Been doing the coppering of the hull this weekend, this took a lot longer than I anticipated, due to planning and I still have the capping / edges to do to complete, and yes I did tear off a handrail which was inevitable really. One tip I can give, buy the copper tape but buy the dearest one you can find. WHY, really, they are dearer for a reason, quality. The edges are cut clean and straight which we need when applying rivit detail. Trust me on this, I got the cheaper one followed by the dearer, when I say dear, there only £5.00 or ($7.56) US dollars.

I did ponder this coppering as I'm leaving her natural.

I have had a niggle about the steps though and the fact they step, ok but too much. The kit does not take into consideration the wales and the steps are of different depths, also they don't reach the waterline / copper I am currently rectify this and have just done the bottom rungs. Oh I've received my black, yes BLACK, rigging, thanks to Caldercraft.

Great work on the steps Paul, but you might like to shamper them a bit, that is give them a bit of a curve on the sides.

Rounded they were on the ends.

Hope you do not mind a picture.

Love the build.

Despite still removing all the steps down the hull sides and giving them a bit of a little more accurate appearance, I am also adding the hull trims, she has spiral turning on for decorative purposes but the kit doesn't replicate these. The woods not the same shade but wood is wood and it comes as it comes, that said those painting her would not have an issue, just a little more accurate ship.

Your craftsmanship is stunning, well done!

I have ordered this kit as well just waiting on it being delivered. Will be painting her in trafalger colours but will be referencing to your build.

Nice work :)

You will like the kit, ok I have moaned here and there about certain things regards plans / inacurate areas but there easy to rectify. The wood is top quality and wait until you see her in her natural state, you may not want to paint her. I intended to have her painted but just love the wood, I couldnt. That said, painting her would have made life a lot easier in respect of filla here and there. Enjoy the build, any problems always ask, there are very few Constructo Victorys on here so I have loaded many pictures and still have a lot more.

Thanks for the comment

Thanks. She arrived today, and have to say from what I have seen so far I agree with you. Seems nicely packaged together, dry and upon quick examination, zero warpage.

Just the Hermione to finish first... *sigh*

Look forward to seeing some more progress on yours :)

I haven't posted anything for a while but look what I have upgraded to, ok, ok, we can clamp drills in vices and turn them using sandpaper but look at modelling heaven in the shape of a lathe, really its that good. I love this, it's ideal for mast and I had to have a play as soon as it landed at my door, shortly after, mast ready for fittings. Beware though I bought the red one first, although too small really its chuck was off centre causing all turnings to look like a crankshaft. As you can see this is a metal lathe rather than wood. Bottom pictures. I'm sure I was unlucky but Chinese might look the same as the otiginal Unimat 1 but there really not The same quality.

Hello paul

It looks like you have had no probs at all. So I am now contemplating buying one. What I was concerned with was the max distance from the chuck to the back stop, or what is the max length of dowel you can turn. Yep you've got it cracked, well done Paul. Regards DAVID

Chuck to back stop 250mm which is adequate for us, also the job goes through the back of the chuck and out the side of the lathe. 10mm Max through the back which again is adequate. http://www.conrad-electronic.co.uk. these guys are the right price and service is great, the chuck is an extra cost, although the kit does come with collets. The self centering Chuck makes life really easy. My best buy for a long time.

Fitted the trims around the egde, the wood behaved itself, all the inner trims need to be fitted, although I must get back to the hull soon and catch up to this point, just I find the masts an interesting part of the build. Not to mention I get to play with the lathe.

I do find the laser cut (Sapelly) parts are a nightmare though, they have a black soot on them from the laser process which has to be cleaned off and it gets everywhere.

This is the carpet that resides beneath my feet as I build my model, probably the worst blend of wood colours I could have, I dont exaggerate when I say I've lost easily an hour looking for tiny parts I've prepped to fit. Well my solution, maybe others, get a hoover preferably Henry type ( best) and put a breathable thin cloth over the entrance to the hoover, make a well in the cloth and fasten the hose back on, hoover away and bingo you will find the part, without ( and we all have) cutting a full bag open.

Hope this helps

All three lower masts complete, I have noticed that the fores on the plans run perpendicular to the masts but on the real ship these run perpendicular to the decks, the latter makes sence as crew stand on these. See plan of the kit and the real ship. If I was to make the mast as per plans all nice and straight with the fores level, when the time comes to fit them to the hull / deck the fores would have tilted up, as the mast have a lean back when fitted.

My solution was considerably more drastic.  I ripped out the carpet and put in a maple hardwood floor.  :)

Your solution is magnitudes cheaper!

As per usual you are doing a wonderful job, the lathe certainly makes a difference. I have cut 140 frame pieces for the gun ports, attached 60. the only problem is mum has gone into nursing home so not getting much time as we have got to clear out her house and sell it to pay for her care.

Keep up the good work I keep down loading the pictures. I will get round to them one day,but they are really helpful
