    Clare, This is really looking good. Looking at the pics in post 65, if you told me that was cardboard not wood, I would be hard pressed to believe, Well done!!

    Hmmm. My book said "6:0,25:0,5". The commas threw me. I agree that ratios with less than 1 are strange. The 24:1:2 makes more sense. Thanks.

    Clare, Awhile back you mentioned Ages of Sail was working on being distributor for Woody Joe models. Is that still in the works?

    Clare, I am looking at the painting and have some questions. After the first wash of #03 I have a wash of 15/29/30 (yellow/brown/black) which is supposed to be the basic wood, followed by a second wash of 15/29/30 in different proportions that are meant to simulate wood grain. First ratios are 6:25:5 while the second are 6:1:1. This doesn't make sense to me. The first set of ratios would seem to make a darker color. Am I wrong or did I get the ratios wrong?

    I have some PIGMA Micron markers. I will experiment with a medium brown and a pencil.

    That paint job really looks good. The nails are looking a lot better too. Now that I know what I am looking at, it probably makes a diff. I plan on doing nails in pencil before I give it the old #3. Hopefully they will be a bit more subdued.

    Clare, 2 x number 3 (already misplaced 1 😕) . 1 each #01, 06, 08, 15, 29 and 30.

    Bob, One reason I liked the Philly is because of the VERY simple rigging plan. Everybody is commenting on your detail. One are I specifically like is the detail of the bolts and other hardware. I don't recall that being in the kit. Where did you get those? Oh no! Cat knocked over the coffee pot. Slim with cutlass is unhappy.

    Chris, Embrasure, yes, thanks. Clare, The second coat is thinned as well, correct? I agree, the kit supplied red is far too bright. I will either do as you have done, or tap into my artist acrylics and make a barn red. 🐄

    Slim appears real intent on guarding that cookstove. I would be concerned if I was the cat.

    Comparing what I see here and my plans/part, I would say the basic hull structure is exactly alike-man deck down. Mast and yards and rigging exactly the same except for the fighting top on Wonder Dog. Also WD has the bodacious forward castle. HK has what I will call a basic quarterdeck with wings and associated bulwark extended to the second shroud so that it forms a U. WD does not have the wings and the bulwarks are extended with notches (there is a name for that, but it escapes me) for archers. WD also has red decorative stuff and a cool jalapeno eating direwolf on the sail.

    Clare, I need to find my camera before I start a build log. I will see if I can find it this weekend. I will refrain from using my cell phone--the iconic pictures of bigfoot are paragons of clarity compared to my cell phone pictures. If all else fails, I will compare notes. I may need advice on painting. While not intended, I think the painting of the unobserved hold area serves as a practice for the other areas. I started painting with old #3 and realized I would HAVE to water it down, or else you cannot se the lines thru the paint. I am stalled on the next step. Will that be a consistent color/wash or should there be streaks in it? There is apparently a third step as well...algae green. I am assuming you don't have to get the ratios exactly correct. If so, I am doomed.

    Sergio, Welcome! I would invite you to come to the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild meetings, but the Maritime Museum (where it is held) is closed for the duration of COVID and I suspect border crossings are clogged with reduced lanes. Stay tuned. Chuck

    Alas, no. As I said, there was only 2 mortars. One was to be mounted on Philly and one someplace else. Don't recall which gunboat. Looking at the Smithsonian plans and the Philly in the Smithsonian, you can see where sections were cut away for extra bracing and support...never used. One of the guns exploded when testing. Destroyed. IIRC they had problems with the other as well. Eventually decided to trash the whole idea and go mortarless. The mortar was obviously a counter-weight to the 12 pounder up front. In order to compensate, they put a butt-load of rocks under the aft platform.

    Bob. Thank you for your kind words. Based on your incredible iron work, that is high praise. Yeah, not sure about the mortar. It didn't work out too well the first time. Of the two planned for the fleet, one exploded during fitting out and testing. Don't recall if that was the one on Philly or another gunboat.

    Art, YES! You got the reference. Wally was in upper left corner, Charlie in lower left (if I recall). Wow, we've really gotten off topic, eh? Clare, Hull frame complete. The cardboard planks look robust enough to be workable. Pressing on.
