Well, it looks like I'm late to the party again, as usual.  When I followed your latest Glory of the Seas build, I often wondered about the ship on the sea in the background.  Now I know.  I assume it is your first Glory of the Seas based on the Revell Cutty Sark hull.  Your multi media builds are interesting and I'll be following this one.

Wawona59

Actually,  this model was my first attempt at Glory……. but the model originally set in the water was the clipper Donald McKay

I decided to remodel the Cutty Sark modified to the Glory hull into the McKay and set aside the modified McKay hull.

The Glory model was further along in construction and all it needed was to be transformed into the McKay.  It sounds complicated, but it’s simply modifying an already modified model……….

Still lots to do…….heeheehee

The scale is 1/128

'Found an interesting image and I thought I'd bring it to your attention.  It shows the upper topsail let down ahead of the lower topsail (which, if at sea under growing winds, would block the breeze from the upper sail so lowered - and it could be taken in easier via bunt and leech lines).  'Looks like one of the the royals is similarly dispositioned.  This is yet another way to depict a model with sails (versus bare yards), in this case probably drying them in port - another actual scenario seen in this colorized photo.

Spent some time working the forward deck house and plotting out the forecastle deck and the house roof

The trick was getting it around the fore mast. No problem.  Just did a bit of measuring , cut out along the masts width and simply slid it in from the front and used the piece I removed and put it back.  Cut right along the deck strakes……no seams across any strakes.

The next bit of fun will be some hull modifications.    I need to fill in the concave portion of the hull up from the sheer line to the forecastle decking.   The CS hull if far too extreme to pass off as a fuller bowed Donald McKay.     So….. when the forecastle/main house decking is dry(from gluing). I will tackle the bow mods.
Another reason why I removed all the head gear.

Did a bit of work today……. beginning with the remodel of the bow and concave section up to the forecastle.   This had to be meticulously had created.   Blending the sharp below water angles to the more blunt concaved angle beneath the forecastle deck.

Here are some images of each side after I made the mod………a bow shot and a few others.

Thanks Pat.   The bow mods were probably the hardest....getting the hull curves...took some doing.

Now its time to lay the trim along the monkey rail and along the forecastle deck.  I'll begin the poop decking and all that's aft....as another project....tying them in amidships.

The decks and hull will also get a dusting of weathering to bring out the plank details.

Nope.  Next to the Lightning, the Donald McKay had a very unique deck layout.  Kinda a hybrid...between the full open weather deck of the Great Republic and an exposed lower mid deck of Lightning with a single catwalk for crew access to the Poop deck.  Donald McKay was always looking for ways to improve his clippers...not only in their hull designs, but in their overall functionality.

He was the first to employ the new Forbes double topsail design on  the Great Republic...the first to employ flush deck plate glass skylights, and the first to install a 5 HP steam donkey engine to assist in heavy lifting on a clipper.

There is truly very little on the Donald McKay...no photographs and just a few paintings that show very little of her deck furniture and fittings   This means, apart from Duncan Mclean's, write up of her....and Crothers general deck layout....I have my artistic license. Which under the current circumstances, means I am free from the burdensome scrutiny of the discerning eye.

As is my habit, I wanted to build a unique McKay clipper...unlike Lightning, which has been reproduced many times and even on these pages.  To my knowledge(I could be wrong), there are not many models of the clipper Donald McKay....and in her open ocean setting...she will be a delightful addition to my collection.

Sorry, there has been little activity in the shipyard as of late...but as summer comes in full strength.....summer projects and holidays are  numerous.

My study and research continues through....so hang in there.  I'm working out the method I will use for the iron stanchion/railings.  The easiest and fastes method will, of course, win out.....but, it still takes careful thought.

Ditto for me, and it didn't help that the commode in the en-suite  decided to stop working yesterday.  'Seems not just the fill mechanism ceased to work, but 11 years of continuous use by all hands corroded bolts, degraded washers and seals to the point of impending disaster if not completely replaced. In for a penny, in for a pound ... and the Admiral insisted that full functionality be restored at once.  So today turned into one of those 'dirty jobs' aboard ship - with a trip for components and hardware, a search for tools and a complete clean-out of the head.  Now if only I could 'restore' full functionality to my pleasure craft ...

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

Hi, this is a very impressive & fine work, congratulations. I was wondering on how are you able to obtain this light grey color on the deck, the wood color when is exposed to the sun and elements?

I use diluted black paint , then wipe it off quickly.    It gives the dark grey tone to the raw wood.  Your mileage may vary.

WOW. Your ocean looks amazing.  Glad to see you are back at it!

Great job on the figurehead!

Rick

Thanks Rick.  One of the last details I will add to the water, is the white caps and spray on top of the white.   It will add a significant 3D effect to the water at the hull, water interface.

Once I finish the fantail,  I’ll focus on the addition of the poop deck.

So much to do.  This is a near complete redo of the decks and deck furniture……..under the shrouded masts.
