Shipyard sid Posted May 25, 2013 Author #122 Posted May 25, 2013 Lawrence I only used two of the profiles, as both myself and Derek s (ocean clipper) found it hard to tell the difference between number two and three, so I used only number one and two. That said, again will the profile look to big on your ship. The size is 3mm x 2mm. And then how much will you need ?. I really cannot hazard a guess, but two lengths will definately not be enough even with you ship being a smaller scale, so don't order them until you are sure you will be ordering enough. I thought you got a taffrail with the model kit. DAVID

Shipyard sid Posted June 6, 2013 Author #124 Posted June 6, 2013 Greetings everybody So at last I have installed all the canons and completed all the hull work . I have now turned my attention to the masts and yards. So my first couple of photos show the last few photos of the hull sides. Honest!! Ok I have completed the three parts of the bowsprit ready to assemble, but waiting for a missing yard ring to be delivered. I have finished all three of the fore masts and they are ready to fit together once I get the cross tree and trestle tree assembly sorted, which is a bit fiddly. I have just started the main mast and will continue to finish all three parts next. I have found it surprisingly pretty easy to make the masts, and only used craft knives, David plane files and sanding. I cannot see were there is a necessity for lathe or improvised lathe work. I have only one mishap which was the breaking of my bowsprit. Yep one of those sticky out things, and there was no need for it to be fitted in place. Still I am really enjoying this part of the build. So here's a few photos, I am off to enjoy whittling ( is that how you spell it?) some pieces of dowel. Thanks for viewing and all your comments. I can go out in the garden and whittle away. Thanks for the advice for not installing the boomkins, but you forgot the bowsprit that was dry fitted and left on, and alas I smashed it. I shall be visiting yours and other builds looking for info on the rigging. Once again thanks a lot DAVID

All the mast parts are completed and ready for assembly, and the foremast has all it's fittings on. The bowsprit can be assembled when the time comes after I purchased the missing yard rings . I am now concentrating on the main mast which you will see in the photographs to follow. I have dropped a few clangers on my way, including making up wrong size blocks. Yes it's very good this rigging lark, but I do not believe derek s, ( ocean clipper) he said its a piece of cake, just a few reef knots and some clove hitches, and he is in charge of our build!!!!. Anyway I thought I better call in and show you some photos. Thanks for all your comments. He we go chaps photos galore no order whatsoever, DAVID

I am not (yet) a builder of the Victory (lack of time), but I plan to do it after finishing my Vasa project. Have already the JoTiKa manuals and plans and some books, so I follow the various build logs on this site with great interest. I would like to draw your attention to one point: In your post #129 from June 6th you show a series of images. I refer to the last one, where you show the bees and the port bee block of the bowsprit. I feel, you made a small mistake, but which will be fatal when you start rigging. In my opinion, you have to flip the bee block by 180 deg around the vertical axis and to shift it back to the after end of the bee. The starboard block (not to be seen on your images) has to be located at the front of the starboard bee and the port block at the back of the port bee, so that the sheaves in the blocks match the cuts in the bees. Moreover, the sheave must be located between the bowsprit and the outer cheek of the block. The JoTiKa explanations are very poor at that point. If you have the books of McKay, Longridge or Hackney you will find appropriate plans there. If not, I can send you Plans by e-mail (don’t want to violate any copyrights). Hope I am wrong. I will have a look and try to understand the mistake. It may take me a while to sort it (its an age thing) I am a beginner and didn't even know what a bee block was till I seen it on the drawing. Gil middletons log may also help I will report back to let you know if I understand. Hopefully I will be able to sort it, and have plenty of time, as the bowsprit will not be assembled for a while yet. Thanks for informing me of the mistake, there will proably be lots more. klaus Posted June 20, 2013 #134 Posted June 20, 2013 Hi David, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but glad be of some help. But I think the defect can easily be corrected. I would sand the faulty block down and fix a piece of wood of appropriate size behind it. Then drill a vertical hole through this block at the forward end of the cut in the bee for the lead of the stay to be rigged later. Done. Black paint will do the rest. Good Luck. Klaus

So now you are off to the upper deck, so good luck there, it should keep you entertained for a while. I have been working on the masts for a while now,and it is slow progress. At the moment I am fitting the last dozen or so of the blocks, and then I shall start whittling some dowel to make the yards which will also keep me busy for a good while. So as I have said before the photos are all a much of a muchness, so I have not posted for a while, but will do once all the blocks are on. Anyway here's a couple of photos of my present position, and one of the ship you once walked the decks of some years ago. It was taken a few months ago on a drab Sunday. It was quite a thrill for me. Putting down all the cannon balls hasn't been easy but I finally figured out how to "drop" them in place. I'm working on that now; then the 4 cleats and then I will begin the cannons themselves. I'll post some new pics on my log a bit later. Have a great week. Shipyard sid Posted July 24, 2013 Author #144 Posted July 24, 2013 Greetings all Well I have not reported in for a while because of redecoration of the house which included the shipyard, and now I have at last sorted out things and put them back to we're they do not belong and I am sorted . I have completed all the mast building, and have fitted the blocks to all but the mizzen mast. The platforms need the handrails fitting and then as far as I can see its just a matter of tidying things up and securing the masts. Then what??? I don't know, it's ask around time, as I am in no mans land. The last time I did any rigging was circa1978 when my late father was here to guide me. Mind I do believe he is about at times when I do a bit of bodging, I am sure I can hear tutting from over my shoulder. Anyway I have posted a few photos of the rigging of the blocks on the masts and a few of the figurehead. All being well the masts should have all the blocks plus the handrails fitted by the end of the week. Thanks to you all for viewing and all your comments which are always appreciated.
