Sorry vossie, if I didn't have a whole ship load of rigging to do on my own model, I'd take you up on the offer. I do love soda and chips, though. I have a sister that lives on the other side of the Bay  that I could visit too. Maybe see the birthplace of my hero, Tom Brady while in your town. Humm, then there is always a side trip to Napa. Clos Pegase and St. Clement are two of my favorites. This could be fun...

California dreaming in the aftermath of a blizzard. I did have a snow day yesterday, so had some time to get the masts set. Here they are installed with the trestle trees glued on. I added the belaying pins to the mizzen pin rack, and the boarding pikes to the main and fore mast rakes. I made those from straight pins that I blackened after cutting off the heads.

This morning I glued the mast tops to the trestle and crosstrees. I put the topmast and caps in place temporarily when I installed the trestle trees, so I could get the topmasts straight to the lower masts by adjusting the position of the crosstrees.

Making the pendants and shrouds is next.

Chuck, I wrestled with which forum to post my log in for a day or so; but the way I see it is that the timbering minus the laser cut keel is just strips of wood than a couple of blocks for carving the decorations. That is no different than ordering milled strips from somewhere else in my opinion

Nicely done Bob, another fine model, and great detail work.
The last four full shot photo's look a tad out of focus to me, can you replace them so we may better enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Well, that's it. Granado is finished. I have made up and mounted the swivel guns and the anchors, completing the work.

The swivel guns were made up using the kit's brass barrels and PE mounts, as well as brass wire and small beads for the handles. They were painted black and installed with pins in holes previously drilled in the pedestals.

The anchors were all made using the kit castings, boxwood strip for the stocks, paper bands on the stocks and rings made from wire. Puddening was added to the rings by wrapping line around the wire. Cat blocks and falls and lashings were generally done as shown in AOTS.

Following photos of the final work are a few completion portraits of the model. I will be starting a log for Halifax in the next day or two.

Thanks so much Koen and the "likes".

Rich, I have been building for about 50 years. I have been retired for almost 20. Most of my recent builds have been in the 1 to 1 1/2 year category. My wife would agree that they have been multiplying like rabbits.

Rigging continues. I'm on my second set of shrouds because I didn't read the documentation carefully enough and learned the hard way that the deadeyes need to get spliced on before the ratlines or else you'll ruin the ratlines in trying.
I came to the realization over time, so it wasn't too rough of a lesson. I had finished one set and was about a quarter of the way through the second. So no more than about 200 tiny clove hitches.
It also gave me the excuse to redo the shrouds using nice Syren linen line instead of the polyester that came with the kit. Because I ran out of the polyester.
I'm much happier with this second set. Once the shrouds are done, I'll double-check the drawings to make sure I have as much done as possible before affixing the shrouds and mast. It seems every time I look, another small assembly jumps out at me that I wouldn't want to install once the mast is firmly in place.
But I feel like I'm getting closer to the point when I can start connecting all the rigging systems I've been building to the mast and boat.  At that point, progress will seem to go very quickly - for at least awhile.

Below: The 2nd try at ratlines - about 2/3 complete.
Below: This was the first attempt at shrouds and ratlines, since discarded. I'm more satisfied the 2nd time around.

    Closeups of the 2nd try:

Below: The served forestay, followed by the completed forestay with mouse - which I carved from a small dowel and painted black. I looked at various techniques to weave the mouse more authentically, but, well, no. Not this time around at 1:48 scale.

The mast rigging shot below is my first run-through, with old shrouds pre-ratlines/deadeyes. I've since removed the topmast, which is making the second attempt at the shrouds and other rigging much easier.

Below: Port-side shrouds, before jigging to tie on ratlines.

Absolutely fantastic.  Sorry if this was discussed before but I was wondering how you're eventually going to display this.  Also, I second Dirk's question.  What will be next?

Thank you so much for the comments and likes.

Christian, there are plans for a POB full build of the Triton; but that will be a while before I start it.  I currently have a piece of Castello Boxwood that is acclimating to the climate in Texas which I will mill down and use for the Triton full build.  I also need to find some Holly and order a Byrnes tables saw and thickness sander.  In the mean time I am going to put together the Model Shipways 18th Century Longboat kit.  It's still a toss up on whether to start the Model Shipways Confederacy kit or the Lumberyard's US Frigate Raleigh kit (Harold Hahn plans and milled lumber from the Lumberyard).  Decisions, decisions.......

Tony, it may seem like it was fast, but I started this build in 2014, then had to take a break to finish up school and for 3 surgeries for carpal and cupital tunnel.  Once I was able to start it back up (after earning my degree) I really wanted to get it finished.

Now to go finish the case and get the model ready to give to my Dad.

Tom, thanks I will continue to follow your build, it looks like you are ahead of me with the yards. I finished up the shroud lines and have mastered using my Sherline lathe setup for seizing lines. The real trick is speed being slow and slight tension on line being seized and feeding the thread at a slight angle towards the chuck end for the tight wrap.

I started adding the deadeyes to the shroud lines tying off at four locations on the back lash. I found with my line that using tweezers at about 1/8" above the final position and bending the line back and tying a loop off with thread then add the deadeye adjust to final location 1/8" and lash off that this would take up the stretch in the line when tying off to final location. I used a ruler to maintain alignment of the deadeyes which I found could easily be slightly adjusted using the stretch in the line. Once one side was complete I added the sheer pole to hold the deadeyes facing forward before I will add the ratlines. I hope this makes sense, but pictures may help as well.

Now back to adding sheer poles to the next two masts.

    Hey all,

Bulwark here from Oklahoma, watching the twisters go by and oblivious to them because my mind is on this hobby now.  I have had a great experience here so far. Lots of great encouragement and advice. This helps more than anything to make me want to build things. I've seen some amazing, and mind blowing work here. There is such talent gathered in this site. I am glad to be a part of it. My humble beginnings are in the gallery now and although it is some rough work, I am proud of it. I finished it, and I have two ships waiting to be build: the Bluenose II (AL) and the Red Dragon (AL). I know that I will get all the help I need to make these models come alive. I'm taking a particular interest in fabrication of small ship furniture, such as I saw done by Ms. Galad from Brazil who modded her Red Dragon to have a furnished cabin complete with LED whale oil lamp to illuminate the tiny room, and transparent windows to allow the viewer to see inside. That is the kind of modeler I aspire to be. But it is a long road to such a thing. I don't know if I can manage to get there, but the journey is thing. Couldn't ask for better fellow travelers.

The case is finished and carefully pulled over the model, sealing in the model for forever (I hope).  Now I just need to find the time to take it to my Dad who lives 3 hours away.  I'm sure he will love it (he has no clue that I am going to give it to him).  Anyways, here are the pics.....
