FatFingers reacted to cog in Spitfire Mk IXc - FINISHED - by cog - Eduard - 1/72 - PE & Plastic
Thank you all for all the likes and comments during the build it has been greatly appreciated!
Now for the last leg ... Weathered, afther that, sprayed a layer of satin varnish, unfortunately it looks more like matt, added some last clear parts ...
Nearly forgot: The kit is meant to be built with a stationary prop, which I changed to a rotating version
Next one ... finish the Bf 109G-6 in Swiss colours

FatFingers reacted to Sceatha in Byblos Ship by Sceatha - FINISHED - 25th century BC
So, three days of 12 hour building sprints I have the hull almost completed.
Unfortunately, I did something stupid. Since this is my first time recording a build log, I forgot in my building fervor to take step by step photographs of the interior lacing. Luckily, I have decided to leave part of the deck uncovered so the interior structure is still visible.
Below is a general plan of the interior structure. This is mainly based on Khufu's Solar Boat, a more or less contemporary ship to the one I am building, but designed for river use.
So here is the work on the interior, with battens covering the plants joints and laced from side to side. Since the thickness of the planks does not allow for the V shaped channels to be dug into the wood, without showing on the outside, the lacing had to be "faked". The lacing threads go through channels dug into the deck beams at the sheer:
The ship has no keel and no typical frames. There is a number of relatively flimsy false frames, but their sole use seems to be to distribute the pressure of the stanchion that hold up the long plank that supports the deck beams at their center:
Decking is also almost done. Based on the decking of the Khufu ship, the Egyptian did not shy from beveling the planks to sharp points, despite the loss in structural integrity. Supposedly their need to preserve as much of the rare wood's original length was greater.

FatFingers got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in Carving tools, books and carving woods discussion
Linden, Lime and Basswood are members of the same tree species, Tilia. They were the favorite wood for carving used by Grinling Gibbons who's work, though on a larger scale, was breathtaking. See http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O59271/carving-gibbons-grinling/
for example.

The dimensions of the carvings made a modification of the window openings
and gunports are absolutely necessary.
My mistake in the frame construction or the finished size of the carvings,
no matterit müsst be changed.

FatFingers reacted to abufletcher in DKM 37mm Flak Cannon on M42 Mount 1:5 Scale
A friend is planning to build a 1/5 scale Schnellboot S200 (22 feet)...and he needs someone to build the deck guns (i.e. cannons). A month or so ago, I volunteered to make a 1/3.3 scale Russian ShKas machine gun for a Polikarpov Po2 biplane model he's building. He was so pleased with it, that he asked me to build the guns for his S200. He may have found a source for 3D printed 20mm cannons at 1/5 scale, so my task (thankfully) has been "reduced" to the one 37mm cannon. The cannon itself shouldn't be too much work. But, man, that mount will be a serious scale mountain to climb!
I've started to collect information, photos, etc. and enlarged some sketches to 1/5 scale to get my mind around the project. With these limited resources in hand, I can start brainstorming about how to divide the build and what materials might be used. I'm strictly a "low tech" builder. No CAD, no CNC, no 3D printing (though I have just recently started playing around with Fusion 360). Just my hands and some pretty ordinary workshop tools. My modeling interests thus far have been restricted to WWI RC aircraft and I've never built a ship model. But then this isn't a boat either...just another "machine" which I've done before, like the dummy Benz BzIII engine (over 300 hand-made parts) for my 1/6 scale Albatros CI.

FatFingers reacted to abufletcher in DKM 37mm Flak Cannon on M42 Mount 1:5 Scale
The build of the engine is part of a very long running build (over 400 pages) on RCSB (Radio Control Scale Builder) of a 1:6 scale Albatros CI. It started with constructing a master cylinder, then making a 2-part silicone mold in order to resin cast six of them. After that it was just "hanging on all the decorations."

FatFingers reacted to Richard Braithwaite in Trireme Olympias by Richard Braithwaite
Several years ago (quite a few in fact...) I started building a 1:24 scale model of a reconstruction of an Athenian Trireme. The model is based on drawings produced by John Coats for building the full size reconstruction ("Olympias"). A number of trials were conducted with the ship in the 1980's, which have been published in a number of sources by the Trireme Trust. Well worth looking up. A fascinating example of experimental archaeology.
I did have a blog running to record the model build (on this site I think?) but have not updated for a long time and I think it is no longer there. I have now reduced my working hours which has given me more time to progress the model over the last few months, so I thought it would be worth restarting the blog.
I have just completed the framing for the canopy.

OK,
I finished the Speedy prototype model half an hour ago, and have taken some quick pics. Now I have a lot of PC based work to do, box artwork, plans, instructions and parts list.
I had the Alert stern patterns re-designed and re-cut, a pic of one set is included here, these will be included in all new kits.

Received the email shown below last week, should be the definitive kit.
Hi Reg,
thanks for your inquiry. At the moment all I can say is that we have start
this work but, since its dimension, it will takes a lot of time.
I hope to have this new kit in 2021 splitted in 3 or 4 kits because of the
high price.
We will keep all modelers informed.
Best Regards
Emilio Marletti
