ChrisLBren got a reaction from mtaylor in Milled Boxwood Sheets in USA
Hey Chuck - as a fellow small business owner - not sure if you want to open this can of worms - it’s seems like there may be more downside than upside with your time and investment

I added the stern post today. I must say that it felt really good. That closes out this second chapter and really finishes off the hull to the point where I feel I actually accomplished something. Its a good feeling. I am sure you guys will feel the same.
I also forgot to post a comparison picture before I added the stern post. But here it goes anyway. I always think its interesting to see the progress on this new larger version against my smaller 3/16" scale version. Here are two pictures. My camera is much better now. The old picture is dated 2011. 8 years ago or almost 9 years. It doesnt feel that long. I like the yellow cedar version better than the boxwood version.

Beautiful job on the planking ! I agree with you - the less is more approach works very well - heck I almost decided not to simulate caulking but have changed my mind there. No treenails for sure. Hopefully Ill be back in the shop this weekend after many honey dos to get the house ready for winter - which is coming early here in the Midwest. Kudos to a brilliantly executed model so far !!!

Try FED EX - Ive had this issue before - they seem to have the only machines to handle this without "fit to size"

Thanks for the likes and comment.
Update time. I did a lot of reading of other logs (not many out there) and tried several different approaches. The pics below show the method and result for the bow. I'm heading towards an "extra" half-frame on each side between the next 3 full frames. This is to give me some extra "meat" for planking and also to assist in frame part above the main deck. I have to remove several of them for gun ports and put them in a different spot. Testing and thinking will continue as start filling in the lower hull with balsa.
Here's photos.... The last few show a dummy bowspit in place as I had to account for angles, diameter, etc. BTW, the bowspit is square to the bulkhead but looks off center due to the angle of the photos.

Progress continues,
The former has been cut out and the rabbet strip attached.
Next is to cut out and assemble the stem knee assembly and keel.
Here are the parts laid out on swiss pear.
Here is the stem knee cut out and ready for fitting all of the pieces together.
The fun is just beginning!!!!!

Almost forgot to mention....at this stage you can remove the brackets on your baseboard. They did their job. You will need t make a work cradle. To do this, use the templates for the bulkheads which have the curve and shape needed. I will use three pairs just like the brackets. They will be positioned where the brackets were. You will see those on the next update.

Enough fiddling about and making stupid mistakes.... I took the ship off the build board for fairing and doing repairs due to the keel warping and bending the stern end (about 7 bulkheads in length). The false keel was ok and straightened out on it's own in couple of hours. Originally it was one long strip of boxwood that I cur from piece that was the right thickness, 5" wide and longer than what I needed. I still have it, maybe I can use it where some wooden beam needs to be bent Hopefully this will be the last d*** major rework.
The unplanked hull (see pics is now on an old display base I had handy and in preparation for fairing. I feel that fairing should be done before anything else. So digging out the sand paper and sanding sticks.

Just letting you guys know that I have been steadily making progress. Planking is not something that can be rushed. No matter how well you make all of the other fittings and parts on a model, if your planking is bad that is all anyone will ever notice. So go slow and keep it clean and neat with tight joints.
If you see yourself going off your lining off tick marks with a strake, no need to worry. Then you should correct it with the next strake or two in order to get back on your marks. Keep flipping the hull "right-side-up".....as you should check your run of planks every strake or two and make adjustments when needed. Below you can see the tapered planks along the tuck and the transition of the planks onto the stern post rabbet. Note the plank in the corner where the ends transition from the counter to along the rabbet strip. The cedar is working out nicely and I think the color looks good on a model this size. You guys can of course judge for yourselves but if you are building a frigate or other larger subject, this is a good choice. Its a bit soft bu once you get accustomed to using it, it really looks good. I have only used a bit of wipe on poly on the planking.
I have completed two belts on the port side and am finishing of the second belt on the starboard. Once completed I will reverse direction and start planking from the keel ....upward in order to finish up the hull planking. You can see my planks entering the stem rabbet below.
Questions and comments are always welcome from the group.

I can't wait to start ripping wood. You know it's been killing me these last two months having to wait
to get started and only being able to follow along watching everyone else make so much progress!

Work is now completed on the second belt. Not much to say other than more of the same. Just some cleanup sanding and as always I try to avoid sanding too much of the last few installed strakes. The knee is getting a bit grungy due to excessive handling, though not a problem to clean up later.

Stays have been completed and Bowsprit installed, only the Jib, Jib Halliard, Foresail Halliard and Flag Halliard left to rig.
You can see I have left all the stays loose for the moment until I’m ready to do the final tensioning.
I ran out of 0.025 light brown rope due to mistakes and had to order more from Chuck, hopefully complete this great little project in a few weeks after vacation.

Hi Mark,
Congrats on your new build ! She's always been one of my favorite subjects. My friend Keith built this ship in your scale and drafted her in POF.
