Ray got a reaction from Tim Curtis in HMS Diana 1794 by Ray - FINISHED - Caldercraft - A 38 gun Heavy Frigate
The main and mizzen top masts are now in place, and have all their shrouds and ratlines added, phew, I am glad they are all finished and that I split it up this way, as it did make the ratlines a lot less tedious to tie,I will now most likely add as much of the standing rigging that I can before fitting the tagallants masts.
I have also included some photos of Diana with Pegasus and The lady Nelson.
Firstly a lower fold down table I used to bring the rigging to a better level to work at
Main and mizzen masts
Completed ratlines
Some photos of Diana with Pegasus And some with The Lady Nelson as well

Hi all this is where I am now still a lot of little things to add so probably wont be posting any more on this for a while as the bits I need to do wont really show up much and would just be boreing, but dont worry I will still be working on it.
Will have to find someone to donate it to then as its is too big to stay here.

Ray - thanks very much for the photos, very helpful, looks like you didn't use the triangular filler pieces at the stern and didn't cause you any issues. Mine are glued solidly on so will need to proceed with these. Hopefully I'll get some time tonight to look at this again.
Carl - thanks, I'll check it out.

Hi Jason
I have added some photos of my Diana`s stern from point you are up to now, then forward to where the stern is nearly completed, there are a lot more steps from where you are now to that point, but part you are most apprehensive over is covered up by the stern galleries and cabin.
I hope these photos help, I also found it difficult to get my head around this stern but I think it turned out OK.
First planking sanded and filled
second planking going on
all on and filled

The Stern& Quarter Galleries being built at same time as coppering hull.
This proved to be quite tricky to build and even more so as I am going with the low quarterdeck sides. I lined up the transom so that the rail across the top of the stern gallery will line up and be the same height as the quarter deck sides, when they have the rail caps on them, this has meant the side windows are a bit to high by about 5mm and its to late to change the height, so I will have to live with it, I added a extra 3mm piece under the windows which brings the whole gallery down so it finishes in about the right place. Could I have tried to removed it all and lowered it, it is so well glued up it would have been a nightmare to do and could have ruined the whole stern, the good thing is the top stern gallery rail and the quarterdeck rail will line up and look right. Once the quarter galleries were made up the stern gallery was done and the rail across the top added a length of 1x4mm walnut was well soaked and then bent into shape and fixed whilst very damp with cyno. Back to a bit more coppering as I mentioned before I have been building this up whilst coppering.

Copper plating the hull.
Firstly I decided to go with the copper plates supplied with the kit although I much preferred the look of the ones used on Pegasus, the cost would have been over £100 to update them too much for me. I started from the edge of the keel and fixed a row of tiles left over from Pegasus on the edge, I then came down 3 Rows before running a gore line, I did it by eye and feel and looking back at Pegasus to get the same sort of effect, as there does not seem to be a definitive way of doing this. One advantage I have found with these plates are they fix very well, maybe it is the dimples on the fixing side holding the cyno better than a plain flat surface, they also cut well and dress down fairly easily with a file or sanding wheel, when you need to make up the triangular stealers.

The second planking is completed sanded, filled, and sanded again and lastly finished off with wire wool, I have also lined the gun ports with lids, all the gun ports have been painted. One thing I did do was to add a 1mm strip to the bottom of the keel as to my eyes the distance between the planking and the keel bottom looked to narrow.

Thanks for the comments guysMort
I hope one of these photos show the stem planking you would like to see.
The inner wall of the gun deck has now been fitted, I painted the first three planks just to help keep a nice line to where it joins the waterway, later I will sand down and repaint the whole inner wall.
I have also started to dry fit the top ply deck this needed some of the slots adjusting and at the moment it is just clamped and taped down, as the next job is to fit the transom parts and I think having the deck in place will help to align the parts. You can also now see how little of the gun deck can actually been seen.

Top mast was fitted to the fore mast next, and the shrouds and ratlines have been added.
One tip I do have, which I seem to have omitted to mention in my earlier posts on the shrouds and ratlines, is that, most kit manufacturers instructions for ratlines, recommend using .25mm, or which ever size natural thread and then stain it black (a very messy option in my opinion) there reasoning’s being that black thread is to stiff to use well Caldercraft thread is quite stiff, but I always use Amiti which is no stiffer than natural colour thread.
The main and mizzen next.

Stergois The lower masts were fixed into the hull with fast drying PVA which gives some wiggle room time and care was taken to ensure they were at 90 deg across the deck.
