The work continues with decoration in the main cabin and preparation the hull for decoration/sculpting.
There is added first decorative strip made of modeling clay and wooden hems.

Now the hull is ready for sculpting and I have to say, that I am looking forward to this phase from the beginning of the build. That is the main reason, why I have choosen Royal Caroline.

The whole blue area on the hull will be decorated with many gilded sculptures and ornaments:

I have just begun to work on the decoration, shape the strips from modeling clay (so far only for the port) and also improve some details at the model to reach more authentic look of the original. To convert 2D images into 3D model decorations and sculptures I will proceed according to various materials and pics, for example according to the Dutch yacht Utrecht:

At the stern I improved edges of decorative columns, now they are gilded, which should be more authentic with the decoration on the royal yacht:

Technology how to make these moldings from modeling clay

Preparation - first I make a thin roller. The best tool for this job is a finger and smooth paper, it is necessary to roll modeling clay very gently .... Thickness of this roller is approximately 1.5 mm for these ornaments.

 

 

Carefully transfer onto the wax paper, where the roller remains stick.

 

Immediately it starts making patterns, I use various tools (tweezers, pens, micro pencil ets.), until the modeling clay is soft and shapeable.

 

The edges should be slightly flattened - flat surface of tweezers usually helps:

 

 

And further pattern, this time using the tip of pencil:

 

Finished, now the decorations go to the oven...

 

It is very important to keep tools as cool as possible, otherwise the modeling clay is sticky to them. I let the tools soaked in ice water all the time.

I finished gilded moldings on the starboard and bow and now I am going to make decoration beside the windows.

Everything is assembled from thin rollers. The modeling clay was rolled again by my finger on a smooth paper.

I used tweezers to shape bottom side of the ornament. After that the modeling clay was gently transferred onto wax paper where I continued to shape the ornament.

I shaped top of the ornament again using the tweezers and prepared another roller - much thinner than the original. I carefully glued it into place with tweezers and remove overlaps. Bonding areas were smoothed by a tip of pen.

On all these ornaments are added tiny beads, which I shaped between my fingers (size of the beads is from 0.5 to 1.5 mm). Using tweezers I placed them onto ornament and slightly improved their shape.

All 12 ornaments completed and ready for baking:

After baking the ornaments were gilded, and later placed into model and improved by patina.

Doris I have run out of ways to say incredible, fantastic, etc. I am learning so much from your tutorials on the sculpting. I do have a question regarding your gilding.  Is the gilding using gold leaf or a high quality gold paint? or something else? It look like the paper that you are building the scupltures on is the backing paper for the foils am i correct?, if so then the backing paper of something like carpet tape would also work.

Hello Michael, thank you very much for your comment.

You are right - the paper, where the sculptures are shaped, comes from backing of self-adhesive foils. It is something like a wax paper and the clay do not stick to this material. And about painting - I use gold enamel Testors 1744E or gold acrylic spray:

I have started to make decoration for a quarter gallery; two angels and an eagle are ready for baking....

Here is the decoration for left quarter gallery almost finished. I was glad that everything fits accurately.

Today I am bringing a tutorial how to make various sculptures, this time it is a fish, which will be placed in front of the quarter gallery on port.

At the beginning I prepare the material/clay, it must have the necessary softness, which is achieved by molding in the hand or between fingers. Create a basic shape for the decoration with a slight overlap.
 

Use appropriate tools to shape the clay, I use tweezers, tip of pen or micro pencil, knife and also my fingers...

Various details are often added from smaller pieces of clay, which are shaped separately.

It is no problem to remove the overlaps using scalpel or sharp edge or tip of tweezers. After that the repaired area is smoothed.

She don't say to much.

This is an incredible,amazing and wonderful build.

It's hard to believe that this is card.

When I was young ( few years ago) I can make a paper plane and that's it.

I didn't know that there was also a possibility to make ships from card.

A specially the ships you are creating.

Are you for sure you are from this planet????
