    J,

I believe Nils was referring to this picture showing the sweeps (oars) secured to the gallow bitts.

Richard, from the drawing it sticks out about 3/4" from the outside edge of the cap rail.  When I get home tonight from work I'll measure it and let you know what mine is.

Richard, I measured my cathead and it extends out 13/16" from the outside edge of the cap rail and the total length of the top is 1-3/16".

    Thanks Sal,
That is helpful.  I will give it a try.
I think I have to rebuild the cathead.  The top part appears to be too short. On the plans I measured from the inside of the cap rail to the outside of the cathead but it does not seem to be correct compared to yours and others.  Can you  tell me the length of the top part of your cathead?

    Richard,

I use a jeweler's saw to cut the tubing to the approximate size I need.  In a piece of scrap wood I drilled a small hole the same diameter as the tube, to a depth of the final sheave thickness.  Then I put the tube in the hole, which will hold it in place, and use a file to file the tube down to it's correct height and if I need to make it thinner I just keep filing the tube and the wood together.  Hope this makes sense, I included a picture that might help explain.

That and the computer to run it, then tooling.
We recently purchased a CNC router where I work and it has been a game changer for us, but at a cost. We are way beyond the initial cost of the machine with running power ( new panel since we were out of capacity), software, computer to run it and bits, etc. etc.
But, I can sit all day and watch it make aluminum chips and saw dust! Cool stuff. Thanks for posting Mark.

    Great bit of kit.
Now there's no need to 'build' your model you can machine it in one

Program the machine to do it in 3D

    or

Use the knives and do it by hand

    UPDATE..... Cannon issue.

A couple of days getting the four quarter deck cannons installed.  The scale issue was a bit of a shock.
Once again, the old plan sheets I am using show the same gun carriage rigged throughout all deck guns.  Obviously, the size of the larger rig seen here does not work for the limited space of the quarter deck.

A little research and online browsing, I ran across a Mantua plan sheet that clearly shows the use of much smaller demi-cannon used for the forecastle, quarter deck, and half deck.

So I removed the big guns from the quarter deck and replaced them with these demi-Culverin's

Note the difference in the shape of the carriages.

    Much better fit.... Issue solved!
The best news is, all these little demi-cannons have none of the block and tackle rigging!  I'll gladly take that with a big smile.

Except for the forward ports located by the forcastle bulkhead, the larger cannons work just fine for the much larger waist deck.

All of the really heavy "drakes" (42 pounders) were used on the lower deck.
Then there were about 44 smaller (18 pounder) drakes mounted on the middle deck and, I assume the main waist area of the upper deck.

The balance of the 90 guns, as launched in 1637, (quarter deck, half deck, forcastle deck, bow chasers and stern chasers) were made up of those much smaller demi-Culverins.  These were mostly 9 pounders.
Searching the term on the internet, illustrations portray most of these with larger spoke-wheels as seen on field artillery.
I'm not going there.  Do you blame me?

This will be about it until after the holidays folks.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hi everyone and best wishes for Christmas and New Year!!!

I've not been able to do much lately.  However last night, I managed to do a bit more work on the mock up of the superstructure.  This time, I used the actual shapes of the superstructure to get a better approximation of what she'll look like, as well as helping me to work things out better.

Still lots of fun, to go.

The photos below show a bit more of the beauty of the shape beginning to shine through.  Also, for those of you who are watch lovers, the watch is a Ball HydroCarbon DeepQuest; a professional divers watch made out of a solid block of Titanium and rated to a depth of 10 000 feet (3000 metres)!  Oh, by the way, for those in the US, 'Ball' is an American owned company, who build their watches in Switzerland.

    All the best!

    Patrick

Thank you for posting this Mark It is an incredible piece of kit, however the first thing that sprung to mind is what PriceMachine and design mentioned. The $4000 price tag is just a small chunk of what is required to get this machine up and running.
I am also very wary of the fact that the monies for orders placed are obviously being used to 'bankroll' the company to allow production.Spending that kind of cash,I would only feel secure purchasing a readily available machine from a well established company.

    Kind Regards

    Nigel

    Hi.
Now this is a Quality machine.
Father Christmas I want one please.....
first used a CNC machine when I was 23 and that was a monster that only had 3 axces and 1 huge cabinet with all the electronics in.

    Regards Antony.

I've seen this before, neat little 5 axis.......but...you would be shocked at the cost of a Cad/Cam program capable of programming 5 axis work, it will cost more than the machine for a good one.....and there is no realistic chance of hand coding a 5 axis machine.
You can certianly machine an engine block without all the wizardry of a 5, it just takes a little longer and does not look as cool doing it

Hmmm, we do mostly one offs, like Janos said.  Next life time........

Hey Mark, why not build a miniature Chevy flat head and install it into a Hacker craft model boat?  It would scare a lot of water fowl.                        Duff
