step two add a few more pieces,  then start painting.

Looking at the logs for this ship , and  I have booked  marked 4 so far I am sure there is more but I read slow.  . Ok opening  statement  out of the way, time to learn about the Hind, one thing  so far no one knows what' colors she  was.

Looking forward to learning about this ship,.

 Thanks for looking in,

Bob M.

I am letting my inner

child build and paint this model. And he is having the time of his life again :D. We started Easter weekend  and had to decide which colors to choose.  First off,  I primed everything.

Then decided to paint it as I see on the box, lol the instructions say #33 black for the cannons  that's it. You pretty well have to paint it as you like or think. This will be what we think it looks like.

I tryed a little painting on the front wall , pretty shakey but will get better. Then  I painted the sten wall , made up the four cannons  and got the crew ready to paint.20250422_145626.thumb.jpg.f4262f44131d418bde321f8686ff83ab.jpg

She going to be a very colorful ship when she finished.

I pretty sure some changes to the rigging,   deadeys , sails and ropes will be needed to be replaced. Excited about making my first sails . As far as the kit gos. Some of it is just to plastic  lol. I wanted to build this for fun and to see what changes I will make.

The kit comes with five figures,  four workers and one, Sir Francis Drake the Captain, and the new supervisor  for the ship lol.

The masts went really well. I Have a

couple of spots that need to be touched up, but overall I am happy with them

Only four cannons to rig, the rest are dummy barrels. Today I painted gun port lids, pretty easy with speed paint,

Now it just a matter of cutting them off the rack glue them on and just a small thouch up will be required.

So now I just have one more coat on the green then start painting the white.

I may get to the ratlines by the weekend. I can not use the kit supplied deadeyes and lanyards. Even the channels have to be changed I think , so progress  will slow. That's OK, it only has been six days so far for this build, and it is cup season so that will definitely put a slow down on things

This build seems to be going pretty fast, I am even looking over to my Bluenose I , I might just start the hull while waiting for a Surprise to sail this way.

Talk soon,  don't blink, you'll miss it lol

I’m looking forward to this one!

The Golden Hind is another of Drake’s ships (along with the Revenge) and is one that I have had a strong interest in.

I actually used pictures from below decks on the reconstruction of the Golden Hind in London as part of my reference material regarding gun carriages for my Revenge.

Thought i would drop of mine on, built over 20 years ago now and still on display. Reason put on though is that you like rigging. This was rigged using he Noel C L Hacney book for the Airfix Mayflower. Well worth a look on ebay for

@Thunder nice looking ship,  did you use the kit supplied sails?

I have to help the First Mate get her green house set up, hoses to run barrels to fill that sort of thing.

Hopefully I can get back to shipyard latter today. I have to trim the white,  that will make it look more presentable, and Sir Francis Drake  could not agree more lol20250424_121205.thumb.jpg.41da89ab95383a6deadbe99bfb2ab9eb.jpg

It will look a lot better after I trim it out but it is coming along nicely. 20250424_201811.thumb.jpg.4801f08bd9ed675d45e74674bd1e16e5.jpg

The white  trim will really make the Golden Hind look pretty decent I think.

There is lots of painting to do on this kit. I much prefer working on wooden kits.,  and someday  may want to build this Golden Hind in wood, but thats highly unlikely because I  got a stach of kits to last a life time, and another Surprise is on the way. Lol Coming up to renewal time soon ,  wow four years, where does the time go.       Later my freinds,  thanks for all the help, and for everything you all have done for this greatful happy modeler lol.

Hi,

Yes, they are the kit sails with a bolt rope superglued round the edge and the cringles on each corner. The Mayflower Airfix guide does take you through all of that.

More painting, plus more touch ups :D. This seems to be the biggest part of the build, painting the model . Only the ropes are not painted,  and I am to shakey to paint straight lines anymore.

A little more green then a little more white followed by touch ups.  The red strip is done  lol.  Add the blue curtain next then it's on to the cannons.  Real life yard work and the love of my life knows her wish is my comand, has more green house things that need attention 😞  No playing till Monday , but then we are going for the big guns. All four of them.

Thanks for looking in and yes @Keith Black I broke up the Bowsprit yard off , for the first time  lol.

Thank you MSN for all the resources here to help build a ship. Never expected to be having this much fun, there is always something new to try,  After I get this ship painted I going to paint  a schooner,  the Bluenose.  Later my friend's.  :10_1_10:

@GrandpaPhil the First Mate says try painting the kit supplied sails. If they don't turn out ok she will sew me some new ones. So this is the sails with the first wash coat. I will glue on a bolt rope add some highlights  should be good.

But now it is TIME to start rigging.

20250430_122453.thumb.jpg.cdb458516adf36daeab04138c5eed8af.jpg

Sir Drake says we are short about six feet of .5mm black thread for the upper deadeyes,  plan is to use tan .5 mmm then tar it black(paint).

The first set of shrouds are installed and seizeing is not all that bad. I can smell ratlines  in the air.

I still have the three walls to paint, bow, mid ship and stren , but I am in my happy place with ratlines so close lol.

I have several ways to rig this ship, I have not decided yet on how far I plan on rigging.   Apparently  she is rigged  pretty much the  same way The Mayflower is rigged, so looking at my Amati Mayflower for inspiration  lol.

 Talk soon , Shipmates.

The making of the sails. This morning I thought I take a break from rigging and see what I was going to do with the sails. Yesterday I brushed on a coat of Holy white speed paint  thined with water about 40% . A quick coat and leave it, after it dryed I clear coated it.20250430_114930.thumb.jpg.96765082691f455f316445d03a6a659a.jpg

Today I came up with a plan, lol. Rodney,  my late friend , told me about G-S HYOP cement, said it was great for rigging,,but I never really tryed it. Anyway  I cut the sails in pieces,

20250501_103049.thumb.jpg.2867a4d18c65063bf81bcef742b9599c.jpg

20250501_130623.thumb.jpg.32c5da505d5d089efd43f9d341df7695.jpg

Then I used a 1.3 mm rope for a bolt rope. Glued it on , seized the ends  and found using the black x-acto to cut them out was the best.

20250501_131236.thumb.jpg.d22c056d5b9a3392a45001458400ee1b.jpg

Soo ,, then I had to see what they looked like.20250501_131314.thumb.jpg.f5dbe00506806bef2459193039e41579.jpg

20250501_131642.thumb.jpg.9019e53b4f7bec0b18a2bea5cc9283fb.jpg

And here are my sails, I going to airbrush some highlights latter,  but I think they will be fine. The Frist Mate said they are Beautiful  ,oh my they look fantastic. Lol I think she doesn't want to make  cloth sails  lol 😆 😂

Well sails are done, back to rigging,  I really  thought the sails would be a problem,  but some how it all came together nicely.

Back to rigging.

Can you belive the amount  of fun you can have, just putting a kit together,  they are all different,  and have enjoyed each. I can hardly wait for my next Surprise  on my next ship that I will buy. Lol.

latter my friends,  I can smell ratlines  and my heart beats faster just thinking about them lol.
