GLakie reacted to Chuck in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by rafine - FINISHED
That looks vvvery good. Yes it was inevitable. But as a scratch project what you have left to do is pretty straight forward. This is the fun part so enjoy it and move ahead.

GLakie reacted to rafine in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by rafine - FINISHED
I neither wanted, nor intended, to get ahead of Chuck on this build, but I'm afraid that it's happening. After finishing the outer hull detailing by doing the boom supports and adding the keel plates (there are still some eyebolts to be added during rigging), I moved on to the interior by doing the stern seats, which Chuck hasn't done yet.
The seats were made from boxwood sheet using card templates to make the parts. Some discards before they fit, but fairly straightforward work. The seats were painted red to match the inner planking.
I think that I will start making some gun carriages now, while waiting to see where Chuck goes next.

GLakie got a reaction from Canute in Storage of Saws
Always used CR-56 or WD-40 on all my blades, power and hand saws. It's light, and easier to wipe off when you need to use the saw.

GLakie reacted to Geoff Matson in Constitution by Geoff Matson - Model Shipways 2040 - 1/76 scale
Thanks George.
They work out great and make the rigging a whole lot easier. This way I can rig the masts while sitting in my chair instead of standing up and working over the model worrying about breaking something off. With the rigging there is a lot adjusting the lines to get them just right. If you look behind the masts you can see the other stands ready to go to work

I like the temporary mast stands and the protective "house" for the ship. Really good ideas!!

I finished all the foremast shrouds.
The shrouds are all I want to install on the foremast right now. I am figuring out the rest of the lines that will go on the Foremast and make them up ahead of time. That way when I begin installing the mast all the lines will be ready to go.
I will do the same for the Main mast and Mizzen mast.

GLakie reacted to xken in USS Constitution by xken - Model Shipways - Scale 1:76.8
Tom, thanks and here is the rest of the gun. I used the brass strip supplied with kit and stretched it to straighten. I cut a "V" notch in a piece of scrap wood and glued a 1/16" piece of rod in the notch about halfway down. I then formed the brass strip over the rod using the blades of a common screwdriver.
Cut the straps to match the forward edge of the carriage and matched the length on the other side.
Here they were very carefully glued in place with drop thickened CA so as not to glue the cannon trunnion so that it will be adjustable with the quoin in the gunport.
Next while waiting on the deck strips to come I decided to build up the quarter gallery areas. I really struggled with the window shapes, but first carved the bottom filler piece at the required angle and dimensions off the plans and glued it in place parallel to the base line. I then decided to build a removable shell that holds the window area and glued the back piece the height of the windows and parallel to the bottom filler. Then added the angled rear part the required height and then the top shape again based on the plans. This formed the shell. I assumed that the bottom of the windows were parallel to the baseline as well.
I then started adding each window and the filler blocks on each side and carved the top filler per the plans. In my mind the windows look odd angling down. It seems as though the window laser pattern was taken from a side view rather than a straight on view which accounts for the awkwardness in appearance. I almost decided to scrap the kit parts and scratch build them to look right but I could not find a clear image anywhere showing the inboard window detail.
Here is an "in progress" of the parts so far with some fussing and trim work needed. I have to say quite a bit of rework was needed to get to this point and try and make the windows look correct. I just wish I had a good reference image; most of what I find are side views or rear views not showing the inboard window.
Anyway I have made the section removable for either easier painting or replacing if I find better reference material.

Going to meet final solution for standing, I made some test - drawings
First, I found my old CS plans, and copied curvature from adequate ribs, draw something by them, scanned it, import on Adobe Ilustrator as background, and start drawing over them on new layer
Here is how far I got - just preliminary drawing
Red marks are for future screws, toward hull - screws for wood, down - I plan to take mechanical screws
Main idea is to fix standing in upper part to hull permanent, and to fix standing in lower part temporary for some massive panel board, thinking how to get it easy to replace that board with final board when Her Glass Cage will be done. Yes, invisible masked screw covered by veneer, with unscrew from down side.
I think it will be nice to put "Star of India" on outside panels of standing
Maybe there will be some additional carvings and relief around "Star". Maybe.
Maybe I`ll just paint standing black as hull, and add some "golden" ornaments, similar to ornaments on bow and stern
have to think about a while

A lot of the Egyptian cotton is single ply (i.e. made from long cotton fibers). You should avoid multi ply if possible. These are made of shorter fibers interweaved together and are more prone to stress stretch.

Hi Mark
I'm not having much luck searching for the "The Rope" website, but I did find a photo on Bob Riddoch's post (http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/1710-38th-the-rope-exhibition-tokyo-japan/) of the exhibition in 2013. Looks interesting.
Cheers

Sure, I can divulge... but not take pictures or "try it out". I was allowed to inspect the contents and then it has to be put away for the next 7 days and a wake-up. A new laser tube for the laser cutter. It will boost power from roughly 32W steady state to 45W steady state. I'm hoping to cut 3/16" boxwood in one pass at a good rate of speed with minimal V-ing of the kerf. If that works... I'll give 1/4" boxwood a shot. I felt (and so did some others) that I needed more power. Anyway, the extension for the cabinet is arriving tomorrow. Need to modify the case as the old tube is 850mm and the new tube 1000mm long.. and a bit bigger in diameter.
Hmmm....If I got a tube big enough, I wonder if I could build a Death Star?
Surrender? No.. attack in a different direction... err.. hmm.... Admiral... yep... surrender.

Hi Mark
You've got me intrigued now! Did you get to peek a look at your pressie? Can you divulge? On the other hand, being an ex-Marine, you wouldn't have peeked, would you?
Cheers
