Hi, everybody! It's nice to meet such a big community.

I have been attracted to sailing ships since a very long time, something that probably started when I found a set of pictures of some old ship models having a lot of details. Because of it, while reading Moby Dick as a kid, I was mostly interested in how the sailors were handling the ship and not so much by the story itself.

Later on, I found that there is an entire world of model ship building and I imagined it's something that I would like to do, but I postponed it many times, mostly due to lack of time.

Well, I finally decided to make the time and give it a try. I'm aware that I might discover that I don't actually like it so much, yet I think there is only one way to find out :D

I bought the 3-kit beginner's set of Model Shipways, planning to start with the basics and see how I can develop the building skills.

Welcome, you will find all the help and information you will want and need on this site, if you don't just put a question out there and people will answer.  Others build logs will be of great value and fill in all the holes in the instructions, better yet with pictures of the build.  I started with something more complex than the Model Shipways trio but stopped and built those 3.  I have never regrated that.

Welcome to Model Ship World Mikj.  Good move starting out with the Model Shipways 3-kit shipwright's modeling series.  This will serve you well for future model building projects.  There are a number of build logs on MSW for each of the models in this series.  You will find these helpful.  Feel free to start your own build log so you can get help or advice when you need it from other MSW members.

Ahoy, mate ... and welcome to MSW !  If you enjoyed the novel Moby Dick, you should read 'In the Heart of the Sea' - pasted below ... the REAL 'Moby Dick'.

In the Heart of the Sea
Book by Nathaniel Philbrick
In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick is a 2000 National Book Award-winning nonfiction book detailing the 1820 sinking of the whaleship Essex by a sperm whale, leading to a harrowing 90-day ordeal at sea for the survivors, who faced starvation, dehydration, and cannibalism, and it inspired the 2015 film of the same name. Philbrick uses newly discovered documents, including the cabin boy's account, to create a gripping narrative about human endurance, leadership, and the brutal realities of 19th-century whaling.  the true story of the Essex, which was rammed and sunk by a whale in the Pacific, forcing the crew into small boats to face the elements, with only a few surviving.

And if you want to SEE how the men handled a whaler at sea, watch the thrilling movie by the same title ... I was truly 'blown away' by it.
