It has it's shortcomings, but I had to get a lot deeper into wood ship modeling before I was aware of that.
I came across it in the library before I built my first wood model, and I found the Vanguard on the cover to be mesmerizing.

It is the kind of book that can get young people hooked..   Just try getting them hooked with Steel as a first book..😁

I used the hatch coamings and gratings from the Syren. The laser cutting was
perfect and everything went together without issue!

Yep. And then some. Get a Byrnes saw, a Byrnes thickness sander, a bandsaw, and a perhaps a decent hand plane if you don't want to spring for a jointer. That will enable you to mill whatever you need from billets cut from many species of excellent modeling woods that can be had for nothing. Box, pear, and the other commercially sold species are great, but you have so much more to chose from once you become self-sufficient. Even some woods from old discarded furniture can be turned into fine modeling stock. The machines do cost money, but you get a good return on them if you ever sell them used and the savings over buying milled wood pays for them in short order. One of the biggest benefits is that you can always cut the sizes you want, rather than hunting for hard to find dimensions.

Thanks Matt.  I'm finding slowing down, taking my time measuring and writing it all down is keeping my enthusiasm up more than if I just kept moving.  A lot less time doing things 2 or 3 times.  Still making some mistakes and having to redo things, but much less than usual and it's not nearly as discouraging.

I pulled out the Proxxon and what a difference it made.  Probably reduced the time of cutting and sanding the lintels by a couple of hours.  Fairing everything up took a bit of time and I knocked 2 or.3 pieces loose on each side that had to be fixed, but better to fix a bad glue joint now than when planking.

Run looks nice from the stern.

    and from the bow.

One question I had is I started putting in the gunport uprights and realized those will require a fair bit of fairing to the bulkhead curve as well.  Any tips on fairing the uprights without messing up the sills?  I'm assuming fairly high grit and patience are in order.

I want to thank everyone who has expressed an interest in my build. We really have a great group that works hard to support each other. I wanted to post just a brief update. In the picture below you will see the results of the repair. And I am happy to report that Fairing is complete. All Laser char is gone. Tomorrow it is on to chapter 2.

Thanks Ben.  That company is about 20 min from my house and usually I can pick it up there but they said they need to ship due to the restrictions this time.

Thank you Chuck!  I hope you sell everyone of those.  I hope my own meager efforts convince anyone that they can do it and to just take the plunge and get one of these amazing kits

You have the same cases that I used then?

Look forward to see what you come up with next.

Looking like it is coming along nicely.  I also have a bad reaction to CA and have previously tried to avoid it like the plague.  Might have to invest in one of those respirators you talked about.

One more thing for the newer members I have said before.  This is a world wide forum with people of all skill levels.  We literally have some of the best modelers in the world post regularly here.  People who literally wrote the books on our subjects.  Sort of a basketball forum with Lebron posting daily or a swimming forum where Phelps is all over the place.  Sometimes this is pretty intimidating.  Us mere mortals must always remember everyone starts somewhere and we all want to improve.  Some of those "pros" are the nicest and most helpful people here.  The tone and encouragement from everyone here on the forum makes this the best place to be

    Hi

I am fairly new to the ship modelling hobby. I was "tricked" into this as my 6 year old son insisted we visited a hobby shop to buy a plastic viking ship. I am Danish after all. But I couldn't believe all the wonderful boxes of wood model ships on the shelves, and I was instantly transported back to my early teens, where my dad had a Wasa kit (incomplete) lying around which I fruitlessly started to build. All the daydreaming of a mighty warship just came back.

So I started with the beginners ship Polaris from Occre just to see if I could do it. And I was pretty satisfied and more importantly more hooked. It was actually doable.

I am now in the process of doing the Beagle from Occre, and I think it is going good. I have started a build log here:

Let see where this takes me.

My son asks me daily, when I am finished 🙂 and what ship I will build next. He also likes to sit with me while doing a little building, although he is a bit annoyed that there isn't many moving parts. Only the rudder moves a little.

    Regards,
    Lars

Welcome Phil.  Many of us bring stuff to work on when we travel or are away from home.  Starting a build log is a great way to show your work ask questions and all around participate in the community

Thank you Druxey.  Everyone step I am learning more and more.  Next up is still up in the air.  I really want to get away from traditional kits although will eventually be building the Pride of Baltimore II but not just yet.

The 2 choices are Cheerful and Echo cross section.  Each has some pretty big challenges for me.  Will be thinking about it a bit more while I clean up my workshop...

Thanks JD.  Cleaning the shop is a priority.  I have a fairly large office and as a consequence of so much room is I basically can dump stuff and not worry about it getting in the way.  End result I have boxes the movers put down 11 years ago I have never moved......  I would like to get some type of cabinets to organize some stuff.

We never had a lull after the first month or two.  We are pretty close to being overrun with every facility running at max capacity most of the time.  So far we are holding the line...
