ChrisLBren got a reaction from Ainars Apalais in USF Confederacy by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - 3/16 Scale
Thanks Michael and Mark - both of those questions will be answered soon. Im a big fan of photographing your model - thats how I noticed a molding off the quarter gallery in the second shot crooked - its fixed. I really have issues with CA and won't use it on future builds unless absolutely necessary. I may have a second go at those anchor bands this weekend - they are an eyesore to me - cutting them thinner would make a big difference and not an issue to re rig them to the knightsheads.

Almost there....
This photo shows the contents of the kit. I am just finalizing a few more things. The kit is made from all cherry with some additional boxwood accents. You get the resin casting set minus the seven items you will be carving. But the seven items will be available later as an option for those that dont want to carve them. I hope everyone at least tries. You get two sheets of plans and printed friezes for the panels and sweeps. The pedestals and sweep racks are also included. There will be no printed instructions in the box to keep costs down but the full set will be available as a download on my site as usual. There are 25 laser cut sheets of cherry and boxwood that range in size and thickness. The planks are pre-spiled and laser cut for you. The real fragile stuff is carefully packaged in bags rather than being left in the laser cut sheets like the etched panels that are inboard. They are boxwood and very fragile.
This kit contains everything you need to build it just like I have straight out of the box including pre-printed flags on tissue paper. It is a fully framed model with floors and toptimbers just like the contemporary models and will retail for $235. It will be available real soon and just in time for Christmas.
Let me know if you have any questions.

ChrisLBren got a reaction from Blackreed in USF Confederacy by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - 3/16 Scale
Thanks for the likes and comments everyone....
After almost 8 years of construction this should be my last update before finished pictures. The first shot shows the hull with the dummy masts temporarily placed. They still need gammoning and cleats. The black board will be her display base - Im waiting for the pedestals Im having machined for me here locally.
The second shot shows the bowsprit - which still needs to be mounted, rigged and small parts added.
The third shot are the toilets - for some reason the ones by the roundhouse proved very tricky and took me the better part of a week to get right - there are many angles here to take into account.
And finally the last parts - the anchors in very rough shape, the knightsheads and the boomkins which still need to be shaped. I also am making some repairs to the rudder.

Put a pin in this one - Confederacy is completed ! I wrapped it up earlier this week than I thought this evening - here are the latest photos. I think the area I want to improve the most with the next build is metal work - my anchor bands look a bit chunky. Johann is an inspiration in that area. But overall very satisfied with the build and the enjoyment it gave me over the last 8 years. Thanks again for all of the support/encouragement and comments. And thank you Chuck for second to none plans and guidance with this build.

ChrisLBren got a reaction from Tigersteve in USF Confederacy by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - 3/16 Scale
Appreciate the comments gang ! I promise I'm not trying to tease about the photos....
I am toying with the idea of simply placing the anchors on the display base near the bow. With them lashed to the hull it sort of breaks up the beautiful lines of the vessel (the same reason I decided against building ships boats for this one - I think if she was masted would probably be a different story). Ill take photos both ways and get some feedback from you guys.

ChrisLBren reacted to Rustyj in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Rustyj - FINISHED - 1:48 Scale
Hi all,
I've completed the Bowsprit Guys. The thimbles are made from Albion Alloys thin walled brass tubing, 1.6mm.
The guys are .025" rope served with #100 thread.
As you can tell photography is not my strong suit. Need to work on it more!
Next up is setting the mast and hanging the boom and gaff.

Bulkhead centers were removed with the needle file shown below. The process went smoothly. Inboard fairing is moving along. We're just about 1/16" thickness all around. I'd like to get it closer to 1/32". I'm back and forth between sandpaper and my rotary tool with a sanding disk attachment.

After almost 8 years of construction, a marriage and birth of twins - she is mounted on pedestals and awaits the anchors. It was kind of a surreal moment this AM - by far the longest/most satisfying build I've ever completed. I should have the finished photos posted by next weekend.

All,
Here is the completed build, sans diorama for now. I'm now in the middle of cleaning out the workspace, ordering new drill bits (and other tools) and getting ready to sink my teeth into building the Syren. I think I am ready for a ship, haven gotten the plane out of my system.

Thanks for the advice Gaetan - I used an Exacto #11 for all of these carvings on the quarter galleries - you are a master - ill give your blades a try on the next build which will have much less carving than this one.

ChrisLBren reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in 74-gun ship by Gaetan Bordeleau - 1:24
Thank you Deperdussin1910,
A lot of strengths are involved in this puzzle. It is difficult to well balanced everything. The keel was supposed to be straight but it was not. The first method to unglue some spacers between frames was to try to realign the keel with 2 by 4. It did unglue some and helped to realign. I will let everything stabilize and probably unglue some others. We also see how the planking fit on the keel. Limber holes has been traced lower than on drawings and cut.

ChrisLBren reacted to ken3335 in Royal William by ken3335 - FINISHED - Euromodel - Scale 1:72
Hello, Welcome aboard Archie and thanks for your thumbs up.
Not much to show yet as I'm just making up the blocks and dead eyes for the bowsprit so I thought I'd show you my small secondary work table.
I couldn't fit models on my bench and use it for a work area at the same time so I made this table up from an old office chair that I found at the tip. I took the seat off and replaced it with a 20mm piece of MDF, it's suitably heavy and stable but unlike a fixed table I can spin it around like a turntable and raise or lower it, it's especially useful for when rigging, oh and it didn't cost anything.

ChrisLBren reacted to SJSoane in HMS Bellona 1760 by SJSoane - Scale 1:64 - English 74-gun - as designed
Hi everyone,
Moving and retiring at the same time took longer, and was more stressful, than I expected. The retiring is great, the moving not so much fun.
My new shop is smaller than the previous one, so I had to organize tools as efficiently as possible. Most of the major ones are now on the wall, and I have knee space at last at the power tools.
Here are a couple of images. I hope to get back to the Bellona soon!
Best wishes,
Mark

ChrisLBren reacted to Trussben in HMS Pegasus 1776 by Trussben - 1:48 - Swan-class sloop based on TFFM
Hi,
So work on Pegasus we be starting again now I have humidity back to normal control, and summer projects put back to bed.
Old counter framing was broken on last house move so it has to be remade.
First order of business was to make a jig to attach to my gantry for the correct alignment and position of new side counter timbers, made out of some poplar and sized so top corners are the correct height from the keel to toptimber level, and width to correspond for correct gap 12'3" ( 3 1/16" full size ).
New side counter timbers were shaped out of 15" thick stock as per TFFM, glued into correct position on wing transom, and pinned through with 20ga copper wire / 5 min epoxy for strength.
Distance between side counter timbers at the upper counter knuckle was checked as well, pretty confident these are in the correct place.
Now to start on the filling timbers and QB light port.
