bet you could design and build your own carving tools and come up with many original designs....but i guess it's amazing what one can do by adapting just a few basic.... oh.....unless i missed it....what do you use for the final finishing?

Hi Axel,
thanks for your interest im my Pamir model and for your kind words. As you have seen, my Pamir is representing the way she looked like when she went down in a hurricane near the Azores Islands in 1957. Due to some changes to the original ship, (as well as her sistership Passat way back in 1951/1952, the look differs a bit from the original build.
To get the (complete scratch built) model started, I used a birthplace Blohm and Voss Hamburg construction drawing, adopting bulkheads and shape of the hull. I also purchased a construction drawing of shipyard Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft in Kiel, resembling the changes in 1951/1952
There is a Revell plastic model of the Pamir (scale 1:250), of which I found a broken down torso for peanuts on Ebay. That plastic model is representing the Pamir of her look when she went down. This was a good aid for getting the contours, dimensions, and Deck arrangement right in scale. In my build log you will find, amoungst many other details, a scetch-overview of the deck housings vents, etc, with dimensions im (MM).
I wish you much fun and good success with your build
Best regards, Nils

just curious as to what lens(s) you use to take your superb shots.................you probably could have a whole thread describing your camera, lighting, and techniques.....sorry don't want to distract you....just a quicky and the fascinating thing is, while the whole world is falling apart around you, you and hubac sit and create these fantastic creations on almost a microscopic level, that maybe 1% of the population may find interesting....that sure is one definition of love.....- 208 replies

regarding the shine or flatness of the hull, i kinda imagine i'm a seagull back in time, flying near the ship and i try to imagine what it looked like from above, like someone looking at a model.....though i haven't checked photos of replicas of ancient ships to see how they looked....just an interesting perspective...........

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
