Hi Kester,

Thank you for that bit of information about the cherubs as I didn't know that. That's what so good about this site, the tips and historical information that is shared. :D

I don't know wether Chatham Dock will see her returned there in the foreseeable future but it is nice to that part of the original ship is there for the 250th anniversary of her launch :)

Cheers

Hi All,

Before the Forecastle deck could be fitted extensions had to be made for the Main Top Bowline Bits and the Fore Topsail Sheet Bits, as the kit supplied parts fit on the forecastle deck only where as they terminate on the upper gun deck on the actual ship.

The Main Top  Bowline Bits happened to be positioned over one of the deck crossbeam supports which I was not prepared to cut out so I cut two 5 x 5mm pieces to fit between the beam and the deck and then glued a 0.5 x 5mm strip that covered the block and the beam to give the impression that the bit was one piece.

The Fore Topsail Sheet Bits were simpler to extend by just adding some 5 x 5mm legs to them. The deck was then marked out and two holes cut in it so that the Bits could pass through.

Hi All,

After the underside of the fore deck had a couple of coats of white it was then fitted. The mast is only dry fitted to make sure all the holes line up while the glue dries.

The next job will be to plank the deck.

Hi All,

The deck planking has begun. I have decided on a four butt shift for the forecastle deck and the deck will be tree nailed. After marking the centre line and the lines for the shift pattern the first planks were laid. Please note there is no shift pattern in between the gratings as the small distance between them would mean cutting a lot of very short planks :o. So the pattern will start with the first plank outside the grating. :)

I have also added a binding strake next to this plank on each side. these were made from wider stock than the supplied deck  planks of 4 x 0.5mm and a 5 x 1mm plank was used, these will be sanded down to 0.5mm when the deck planking is completed. A scarf joint was used to join them.

Hi All,

Sorry I have not posted an update for a few days as my internet connection has been down but I am back up and running now. :)

The forecastle deck planking was completed and sanded. The deck was then marked for tree nailing. Because the planks are only 4mm wide I did experiment with pencil marks to simulate the nails but I did not like the effect so after a bit of effort I was able to produce enough 0.5mm tree nails from a bamboo skewer, I know these are a bit oversize but I could not produce anything smaller in a reliable size or quantity and they should look OK once sanded down, I hope

  • 9 months later...

Hi All,

I have not posted an update for quite some time and not much has happened to the build until last month when I got it out of mothballs and started work on it again.

In the last update I was halfway through tree nailing the foredeck, this has been completed as the following pictures show

I have also made the  lids for the gunports. This involved a modification to the hinges as the supplied parts would look to bulky and out of scale. The first picture shows the supplied parts and how they are meant to be fitted. I have dispensed with the hinge pins and their supports and modified the hinges by straightening out the loop and filing it down to about 0.75mm thick and also reducing the width of the main body of the hinge as it was too bulky, this can be seen in the second photo.

The 'pins' on the hinges will be fitted into holes drilled into the hull above the gunports and make the lids look a lot neater I think.

The following photos show the construction and painting of the port lids which is fairly straight forward.

I will post another update very soon :)

Hi All,

The deck treenails were trimmed and the deck was given a complete sand with some fine paper then the lower rails were fitted, they were painted before I glued them down to avoid getting paint on the deck.

You will also notice in the following pictures that the three upper gunport lids have been fitted on the port and starboard sides. I glued these on now because I want to rig them before the channels are fitted as in would be rather difficult to access them once the channels are on.

I have also made and glued on a facia board to cover the front deck and rail above the round houses, the gap I'm referring to can be seen in the first two pictures in the last post.

Another update soon :)

Hi All,

An extra piece of trim was required on top of the facia board to create a border the inside of which will be painted blue and the trim will be yellow ochre. The trim was made from 2 x 2mm square section Samba from my stash of timber.

The tops of the round houses were masked off to prevent them being painted, as the first picture shows, and the facia was painted.

I have also rigged the top gunports this was done with 0.10mm rigging cord and the seizing was done with some fine beige cotton which will be in the next post

The top front rail was fitted next it was fairly straight forward, as the rails and timber heads were all laser cut parts, so only a few adjustments were required to fit them inside the head rail posts.

5mm blocks were used to space the rails while the glue dried. The port and starboard rails were fitted and the rest of the timber heads were fitted after the glue had dried.

Hi All,

While the rails were drying construction of the channels was started this was a straight forward task of planking the pre-cut channels with 4 x 0.5mm planks, the only modifcation to this section being the four brass pins added to each channel for extra support when fitted to the hull.

The long pins that can be seen in the last two photos line up with the frames while the short pins just go into hull planks.

The support brackets were then added, these are supplied parts already bent to shape, but they did require a slight tweak to rest against the hull nicely and holes drilled into the upper part so they could be pinned to the channel. after these were assembled they were given a coat of black paint on the underside and then fitted to the model.

I have also started work on the foremast. I have decide to use Longridge's method and make it in two sections, those being the mast and the mast top which is the squared section above the trestle trees. A hole will be drilled into the mast and a pin machined onto the mast top so they can be joined together. As Longridge says this makes the mast much easier to construct and also allows for any fine adjustments which may need to be made that would be impossible to do if the mast is made out of one piece of wood.

After the hole was drilled into the centre of the mast two flats were filed at the top to take the bibs which support the trestle trees.

Hi All,

Some more progress on the model. The channels have been given a coat of paint which can be seen in the first two photos. The reason for not painting right up to the posts is that the catheads and supports are yet to be fitted and I would only have to scrape it off again :).

The next job was to cut the rails for the carronade half round sections to be fitted. The kit supplied two pre-cut circles which were to be cut in half and fitted into the front and side rails.

A bit more work was done on the mast. the cheeks were fitted. These consisted of two pre-cut pieces that were glued to each side of the mast and then sanded to a taper at each end.

Finally the rubbing strake for the yard was glued on, this was a piece of 2 x 3mm walnut strip

That is all for this update I will post some more soon.

Hi All,

The half round sections have been fitted to the rails. As can be seen in the photos there is a slight gap between the top of the rail and the sections, these were filled with some 0.5 x 3mm planking and sanded back.

Hi All,

Some more progress on the fore deck. Two snatch blocks were made, these will mount on the port and starboard rails just behind the head post of the main rail, the catfalls will reeve through them and belay on the first timber head behind them.

The snatch blocks were made from 4 x 4mm walnut. I did not make a separate sheave just carved them to give the appearance of one. I think they turned out OK. You will also notice that the racks for the carronade balls has also been fitted.

I will post another update soon

Hi All,

The Catheads were the next project. They were made from 6 x 6mm walnut and as can be seen in the first two photos, etched timber pieces were glued to them, they were painted before being glued on. They also provided a template for the holes to be drilled for the rigging of the catfalls.

In the third picture you can see that the sheaves have been carved out with a small file and also that two cleats have been made, these will be fitted on the aft side of each cathead. They are to secure the standing part of the catfall rigging.

The next few photos show the catheads completed before being fitted including the pins in the end to add extra support when they are fitted.

I have also done some more work on the foremast. I have made up the boarding pike racks this was yet another modification to the kit they were made from 2mm ply. The lower rack was made form two parts one without holes and then glued together so the pikes would not fall through. :o

They were fairly simple to make and the top and bottom racks were clamped together for drilling so that the holes lined up. A slot was cut into the top rack so it would locate over the rubbing strake on the mast.

The boarding pikes will be made from bamboo kebab skewer cut down and drawn through my homemade draw plate to a size of 0.5mm, the spike will be made from flattened ends of brass nails :)
