Hi everyone

Since I have restarted my build of Le Mirage I thought it was time to resurect my build log from the ashes of the Great crash of 13! :)

This will be more of a summary rather than a detailed log. Lots of pictures, some words. You never know some of it might be interesting! :P

I started this build 3 years ago. Yes progress is slow but in my defence having two children in that time has somewhat limited build time... ;)

Comments/criticisms/etc gratefully received. Always good to get feedback of more experienced modellers.

Anyhoo enough of the intro. Hope you're sitting confortably. Popcorn ready?... Good.

A few box content pictures to get going

The box

This is my second build after the Billing Bluenose and I have to say I was very impressed with the quality of the materials. However the bulkhead slots needed some adjusting...

All the bulkheads in place

Unfortunately I didn't notice until way too late that the first one was higher up than it should have been. First mistake (and not the last! :D  )

The slots in the bulkheads are used to determine where the gun ports are.

although that didn't stop me forgetting some gun ports (told you there were more mistakes!)

Well that's the limit of 8 photos per post reached. Until the next post...

After that it was "just" a question of applying the first layer of planking

in progress

and voila. Finished! easy. :P

post-600-0-87521000-1397166520_thumb.jpg

However...something was amiss at the stern...

post-600-0-13734600-1397166674_thumb.jpg

so drastic measures were required...

post-600-0-18753800-1397166714_thumb.jpg

and the original booboo was fixed.

post-600-0-07634900-1397166778_thumb.jpg

At this point can I say to anyone who hesitates in making a fix. Dont! Once you've ripped up what was wrong, well, you can't leave it like that so might as well do it properly! :D

Seriously I was tempted not to fix it. But I'm glad I did.

And finally a couple of pics of the first planking filled and sanded.

Hopefully I wont keep you waiting for the next installment too long.

The next step was to plank the bow. Not wanting to follow Corel' instructions for reasons shown below...

post-600-0-11569700-1397336923_thumb.jpg

I tried to come up with something a bit more realistic and after getting some inspiration from the Ancre website, followed by some good tips from Danny this was the result

post-600-0-21395200-1397337034_thumb.jpg

which you will agree (well hopefully :) ) is better than Corel's suggestion!

Next step was to mark up the frames in preparation for the second planking

post-600-0-97558400-1397337138_thumb.jpg

followed by the stern planking

post-600-0-06294700-1397337333_thumb.jpg

And then the second planking started...

post-600-0-55523600-1397337446_thumb.jpg

and I'm sure you noticed on that last photo that I was still having issues with gun port location :D. Ho hum...

Only one more catch up post to follow and this log will have caught up with my progress.

Evening all

I decided to take the plunge and line the hull off according to Chuck Passaro's excellent tutorial. I didnt' want to use the wood supplied by Corel as I found it too light so decided to carry on with using walnut. I bought some 5mm wide planks and some 100mm wide sheets for the curved sections. All fine and well until I got both and realised the two didnt seem to be the same wood...  or more specifically the 5mm strips did not look like walnut

So ordered some more from a different source and got the same stuff... double  . Given that my finances were (are... :D ) not illimited I decided to cut the 5mm planks from the 100mm sheets. Downside to that is that it takes a loooooong time to do the second planking. Hopefully it will be worth it.

First step was to break the hull down into sections:

post-600-0-25078600-1398203871_thumb.jpg

and finally

post-600-0-82716600-1398203893_thumb.jpg

And so the second planking of the hull started. As a picture is worth a thousand words...

post-600-0-14328000-1398203988_thumb.jpg

post-600-0-76515800-1398204048_thumb.jpg

and finally again

post-600-0-40035100-1398204064_thumb.jpg

And that brings me up to date. I'm not going to be posting updates quickly from now on since I only have time to do one planking strip a week on average and I have about 35 strips left :D. I do like doing planking but I have to admit I'll be glad when it's over :D

I'll try and post some photos when I complete a section.

Thanks for looking

Some great work and some fabulous planking Nick B) Spiling the planks and laying in a contemporary model style will always look the nicest.Yes it is a lot of work cutting the planks out but the results are well worth it.I found the hardest bit to get to look right was the bow end of the garboard plank. You have to stand the model right way up and looking from the horizontal, try to get the end so it looks like it flows in a sweeping curve from the side. This dictates the radius you cut on the end.It took a couple of goes on Caroline to get this to look right.

Kind Regards

Now, this is a nice looking ship, Nick, and I can tell you are off to make a nice build out of it.

Your planking jobs looks very clean and even. Congratulations!

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

I knew it was a good idea not to post any close-ups :D

Seriously it's nice to get feedback. Thanks Nigel for the heads up on garboard plank. I have found that turning the ship the right way up to check planking does help. What looks straight upside down isn't necessarily!!

Nick,

You can make close-up pictures !

Nothing wrong with it !!!!!!

That looks great that walnut .

Go on like this and your Le Mirage will end up in a museum  :D  :D

Thanks Sjors and Michael for the comments although I'm not so sure about the museum one though :D

Interestingly enough Corel used to supply walnut for the second layer of planking. Says so in the instructions (still) and you can see that on the photo on the box (start of the log). Wonder why they changed to a lighter wood.

Hi Nick, very nice work on your Le Mirage :)  I am about to start the Corel Unicorn, and actually spent last evening mapping out how to modify the one-piece keel piece to add the stern post, keel, false keel, and various components of the stem.  Your approach is exactly what I'm planning to do and it's nice to see it executed in a beautiful way :)

One thing I'd note - in my limited research, it looks like the scarph joints for the keel run a bit differently - essentially run vertically, so you don't really see the long joint.  I could be wrong though.

I'm subscribing to your log and look forward to your progress!

Mike

Hi Sjors

Haha yes you can imagine it. "What no more walnut. Oh well this will do..." :)

Thanks for your feedback Mike. Interesting comments about the scarph joints. I took my inspiration from drawings I saw on the Ancre website but have to admit I didn't really research that area (or any...) properly. Maybe just two different ways of doing them I guess?

Excellent planking work Nick B)  B) It is no mean feat getting the planking to conform to contemporary style. Are you cutting the planks from sheet or edge bending normal strip?

Thanks to WackoWolf, maggsl_01 and Aussie048 for the likes.

Thanks Nigel and Sjors for the comments.

Nigel I am cutting the planks from sheet with a X-acto knife (haven't got space or money for power tools...yet...hopefully :) ) It's not too bad but I think I could benefit from getting a ship's curve for the curved sections. I'm finding it quite difficult to get nice smooth curves.

and then the fiddly stuff  :P  :P

You mean to tell me this is the easy bit??!?! :P:D

I think even if you did have a scroll saw Nick, the walnut might be prone to breakage with those curves.Even with pearwood on caroline I had the odd few planks relegated to recycling due to breakage.Yes a set of French/ships curves is on my list.I have one of those flexy curves but could I find it  It will turn up when I have no immediate need for it

Small update. Another planking section complete. Getting there despite the fact this build sometimes makes me feel like a slow snail at the bottom of Mount Everest... :)  Looking up... :D

Anyhoo enough terrible jokes. Here are a couple of progress pictures:

Nigel a belated thanks for the comment. Yes walnut can be brittle although the stuff I'm using now is far better than what I had when I planked the keel. Now that was horrible stuff.

Thanks for looking
